The FC Schüttorf 09 is a sports club based in Schüttorf, Grafschaft Bentheim, Lower Saxony, Germany. The club offers eleven different sports, with particular success in football, handball, and volleyball. The first men's football team played in the Landesliga Weser-Ems from 2013 to 2015 and from 2018 onwards, the first men's handball team competes in the Landesliga Weser-Ems, and the first men's volleyball team competes in the 2nd Bundesliga North.

FC Schüttorf 09 currently has around 3,000 members, making it the second-largest sports club in the Grafschaft Bentheim region. In 2008, 203 athletes achieved the Sportabzeichen, a German sports badge. The first Schüttorf OLB City Run, organized by the club, took place in 2009 and attracted around 800 participants.

FC Schüttorf 09 offers a wide range of sports and activities, including badminton, archery, boules, football, handball, karate, swimming, table tennis, volleyball, gymnastics, water polo, as well as various fitness, health, and rehabilitation courses. With 43 teams, the handball department is the largest within the club, second only to the football department.

History[edit]

The football department of FC Schüttorf 09 has a long-standing tradition within the club and can look back on a century-long history. Since the 1960s, Schüttorf has been playing in the Bezirksliga West. In the late 1990s, they were promoted to the Oberliga Niedersachsen/Bremen and won the Lower Saxony Cup in 2001, which qualified them to participate in the DFB-Pokal. However, they were eliminated in the first round by SSV Reutlingen 05 with a score of 1–4.

In 2014 and 2015, a tax evasion trial took place at the Bielefeld District Court. The trial was initiated based on findings by the Bielefeld Special Prosecutor's Office for Economic Crime, which revealed that between 2003 and 2008, salary payments at FC Schüttorf 09 and SV Wilhelmshaven, both sponsored by the Sprehe Group, were processed through a subsidiary of the Sprehe Group and not recorded as salaries but as operating expenses. According to the indictment, a tax loss of 1.8 million euros occurred. The court proceedings were terminated with a payment of a fine of 2.7 million euros by Albert and Paul Sprehe.[1]

The FC Schüttorf 09 plays its home matches at the Sportpark Holmers Kamp, which has a capacity of 5,000 spectators. The stadium is located in Schüttorf and provides a pleasant atmosphere for football matches.

Current Team and League[edit]

As of the 2022/23 season, FC Schüttorf 09 competes in the Landesliga Weser-Ems, which is the sixth tier of the German football league system. The team finished in the 6th position in the previous season.

Rivalries[edit]

FC Schüttorf 09 has local rivalries with other clubs in the region, including SV Bad Bentheim and SV Sparta Werlte. Matches between these teams often attract a large number of spectators and create an intense atmosphere.

Handball[edit]

The handball department of FC Schüttorf 09 is one of the most successful within the club. The first men's team competes in the Landesliga Weser-Ems. Over the years, the team has achieved several promotions and established itself as a competitive force in the region.

Volleyball[edit]

The volleyball department of FC Schüttorf 09 also enjoys success. The first men's team competes in the 2nd Bundesliga North, which is the second-highest level of volleyball in Germany. The team has a dedicated fan base and regularly attracts spectators to their matches.
