At January 21, 2024, An Iranian army recruit who has not been identified, entered the barracks of a Kerman Army base before opening fire on his fellow soldiers, most of which were resting at the time. 5 soldiers were killed, and the Suspect was later detained by the police after a pursuit in which, he allegedly hijacked 2 different vehicles and fled on foot. Before hijacking the first vehicle, he blended in with other soldiers and ran to the outside of the base. The victims had not been identified publicly. The motive for this attack is unkown, but it is believed that the attack was in protest of the Iranian Mandatory military service law, which requires all 18 year old individuals to serve 2 years in the Iranian Army. This is one of the first Mass shootings in Iran that was not an act of Islamic extremism.
