Renaming[edit]

I'd suggest renaming this category to either "Romanian émigrés" or "Romanian expatriates", because of the negative connotations of the word "defector". These people were not betraying their homeland, but trying to free themselves of a political regime. Daniel Mahu 10:06, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose we could rename it, but it'll have to reflect the same "tight" meaning in order to be useful: as you may see, there already was an "expatriates" cat (your mention made me remember to include this one there, so thanks), and "émigré" is even vaguer in meaning (one meaning has it that all expatriates are émigrés, another fails to make a distinction between fleeing Communist Romania and disagreeing with the politics of Romania at all times - making Emil Bodnăraş and Ana Pauker émigrés as well). If we can come up with a better equivalent of "defector", I'm all for renaming. Dahn 16:07, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This may seem silly, but I'm not quite sure what I was thinking about when I said that "defector" has negative connotations... I must have confused it with another word like "deserter". Looking it up again in a dictionary, it seems to be well chosen, so.. I'm sorry. — Daniel Mahu · talk · 23:12, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Whether I too was wrong or not, I actually agreed with you that it has negative connotations on some level (that is why I was wondering if we should prioritize specific term over potential negative meaning). Dahn 23:20, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps then an introductory text on the category page to clarify what it is about? I'm not sure if that is customary. — Daniel Mahu · talk · 01:52, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you think that it is necessary, by all means. It cannot do any harm, and I have used the method before (so have others). Dahn 02:10, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
