Sea of thieves was released on March 20th, 2018 by Rare Entertainment, the game started development in 2013 and was inaccessible to players until 2018 when the game dropped to the marketplace. When the game was released it was just called “Sea Of Thieves” from 2018 to 2021 when Rare added a season system to the game. The game was now in season 1 and along with that came the plunder pass and the release of Twitch Drops where players can watch Sea of Thieves content creators on twitch for amounts of time and earn rewards such as player or ship cosmetics. In season 6 Rare released a new feature which was called the hourglass of fate, but most players just call it “HG.” If the majority of the crew votes for the hourglass of fate the ship will dive under the water and stay there until the game finds an opponent for the players. When the ship rises back above the water there will be an opponent ship to the front/bow of the ship. Both ships will then undertake a battle until one sinks the other. The ship that stayed afloat will then gain more reputation with their specific faction then the ship that sank. The game has 2 hourglass factions, The guardians of fortune who represent the Pirate Lord and the Servants of the flame who represent the reaper. Both factions have 2 curses that can be unlocked as a cosmetic for your pirate when you reach a certain level. By reaching level 100 on the guardians of fortune the player will be able to purchase the “Ghost Curse” which is a curse that can turn the player's character into a green phantom. Similarly, when the player reaches level 100 for the servants of the flame they will get the chance to undertake a ritual to unlock the “Skeleton Curse” which can turn the player's character into a skeleton. Similarly when the player reaches level 1000 for the guardians of fortune they will get the chance to unlock the “Golden Blessing Of Athena” which is a curse that can turn the player's character into a golden version of the “Ghost Curse.” Similarly to this, when the player reaches level 1000 for the servants of the flame they will be given the chance to unlock the “Golden Skeleton Curse” which has the power to turn the player's character into a golden skeleton. It is important to note that sea of thieves is an entirely cosmetic game. All of the gold, doubloons, and ancient coins earned are used to purchase cosmetic items which can either be weapons, cosmetics for the character, and cosmetics for the player's ships. Sea of Thieves has 3 ship types, the sloop is the smallest ship in the game. It has 3 small decks and one mast. The galleon is the largest ship in the game, it has 3 larger decks and 3 masts. The Brigantine or “Brig” for short is the medium sized ship. It consists of 2 large floors and 2 masts. When a player reaches level 50 in 3 trading companies which can either be, The merchant alliance, the gold hoarders, the order of souls, the reapers bones, or the hunters call, They get the choice to become a “Pirate Legend Being a pirate legend allows you to play a special song which can open a secret stairway in the floor of any outpost and lead you down to a place called the Tavern Of Legends. In the Tavern of legends the player can buy new ship cosmetics and speak to the pirate lord who represents the last trading company, “The Athenas Fortune.” The Athenas fortune works the same way as all the other trading companies, the only difference being that it is led by the pirate lord who was the first person to find the sea of thieves. The sea of thieves is surrounded by an invisible barrier called the Devil's Shroud. When a player gets too close to exiting the sea of thieves they reach a point where the sea turns red and the player's boat begins to take damage. There are only 2 things in the game who can part the devils shroud. The Pirate Lord and the Shroud breaker. The shroud breaker can be acquired by doing a series of tall tale stories where the player will have to find many glowing stones and place them all in the shroud breaker for it to gain its magic, the player then sails into the red sea to an island found outside of the red sea called the Shores of gold where they then have to solve puzzles to unlock vaults which bring them closer and closer to the Gold Hoarder. Once the player reaches the center of the rock the gold hoarder will appear in which a long battle will take place before finally the player has completed all of the tall tales. When a player does the tutorial the Pirate Lord uses his skeleton head staff to part the red sea and clears a path so the player can start their new pirate life in an infinite life across the sea of thieves. The other tall tales in the game include 2 tall tales about fire and 5 tall tales about the popular movie series, “Pirates of the Caribbean” in which the player will complete all tall tales with each commendation and unlock a new shanty called the “Pirates life for me” which is a popular song all 5 of the pirates of the Caribbean movies.
