Summary

Description
English: Madhava temple, also called Ranga temple, is a temple dedicated to Vishnu and Lakshmi. Outside the main shrine door, a giant Hanuman statue shows him with right hand raised, left fist (damaged) on his thigh and his arched tail above him. Around his waist is a belt with a dagger - also one of the Vijayanagara official emblems. Below Hanuman is a crawling demon killed by Hanuman. The scale emphasizes insignificance of the demonic evil and significance of the good that Hanuman symbolizes, a representation found in many historic Indian arts.

Near the shrine is an inscription suggesting that the temple had a large performance arts hall in front, but now there are only ruins. Next to the main shrine are the ruins of a shrine for Krishna with Bhagavata Purana legends carved onto them.

Hampi ruins and monuments date to pre-17th century period of South Indian history, particularly those related to the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire era (14th-16th centuries). The site consists of numerous ruins and temples over a large area, the most visited and studied are those located near the Tungabhadra river.

The town derives its name from the Pampa Devi Hindu mythology in Sanskrit, with Pampa morphing into Hampa in Kannada, then Hampi. The city served as capital of the Vijayanagara rulers, was pillaged, ruined and abandoned after Muslim armies of a Sultanate coalition attacked and defeated it. In the modern era, it serves as an archaeological site and is a UNESCO world heritage site.
