Notes
  • Structure has been referred to stylistically as "Ship Design."
  • Significance: This is one of America's most complete adaptation of the imagery of the transportation machine to an architectural problem. This building represents a case-study of the transformation of an image and its connotations. First, there is aeronautical streamlining with its message of speed, power, and the triumph of technology; second, the application of that image, with all its initial implications, to the design of the luxury oceanliner (a form which in itself possesses overtones of wealth, elegance and high-fashion); and last, the utilization of the aeronautically-streamlined-oceanliner image for a soft drink bottling plant with the accumulation of meanings from each level of changeover. The image also provides, almost gratuitously, the assurance of the hygenic purity of technology, an important consideration in an installation devoted to the preparation of food or drink. The clients, two brothers who owned the bottling franchise, were ardent yachtsmen, and were instrumental in the choice of the nautical image.
