Jennie Higgins is a traditional folk singer and historian known for her a cappella traditional arrangements of folk songs that tell women’s stories. She has released her debut album Where Are All The Women? (February 2023) which explores the plethora of womanhood presented in traditional folk song.
Early Life[edit]
Higgins was brought up in Blagdon, North Somerset. She was educated at Blagdon Primary and Churchill Academy and Sixth Form, during this time she sang with various choral groups including Lyrica, Trinity Singers and Bristol Cathedral and Wells Cathedral Choir schools. She attended St Mary's University, Twickenham where she used her contemporary history degree to study folk traditions, cultures and musicology, here she gained a BA First Class Hons in History.
Career[edit]
Her passions for both the folk genre and feminism have came together through her work with The Folky Union of Women and Thank Folk For Feminism Podcast (2020-2022). Here she specialises in safeguarding young musicians for a more inclusive and sustainable folk scene, whilst championing women’s folk history.
