Conception[edit]

On 17 November 2022, after the success of Neighbours: The Finale, Amazon Freevee picked up the serial and it recommenced on 18 September 2023 with episode 8904. During this episode, fans were left on the cliffhanger that Toadie Rebecchi (Ryan Moloney) was marrying Terese Willis (Rebekah Elmaloglou), two characters who would not normally interact with each other. Their wedding undid the events of the finale, where Toadie married Melanie Pearson (Jacinta Stapleton) and Terese reconciled with her husband, Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis). Of the twist, Moloney said to Digital Spy, "Paul screwed Terese over and she was really, really hurt. Melanie screwed Toadie over and he was really, really hurt too! They became really great friends throughout that, supporting each other. Then they just started to fall for each other, throughout those moments of support and love."[1] Of being told the storyline, Rebekah explained, "Jason Herbison said that he flew me down because he wanted to see my face. They basically wanted to tell me in person – and he got exactly the reaction he was hoping for! It really got me. I was just like: 'Whaaaaat?'... It wasn't until we started working together and realised that, actually, this is quite good and working quite well. It seems okay!"[2]

From the events of the finale to episode 8904, production had decided to add a two-year-long time jump. In episode 8904, Melanie did not feature, except for during a small flashback scene, however Cowden remained uncredited for this scene and did not appear again until a day before flashback week.[3] The executive producer of Neighbours, Jason Herbison, revealed that the time jump had been "was decided very early on, when we were having talks with Amazon. We knew there was going to be a transmission gap, so life for the audience would have gone on and time would have passed for them too. It just felt like a one-off opportunity."[4] Jackie Woodburne (who plays Susan Kennedy) teased of the then-upcoming flashback week, "There's a two-year time jump – and you might find out what happened during that time further on down the line. The stories are just phenomenal. It's fantastic."[4] On 23 October 2023, it was announced that from 13 November to 16 November 2023, Neighbours would be airing a flashback week, in which scenes of the events that occurred during the two-year time jump would be aired to "finally solve some of the mysteries that have kept fans guessing".[5]

Development[edit]

Herbison told Digital Spy that the ultimate goal of the flashback week would be to "all lead to a big event, that we will then unpack in greater detail". He explained that the week would finally address Melanie's disappearance, with him teasing that it would "answer the mystery of: 'What became of Melanie, why did she leave? Why have a few other people left town?'". He explained that flashback week would comprise of real-time scenes and flashback scenes of events during the time jump and during the events of the finale, which viewers "didn't really see at the time". Kate Kendall, who played Lauren Turner in Neighbours and directed the flashback episodes, said of the writing of the episodes, "It's this extraordinary thing which has been crafted so beautifully. We are piecing together DNA that we haven't lived through, that you haven't lived through." She elaborated that during the making of the week, production had to consider what was realistic and what events were actually possible to have happened.[6]

It was later revealed that a scene of Paul dumping Terese at their vowel renewal would be shown during the flashback week. Dennis had previously teased, "The one thing that we can tell you is that even though it looks like Paul was being his typical ruthless self, and a selfish person by shunning Terese at the altar, he actually did it for Terese and she doesn't know that. She doesn't realise that Paul, in his own way, he was protecting her. That was why he jilted her at the altar."[7]

Cast[edit]

Upon the Neighbours reboot in episode 8904, appearances were made by regular cast members Lucinda Armstrong Hall, Emerald Chan, Stefan Dennis, Rebekah Elmaloglou, Alan Fletcher, Annie Jones, Tim Kano, Candice Leask, Ryan Moloney, Xavier Molyneux, Shiv Palekar, Noami Rukavina, Georgie Stone, Sara West, Lloyd Will, Jackie Woodburne, Riley Bryant, Tanner Ellis-Anderson, Henrietta Graham, Nikita Kato, Ayisha Salem-Towner and Marley Williams. Eleven regular characters who were previously featuring in the serial prior to its cancellation did not return. Additionally, Lucinda Cowden made a cameo appearance as Melanie during episode 8904, but remained uncredited. The following episode revealed that this scene was a flashback to the day of Terese and Paul's vowel renewal. In response, Cowden teased online, "It takes a while but she will return".[3] It was later announced that Cowden's reprisal would occur prior to and during flashback week.[8] Melanie returns on the episode prior to the beginning of flashback week.[9]

Among the cast members who did not return in episode 8904 were Matt Wilson and Takaya Honda, who played Aaron Brennan and David Tanaka respectively. Prior to the Neighbours reboot, 10 News First aired a special behind-the-scenes segment at the Nunawading Studios. The segment contained footage of cast members filming inside the set of The Waterhole and viewers spotted Wilson talking with other cast members, however Honda was not present.[10] When episode spoilers for the month of November were released, Honda's character David was referenced, confirming the actor's return before Wilson's.[11] However, on 6 November 2023, it was officially announced that Wilson would return as Aaron, alongside the character of Nicolette Stone, the mother of Aaron and David's daughter. The role of Nicolette was recast from Charlotte Chimes to Hannah Monson due to Chimes' decision to not return, as revealed on social media.[12][11]

April Rose Pengilly (left) and Jodi Gordon (right) returned as Chloe Brennan and Elly Conway respectively.

Daniel Kilkelly of Digital Spy announced on 30 October 2023 that Morgan Baker would also be reprising his role as Callum Rebecchi. Baker guest starred in episode 8904 as Callum watches his father, Toadie, marry Terese, however the actor failed to make any more appearances.[13] On the same day it was announced that Aaron and Nicolette would return, Neighbours revealed on social media that another nine actors would be returning for flashback week. They included April Rose Pengilly as Chloe Brennan, Jodi Gordon as Elly Conway, Bonnie Anderson as Bea Nilsson, Jacinta Stapleton as Amy Greenwood, Olivia Junkeer as Yashvi Rebecchi, Benjamin McNair as Malcolm Kennedy, Ian Rawlings as Phil Martin, and Ariel Kaplan as Imogen Willis.[14] Pengilly and Gordon's return had previously been disclosed during an interview between Gordon and The Herald Sun in May 2023, where Gordon said, "We are excited to announce that Chelly are back! We will both be appearing in the new Neighbours, and will be back on set very soon." She also told fans that her and Pengilly couldn't "wait to share Chloe and Elly's next chapter with you!"[15]

Kaplan had appeared in episode 8904 as Imogen, Terese's daughter. She appeared in another two episodes.[16] On Instagram, Junkeer explained that she thought of her return as a way "to fill in the gaps". She told social media that Yashvi would only appear in flashbacks, but hinted that Yashvi would "come and go".[17] On 3 October 2023, it was announced that Jessica Muschamp would be returning in a stint as Sharon Davies.[18] In a video posted to the show's social media accounts, Muschamp stated, "Shaz is back, at least for a little while. It's going to be so fun and I cannot wait for you to see it... We'll see you soon."[19] The character returned on 3 November as part of Nell's search for Melanie.[20]
