During a Monday Night Football broadcast of the a football game between the Buffalo Bills & the Cincinnati Bengals, Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest while tackling Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins, causing him to fall on the field. Hamlin would stand up, adjust his helmet, and then collapse on the field. Bills & Bengals sideline workers would run to Hamlin and would give him CPR and try to revive Hamlin.

Aftermath[edit]

The aftermath of the accident had some positive impact to the NFL world.

The night after this happened, a media designer had made jerseys with the number 3, and the words "PRAY FOR DAMAR" on the picture for every NFL team, which social media users would make their profile pictures. While in the hospital, he was able to write as his only communication at the time. He would write to the doctors “Did we win?” “Yes, Damar, you won,” one of his doctors told him. “You’ve won the game of life.”

On January 7th, 2023, the Jacksonville Jaguars were facing the Tennessee Titans in a Saturday Night match. During this, the Jaguars trailed by 3 with around 2 minutes left, and both teams were fighting for a playoff spot, with Jacksonville sitting at 8-8 and Tennessee 7-9. During a 3rd & 6, safety Rayshawn Jenkins had sacked quarterback Joshua Dobbs and forced a fumble which was recovered by Jaguars linebacker Josh Allen for a touchdown. This moment was shared everywhere on sports news with multiple people on social media saying it was amazing how the week went. The game's famous call is by Joe Buck, when he says: "Dobbs is hit from behind, but the ball's out? They're calling this a fumble at the moment, and the return by Allen, FOR THE TOUCHDOWN!"

On January 8th, 2023, The 8-8 New England Patriots visited the 12-3 Buffalo Bills in a Week 18 matchup. This game was played a week after Damar Hamlin collapsed, which had been known everywhere in Buffalo. On the first play of the game, returner Nyheim Hines returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, which led CBS commentator Jim Nantz to state: "This is storybook! An opening kickoff return, for Damar Hamlin!" Later in the game, Hines returned another kickoff for a touchdown, which also received attention from the entire sports world. Nantz would also say "OH MY GOODNESS! CAN HE DO IT TWICE? Is this for real!"


On January 10th, 2023, EA Sports would remove the CPR celebration from the video game Madden NFL 23, due to this event.

In the AFC Divisional round, the 14-3 Bengals defeated the 13-3 Bills by a score of 27-10, which ended the season for the Bills.
