Looks good. :) Thanks for the tweak! -Silence 15:43, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Independent projects[edit]

So I'm not what the intention was on adding the stuff about independent projects, but the impression I got from it was not what this category is meant for. This category is strictly for pages related to one specific wikiproject, Wikipedia:WikiProject Musicians. I think what you may have been thinking of was something more along the lines of Category:Musician WikiProjects, but please don't make this category something it's not, and that's definitely not what it is. Incorrect, that is what this category is. cf. Category:WikiProject Novels (not "Novel WikiProjects", Category:WikiProject Philosophy (not "Philosophy WikiProjects"), Category:WikiProject Food and drink (not "Food and drink WikiProjects"), Category:WikiProject Politics (not "Political WikiProjects"), Category:WikiProject Religion (not "Religion WikiProjects") Category:WikiProject Law (not "Law WikiProjects"), and dozens and dozens of identically-named projects. The real problem here is that, according to Wikipedia:WikiProject Musicians' mission statement, that project does not use the definition of musician which Wikipedia's article does: it is using it to refer to individual performing artists only, not to musicians in general (i.e. composers, bands, ensembles, instrumentalists, etc.), hence it doesn't apply to any other WikiProject that currently exists. However, if anyone ever creates, for example, a "WikiProject Michael Jackson", it would indisputably belong here. The purpose of the category system is to help readers find the project they're looking for in an orderly and efficient manner, not to play territorial games; categorization is a matter of practicality and utility, not "which project is the best?!?" silliness. -Silence 17:26, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Please read the project page again. In terms of the project, "Musicians" does NOT apply only to individuals. It's mentioned in the very first sentence of the page. As far as this category goes, I'm not concerned about "what project is best", I'm concerned that this category has previously existed for a purpose that is not what is now being enforced for it, and that doesn't help anybody find anything. If a precedent exists for like-named categories, then I believe the appropriate action would be to request a category rename for this category in it's original purpose (for pages related to WikiProject Musicians), so that the current name can then be used as you're describing without causing conflicts or confusion. Sorry, I'm confused about which definition of Musician you're suggesting is correct. For individuals only, or for all the other you mentioned above. The project is meant for all of those things, not just individuals, though that was the original purpose and certain parts of the project page may mistakingly still refer to this. The decision has come about after a fair amount of discussion on the project's main talk page, because no one seemed to understand what Musical Artist meant, and no one had a better suggestion.
