Question from Jezzda (01:52, 1 May 2024)[edit]

Hello Mujinga, would you please explain the etiquette for modifying another editor's work? More specifically, if a user has added information without a source or with a source that doesn't appear to support the information. If a different editor can't find a suitable source for the previous user's information, is removing the information (and explaining the removal in the change log) a suitable remedy? What should an editor do if they suspect a citation request won't be actioned quickly? Should an editor leave the information and instead edit the language to ensure readers understand that the information is alleged/unconfirmed?

I'm sure much of this is would be on a case-by-case basis but I'm interested to know your thoughts. Thank you :) --Jezzda (talk) 01:52, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Jezzda welcome to wikipedia! there's quite a lot of questions there and indeed case by case is normally easier to discuss but happy to answer in broad terms as well (and look at specific examples later). Wikipedia is all about people being bold to make edits, so feel free to get involved, that's how we all started probably, wanting to fix something :) If someone disagrees and reverts your edit, the next step would be to discuss on the relevant talkpage and in the ideal case reach consensus, which I can't say always happens but it's nice when it does. Pretty much everything on wikipedia should be sourced, so you are welcoem to remove unsourced or badly sourced information. This is particularly true for articles about living people so that false or malicious information does not stay up long.
"If a different editor can't find a suitable source for the previous user's information, is removing the information (and explaining the removal in the change log) a suitable remedy?" - yes i would say so, it might be a trigger for a longer discussion and that's good, we all want to improve the encyclopedia.
"What should an editor do if they suspect a citation request won't be actioned quickly?" - if i put in a request for source, i would wait at least a week before removing the information, just to give others a chance to respond, but it really depends on context ... if it's libellous, don't wait ... if you know who added the info you could go to their talkpage to chat about it...
" Should an editor leave the information and instead edit the language to ensure readers understand that the information is alleged/unconfirmed?" I wuldn't edit the langauge no, i'd prob remove the statement or add a citation needed tag, using Template:Citation needed
Hope that helps, feel free to discuss more :) Normally I'll respond quicker but I was visiting friends these last days. Mujinga (talk) 16:24, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Jezzda (08:39, 1 May 2024)[edit]

Hey Mujinga, so I only really learnt about and understood that Wikipedia has a 'Simple English' version today and almost made some very embarrassing mistakes without knowing that. I'd like to know whether the pages on 'Simple English' should be viewed as though it's any other language of Wikipedia or not. Should I copy over large amounts of text from the standard wiki and attempt to edit the language into a more readable format in-line with the 'Basic English' of Wikipedia's 'simple' version? --Jezzda (talk) 08:39, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Jezzda I cant really answer questions about the simple english wikipedia since each language wikipedia has its own conventions. From a quick look, I'd advise checking https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents. Plus don't worry, you are a beginner and you cannot definitely break anything since all changes can be rolled back, so noone will get cross. Happy editing! Question from Bisonseek (12:50, 4 May 2024)[edit]

how will i come to know whether the article has some issue --Bisonseek (talk) 12:50, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Bisonseek hello! well there's lots of different ways to edit a wikipedia article, you might want to add information cited to a reliable source or correct a spelling mistake. i've put some helpful links for you at User talk:Bisonseek. happy editing! Mujinga (talk) 17:16, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Pedunculate (17:51, 5 May 2024)[edit]

hello, how do i correct a link please? --Pedunculate (talk) 17:51, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Pedunculate can you be more specific please? Mujinga (talk) 18:10, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thank you for your reply; on the perse school wikipedia page under 'notable perseans' there is listed 'Matthew Lloyd, theatre director, Royal Exchange, Manchester'; however his name links to another Matthew Lloyd who is a football player in australia. please excuse lack of caitals; my keyboard seems to be broken. 2A01:CB19:7D8:8B00:A8FA:8517:2BF0:80A (talk) 18:18, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Pedunculate i think you must have forgotten to login? i see what you mean on Matthew Lloyd - since there is no theatre director listed at Matthew Lloyd (disambiguation) it's probably best simply to remove the entire reference to Lloyd at The Perse School unless you have a reliable source for the information. hope that helps. Mujinga (talk) 18:26, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thank you, will do. Pedunculate (talk) 19:37, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Scordier (15:22, 6 May 2024)[edit]

Hello! Can you give some tips to make citations?

Thank you for advance! --Scordier (talk) 15:22, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Scordier hiya! i just put some handy links at User talk:Scordier and to answer your question, Wikipedia:Citing sources lays it all out - it can be a bit overwhelming at first, but it quickly becomes second nature! Mujinga (talk) 15:47, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Msouryadeepta (17:03, 9 May 2024)[edit]

Hey there, I have been trying to draft my first Wikipedia article and got rejected quite a lot of times for formats and views. Would you suggest me how is it different from an article? Suppose I am writing on a subject, what should I focus on more? Would love to know more about it. Thanks. --Msouryadeepta (talk) 17:03, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Msouryadeepta Sure, I'll get back to you after I've eaten! Mujinga (talk) 17:43, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sure Mujinga! Will look forward to your response. Msouryadeepta (talk) 18:05, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Msouryadeepta hi again! So:
1 Draft:Souryadeepta Majumdar is presumably writing about yourself? Almost always a bad idea, since it's hard to be objective about your own achievements
2 Draft:Data_Driven_Astronomy - well, you have been given good advice alreasdy by two separate reviewers. Although you did add references, you didn't add them inline except in one case, whichn is unfortunate. To see how a wikipedia article should be referenced, let's look at Horned sungem, today's featured article, which means it is on the main page. Firstly you have the lead, the summary part, which doesnt need references becuase it summarises the article body, where all the claims are referenced. And under in the body, everything is referenced inline, for example The specimen originally illustrated by Temminck in 1820, now considered as the type specimen of the species, is part of the collection of the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden [5] with 5 being the link to the reference.
Does this help? Mujinga (talk) 20:37, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well @Mujinga, this was exactly the specific guidance I was seeking as it wasnt clear on how I can shape the format and references to make it better. Surely, it does help! Thanks a lot for your support! Will sirely reach out for further queries if needed. Msouryadeepta (talk) 04:06, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Msouryadeepta That's good to hear, feel free to reach out with any other wikipedia-related queries, happy editing! Mujinga (talk) 07:37, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

okay, really i need your help Mr. Vikash Thakur (talk) 17:26, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mr. Vikash Thakur hiya the article is not bad for a first attempt, well done you!! it probably would not in my opinion pass through the Wikipedia:Articles for creation process yet, which is where this is headed, with a bit more work first I think it'll be good-to-go.
At first I was sceptical because there are a lot of purely promotional article attempts on wikipedia, but this guy does seem notable on wikipedia standards because he does have significant coverage in reliable sources. The inman and entrepreneur sources are decent, and I found on a quick look this source saying he was 2023 Commencement speaker at Luther which would be worth adding. I'll put some comments now ... Mujinga (talk) 10:11, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1 Do you know the subject of the article? If you do, that's not necessarily a problem but it should be disclosed, following Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest#howtodisclose
2 WP:PROMO is also worth a read, although so far I think you have steered clear of being overly promotional
3 Right now the article is quite well sourced, but the "Early life and education" section has no sources. As a rough rule of thumb, every paragraph in the article body should have at least one citation on it
4 Despite 3, the article lead tends not to need citations, since it should only be summarising information cited below in the article body. Does that make sense?
5 There appear to be many iterations of Luther College so please specify which one you mean if you click through the link.
6 The Forbes and CNBC links aren't great and could be replaced with better ones.
Let me know if you have further questions and/or head on over to Wikipedia:Articles for creation!
Happy editing Mujinga (talk) 10:17, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from DeepnessSky (06:58, 14 May 2024)[edit]

How do I fix an error in the format column:

List_of_digital_television_channels_in_Australia

There are 3 radio stations that are Mono instead of Stereo:

25 ABC Sydney 26 ABC RN 204 ABC NewsRadio

I don't know how to do this. --DeepnessSky (talk) 06:58, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @DeepnessSky first step would be to know if you have a reference from a reliable source for this change? It can be hard to get one's head around at first, but wikipedia needs to be verifiable, so even if you know something to be true, you need to "prove it" with a reference so others can check it. Wikipedia:Verifiability covers this in more detail. Cheers! Mujinga (talk) 10:19, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Mr. Vikash Thakur (04:29, 2 June 2024)[edit]

Hello, I need your help urgently. i have submit a draft article for approval but this was removed by team and received a massage on my talk... i have receive this massage "Hello Mr. Vikash Thakur. The nature of your edits, such as the one you made to Draft:Juego Studios, gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being compensated by a person, group, company or organization to use Wikipedia to promote their interests. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Mr. Vikash Thakur. The template

can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form:

. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. Sam Kuru --Mr. Vikash Thakur (talk) 04:29, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Mr. Vikash Thakur that's a standard message concerning a conflict of interest, which long-standing editor Kuru thinks you have. How to progress? Well, like you have done, by replying. You've said you are "not receiving any compensation for my edits on Wikipedia" but can i clarify, do you have a connection of any kind to Juego Studios? It's ok if you do, but then it should be declared, as the message indicates. I can't se the draft, which has been deleted for being promotional. This means it doesn't meet the wikipedia standards ... to take it the other way round, an article needs to be reliably sourced (Wikipedia:Reliable sources)and written from a neutral point of view (Wikipedia:Neutral point of view). Maybe give them a read. By all means carry on editing! Mujinga (talk) 08:49, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Corny Copia (14:28, 3 June 2024)[edit]

Thanks. I was not sure how to make an addition to the list of notables from Hamburg, Iowa. All of the other entries seemed to have used a lot of [ ] sort of things? --Corny Copia (talk) 14:28, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya are we talking about Hamburg,_Iowa#Notable_people? In a list such as that, entries would be expected to have a blue link not a red link, that is to say an already existing wiki article about them and ideally a citation too. When making an edit, on wiki we use xx where xx is the name to code a link to the article in question. And that gives a redlink since there is no page for xx. Hope that makes sense!
