The Aït Merghad (in tamazight ⴰⵢⵜ ⵎⵔⵖⴰⴷ pronunciation) occupy a large part of the central and eastern High Atlas.[citation needed] It’s a branch of the Amazigh tribal confederation of Aït Atta

The Aït Merghad are known in Morocco for having been the last to have continued the fighting against the French and for being the most loyal tribe to the Amazigh cultures.[1]. Formerly part of the Aït Atta confederation, in 1645 due to a conflict the Aït Merghad left but in the 19th century the tribe decided to return to the confederation.
