The Nifties:
The Nifties was an Orlando-based musical group started in 1994 with three high school friends from Eustis, FL: Doug Paul (acoustic & electric guitar, vocals), Bob Brett (percussion and harmonica) and Troy Wilson (bass guitar and back-up vocals). Their sound was primarily acoustic and they added in electric guitar and alto saxophone (Ed Cehi) later.
The band started playing house parties and expanded to the club scene in and around Central Florida from 1995-1997. The first show was at BT Grinders on Chickasaw Trail followed by a show on the green at UCF. The band secured a residency at Cafe Tu Tu Tango in 1996 and performed there every weekend for 6 months. Venues like The Go Lounge, Kit Kat Club, Will’s Pub, The Loaded Hog, Sapphire Supper Club, Back Booth, Skinny's and Orlando Art Festival events were also common for this group.
The band’s single EP “Foyer”, recorded during student sessions at ARTI Studios in ‘94-‘95 was released in 1995. Selling at shows, events and out of the trunks of their cars, the 5-song CD sold around 1,000 copies. All songs were written by Doug Paul and arranged by Doug Paul, Troy Wilson and Bob Brett.
Splitting in 1998, the singer and writer, Doug Paul went on to perform solo-acoustic around Orlando for the following 4 years after a year in Nashville in 1999. He released an EP, entitled “In Transit” also in 1999.
In 2002, The Awakening formed with popular restaurant manager, Heidi Skehan on lead vocals and Doug taking a more utility role. The group performed for 18 months in many weekly events at Bodhisattva, at house parties, on Real Radio’s Melissa Foxx show and their tenure culminated in an opening slot for Sophie B. Hawkins on Sept 27, 2002 at The Social to a standing room only.
