Entitled "Science at a Colliery Disaster," the frontispiece plate depicts a scene from the Hamstead Colliery mining disaster of 1908, which occurred in Hamstead, England. The rescue party wear respirators while performing a search and rescue mission within the mine, which is filled with poisonous gases due to the fire. Twenty six men were killed in one day due to the mine fire.

The caption reads: "Science at a Colliery Disaster. The illustration shows the rescue party at the Hamstead Colliery disaster preparing to descend the shaft. Each member of the party is equipped with an artificial respirating apparatus, so that in effect he caries his own atmosphere with him and avoids breathing the poisonous gases in the pit."

This plate is found within The Romance of Modern Chemistry, which is a layman's introduction to topics in chemistry. Includes a history of chemistry along with alchemy and the philosopher's stone; elements including organic, invisible, metals, acids, alkalies, and water; chemical changes such as fire, freezing and explosions; chemistry of the stars; food; electricity; solutions and crystals; as well as discoveries in chemistry.
