"Cheerleader" is a song by American musician Porter Robinson. It was released on March 20, 2024, through Mom + Pop, as the lead single from his third studio album, Smile! :D. It was accompanied by a music video.

Composition and reception[edit]

"Cheerleader" is Porter Robinson's first solo release in two years. It was one of the first songs Robinson wrote for his new "incoming era".[1] On writing the song, he said in a press release[2] that he wanted to create something "that people could love with zero context – just instantaneous, universal, explosive connection".[3][4][5]

The song features Robinson's own vocals, which Robin Murray of Clash described as "scintillating".[1] The lyrics depict the convoluted relationship between musicians and their fans: "She's got hearts in her eyes / Saying, 'Boy, you better watch the time / Cause if you're not mine I'd rather see you burned alive".[6] In the bridge, Robinson sings: "Somehow, I don't even know what she does now / But do I wish her the best or do I actually miss her? / She had hearts in her eyes, she was rootin' for me all the time / Her love, the type that makes you dedicate your life / Oh, my cheerleader / Thought she needed me, but I need her."[2] On the lyrics, EDM.com writer Jason Heffler said: "Its lyrics, an anguished confessional of unrequited devotion, pierce like cherry blossom thorns to mirror the fragility we all feel as a relationship's expiration date nears. Robinson delivers them with [a] tortured ache ... mourning affection's insatiable voids through harmonies drenched in longing."[7]

Gillian Telling of People wrote that the song is "more of a pop anthem with emo undertones", contrasting with Robinson's previous works; Telling said Robinson was "reinventing his sound".[8] Similarly, Cleber Facchi of Música Instantânea said the song shows Robinson having a "completely distinct approach" when compared to his previous releases, with an emo sound.[9] Jason Lipshutz of Billboard described it as "a synth-pop shot of adrenaline, with buzzing melodies and instrumental pile-ups that will leave you dizzy (and applauding Robinson for creating the complete opposite of background noise)."[10] EDM.com writer Jason Heffler described it as an "anime-inspired dance track" that "shimmers like a Tokyo cityscape, fusing bubbly hyperpop and indietronica to deliver an incandescent earworm that earns its place among his best."[7]

Robin Murray of Clash said the song "is a fresh start, with Porter wiping the slate clean ... the single was built from the ground up, aiming to tap into something explosive. As a result, it rips out of the speakers".[1] Liberty Dunworth of NME called it "explosive" and said that, with the track, Robinson "wipes the slate clean and launches into a new era – building up to an explosive, high-energy chorus".[6]

Heffler said the song has "a fizzy synthpunk beat".[7]

Music video[edit]

'Cheerleader' was released on March 20, 2024 with a music video directed by Hugh Mulhern and creative-directed by Bradley & Pablo.[8][1]

The video "sees Robinson become enmeshed in a virtual reality".[6]
