Avery Greatorex (born 26 February 2004) is a British student and activist for the transgender community.

Avery is a psychology student at the University of Central Lancashire and campaigns alongside the University of Central Lancashire Students' Union as their Transgender Students' Representative.[1]. Within her role at the Students' Union, she campaigns to improve the lives of transgender students on campus, this is done through campaigns with the union.

Campaigns[edit]

Preferred Name Policy[edit]

In 2023, Avery began a campaign with the University of Central Lancashire Students' Union to normalise the use of preferred names on campus for transgender students[2][3]. This campaign aims to create a preferred name policy at the university with a student's preferred name being used on class lists, e-mails and ID cards.

On 16 November 2023 this campaign was voted upon by the University of Central Lancashire Students' Council and passed with 14 votes for, 1 vote against and 5 abstentions. This means that the University of Central Lancashire Students' Union is committed to working towards a policy until 16 November 2026[4].

Ban Conversion Therapy[edit]

In 2023, Avery also began a campaign with the University of Central Lancashire Students' Union and other Students' Union across England to ban conversion therapy in the United Kingdom[5]. The goal of this campaign is to work with Students' Unions across England and the National Union of Students to work towards a conversion therapy ban in the United Kingdom.

In Autumn 2023, the University of Warwick Students' Union voted on a motion in favour of a trans-inclusive ban on conversion therapy citing Avery's campaign within the motion[6].

On 16 November 2023, this campaign was voted upon by the University of Central Lancashire Students' Council and passed with 16 votes for, 0 votes against and 4 abstentions. This means that the University of Central Lancashire Students' Union is committed to working towards a conversion therapy ban until 16 November 2026[7].

This campaign is expected to be proposed by the University of Central Lancashire Students' Union as a motion for National Union of Students' Conference in April 2024.

University Society Involvement[edit]

UCLan Trans* Society[edit]

Avery is the current chair of the Trans* Society at the University of Central Lancashire Students' Union, hosting events for students who identify under the transgender umbrella[8].

UCLan Labour Society[edit]

Avery is the current chair of the UCLan Labour Society at the University of Central Lancashire Students' Union, a society affiliated with Labour Students which hosts events alongside local labour groups including Preston and Blackburn[9].

Following controversy surrounding supposed "transphobic remarks" and "nazi revisionism" from Labour MP Rosie Duffield and Labour whip Tonia Antoniazzi, the UCLan Labour Society issued a statement on 10 January 2024 alongside 35 other student labour clubs condemning the inaction from the Labour National Executive Committee[10]

Awards[edit]

National Student Pride - Changemaker of the Year (Nominee)[edit]

On 16 January 2024, Avery revealed on her X (formerly Twitter) that she was nominated for Changemaker of the Year for her conversion therapy campaign for the National Student Pride Awards. Within the same post it was also found that the University of Central Lancashire was nominated for SU Campaign of the Year.
