Contested deletion[edit]

This category should not be speedy deleted as being unpopulated, because category was deliberately emptied by Rillian. All of the people in this category are English, and it follows other wikipedia conventions. To my knowledge there are no Scottish or Welsh astronauts. --MacRùsgail (talk) 16:03, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia has used the category "British astronauts" since 2004. Without consensus MacRusgail[1] edited all the entries to read "English astronauts". I restored the articles to follow the standard convention: astronauts from the US are tagged with Category:American astronauts, astronauts from the UK are tagged with Category:British astronauts, etc. Cheers Rillian (talk) 00:34, 3 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Utter rubbish. Not all of the entries were changed, but you haven't bothered to check that up have you? All the rest are English people (there are no Scots, Irish or Welsh), and so it is perfectly appropriate to stick them in English categories, as English actors/footballers/biologists/soldiers etc all are. It is in line with usage elsewhere.--MacRùsgail (talk) 15:25, 4 January 2013 (UTC) p.s. Whenever I hear people whittering on about "consensus" on Wikipedia, they generally mean nothing of the sort.[reply]
Let's see. English astronauts had zero people in it. You then edited six articles (Michael Foale, Gregory H. Johnson, Nicholas Patrick, Timothy Peake, Piers Sellers, and Helen Sharman) to change "British astronauts" to "English astronaunts". When you were done, the category had six people in it. That seems like all to me. Cheers, 23:51, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
  • It seems a little odd to have the status quo; at the moment, we have three in English and three in British; two of those are from Sheffield and Louth respectively, and only the last one (Shuttleworth) has no identifiable "national" affiliation. (I've removed Johnson, who seems to be a misfiled American citizen). Either we should sort everyone but Shuttleworth into English, or (my preference) keep all in British - it's a pretty small category and so not much need to break it up.
