Andrej Kral (* february 27 1969 in Bratislava, Slovakia)[1][2] is a german-slovak neuroscientist. He is an elected member of the German National Academy of Science and of the international Collegium Oto-Rhino-Laryngologicum Amicitiae Sacrum.

Life[edit]

Kral studied general medicine (1987–1993), obtained his MD in 1993 and PhD in 1998, both from the Comenius University in Bratislava.[1] 2002 he became appointed associate professor of physiology at the Goethe‐University Frankfurt.[1] From 2002 to 2004 he has served as associate professor at the Medical Faculty of the Goethe‐Universität Frankfurt,[1] from 2004 to 2009 Professor of Neurophysiology at the University of Hamburg.[2] From 2013 till 2014 he was visiting professor of physiology at the University Western Ontario, Kanada,[1] and since 2004 he has been Adjunct Professor of Neuroscience of the University of Texas, Dallas, USA. Since 2009 he has been appointed Chaired Professor of Auditory Neurophysiology of the Medizinischen Hochschule Hannover as well as head of the Joint Institute of AudioNeuroTechnology (VIANNA) of the Hannover Medical School. Since 2018 he has been appointed Professor of Systems Neuroscience of the Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.

Andrej Kral works in the field of auditory neuroscience and neuroprothetics with the focus on cochlear implants, in the field of neuronal plasticity and single sided deafness. Pediatric development and critical periods are further topics of his research.[3]

Together with Stephen G. Lomber he received 2024 the Pioneer Award in Basic Science [4] of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology for his work on neuroplasticity in deafness and its therapy with cochlear implants.
