Fictional variants[edit]

Does this category include writers who have invented games similar to chess but not made up all the rules, because the full game is not needed for the plot? I am thinking of Thud! in the Terry Pratchett book and the three dimensional chess board that often turns up on Star Trek. This is assuming the rules haven't just been created anyway).
