OCLC good enough?[edit]

Perhaps some kind of adjustment is needed to the newspaper infobox. I am not certain that all valid newspapers have an ISSN. The Carillon is one for which I've found a valid OCLC, namely OCLC 17513456, which should be enough to get the ISSN Needed tag off Talk:The Carillon of its talk page. Thoughts? Couple of Questions[edit]

Purpose?[edit]

Are we trying to list an ISSN for every magazine in the List of X?

Keesiewonder talk 20:37, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Huh? This category is for identifying articles about serial publications in which we do not provide the publication's ISSN. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 00:05, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Talk page?[edit]

Why is the tag placed on the talk page instead of the article's page?

Because it is a cleanup category, of no interest to (or even distracting to) readers of the encyclopedia. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 00:05, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know about the first question, but I wondered about the second one myself, and discovered a possible answer at Template talk:ISSN-needed. User SimonP notes that because the template is directed at editors instead of readers, it belongs on the talk page. Reasonable-sounding advice, but I'm curious about the distinction. This particular template is listed at Wikipedia:Template messages/Maintenance, where in the bottom table a column titled "Where it goes" indicates placement. As far as I can tell, while almost all notice-type templates are indeed directed at editors, they also serve to notify readers with no interest in editing that a particular article may not be up to WP standards. However, if anyone knows of a more articulate rationale for the distinction, I'd be interested in reading it. -Tobogganoggin talk 06:07, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Articles are also added to this category..."[edit]

Newspaper infobox and magazine ones and so on should do this too, but as noted above, addition of an OCLC should also suffice, one way or another. My suggestion would be to have a "none" value that can be added to the ISSN parameter and not displayed, which will also remove it from this category. There are numerous articles on newspapers and such that predate the existence of ISSNs, and they should not be categorized here. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 00:05, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
