Summary

Description
English: Liesegang band experiment. Red material is gelatin with Mg sulfate (MgSO4) and a drop of red food coloring; clear material above it is concentrated ammonium hydroxide. Diffusion of NH4OH into the gelatin causes discontinuous precipitation of Mg hydroxide ( Mg(OH)2 ) - classic Liesegang band behavior. Frames were taken every 3 minutes, with 12 frames/sec. Around 20 sec into the video the upper, thick band of Mg hydroxide gravitationally collapses down onto the other bands. The camera battery ran out before a sixth band formed. Experiments supported in part by National Science Foundation grant EAR-1052813.
