Description
English: A cartoon for the cover of Puck, January 7, 1885. It shows a doctor and a sexton, happily greeting a striped candy cane, whose colored lines are marked with the names of dangerous additives that have been used to create the colors:

green (chrome green, chromium oxide, verdigris, copper acetate); white (chalk); red (red lead, lead oxide, vermillion, mercury sulfide); white (arsenic, arsenic trioxide, glucose, an adulterant for sugar); yellow (chrome yellow, lead chromate).

At the time, their use was unregulated.
