Hasami Group (stylized as HASAMI group) is a Japanese experimental music group created in 2006[1] and led by multi-instrumentalist Aoki Ryuichiro (Japanese: 青木龍一郎, Ryuichiro Aoki). Hasami group are known for their eccentric approach to producing music and media, with lyrics and visuals often having nostalgic themes of high-school angst and Japanese culture as it was from the end of the Showa era to the middle and ending of the Heisei era. Hasami group has produced over 20 LPs and EPs since 2008. Their music covers a wide array of genres with a lo-fi element often present, including hardcore-punk, hip-hop, spoken word, and Shoegaze.

History[edit]

Hasami group was founded in 2006 When Ryuichiro was a middle school student.[2]

By 2008 Hasami Group begun releasing music, hosted on their fc2 account. The first eight albums were either unavailable or absent from the internet and physical releases until in 2022, when Hasami Group's bandcamp page released them for streaming.

In 2010 Ryuichiro completed high school and upon moving to Tokyo for university the band fractured and Ryuichiro later found himself the sole regularly-participating member.[3]

In March of 2011 the Fukushima nuclear accident interrupted work on the 11th record, influencing Ryuichiro's lyrical topics.

In 2013, the only known live performance happened in Tokyo, where the toilet water was sampled by band members to decide whether the water was alkaline or acidic. The concert was deemed an overall success by Ryuichro, [1] with the audience and fans praising the unique nature of the concert, while also noting the somewhat low quality of the performance.

From 2013 to 2017, Hasami Group gained notoriety among western audiences with their youtube upload of the song "summer", gaining over 100,000 views as of 2024. [2]

Hasami Group remains active, with bursts of activity that can be observed via the group's bandcamp, youtube, and Ryuichio's twitter account. Activity on Nico Nico Douga and tumblr has ceased.

Musical style and media[edit]

Hasami Group is known for their early work having a more energetic punk rock and outsider artist feeling, while later albums after 2010 when Ryuichiro graduated high school feature more piano ballads and melancholy tones to the music production. Hasami group is perhaps best known outside Japanese waters for their music videos that incorporate stock footage and bubble-era anime from japan.
