Improving the To Do list

I know you asked me if there is anything in the list I can pick up. I fear the answer is that, currently, there is nothing within my knowledge or skillset. I have a suggestion, albeit a trivial one. Look at {{todo}} and consider using it for the to do list. It's easy to implement, but I didn't attempt it because I wanted you to have a look first. Fiddle Faddle 14:57, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

The archives

External resource

As many of you probably know, I manage Train Spotting World, where trams feature within the wiki. The resource offers things not available on WP, such as google maps, videos, etc. This project is welcome to use TSW as a resource when such items are required. I'm specifically not adding it myself to the project page. That is up to decisions from the project team as a while. Fiddle Faddle 10:51, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Clyde Fastlink

A new wiki specially for Trains... And Trams/Streetcars etc...

Hello readers of WikiProject UK Trams!

I just wondered if any of you would be interested in joining up to Train Spotting World, a wiki just for railways and similar things, including Trams, which may be split into a new wiki - Tram Spotting World!!! We are also in the process of setting up several "Workforces", similar to WikiProjects, and were wondering if anyone wnated to help!

Various Wikipedians have gone over there, including myself, User:Tbo157, User:Slambo, User:EdJogg, User:Timtrent and User:S.C.Ruffeyfan.

If you want more info, or have joined up and want some guidance, let me know here or there on my talk page!

Just wanted to point out that the intention is NOT to 'poach' editors from WP -- you are needed here!
All the listed editors are still active at WP, but TSW allows a little more creative freedom...

As the guy who set it up, I see it as a colleague wiki and a resource for adding things that are unacceptable on Wikipedia. Poaching editors would be wrong. We hope one day that we will be proposed for an interwiki link. WP is an encyclopaedia. Train Spotting World is very much more "fan oriented", thus the two are siblings, not rivals. Historic tramways - any conventions?

Is there any form of consensus with regards to the naming of articles based on historic tramways? I'd like to start some articles about defunct tram systems in and around Lancashire, but I note certain inconsistencies on article name/title based on pre-existing articles, e.g. Sheffield Tramway is so named because it refers to both the private Sheffield Tramways Company and the municipal Sheffield Corporation Tramways; Ilkeston Corporation Tramways is named after the municipal operator; Doncaster Tramway was operated by Doncaster Corporation Tramways but isn't named after it; Bristol Tramways seems to be named after the company rather than being a proper noun. Which is preferable? It seems to me that 'Xyz Tramway' would be the best generic article name for a tramway based on the town of Xyz, regardless of the name of the operator, but this implies that if there was more than one company responsible for operating the system then they should not have seperate articles as Nottingham and District Tramways Company Limited and Nottingham Corporation Tramways seem to have.

Also of note is that articles look better with the inclusion of Template:Infobox rail at the top, along with a system map. Not really made any graphics for Wikipedia before, but am willing to give it a go! Divy (talk) 17:37, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello,

The easiest thing is to name them as generally as possible if they are short and stubby, and if they are quite large, split them to the companies.

We are working on infoboxes, specifically for Trams, as the rail one is primarily for Trains.

What images were you thinking of?

Ok. Feel free to make them! An alternative for short lines is to either list the stops (as in Sheffield Supertram), or create a line map using BSicons (as in National Tramway Museum).

I would suggest that the general WP policy should be used. For instance, was 'Doncaster Tramway' ever known by this title? It would seem not from the article, and I would suggest it should be moved to Doncaster Corporation Tramways instead. However, where no other title is more appropriate, "Xyz tramways" would be appropriate -- careful with the capitalisation though, only use 'Tramways' where this was a name actually used.

Tagging

Should all tram articles also be tagged with WP:Trains and WP:UKRailways as well as the WP:UKTrams tag? Mjroots (talk) 10:59, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

If you consider it from a hierarchial viewpoint, then it becomes clearer(ish). "Train" includes most of what you might call rail vehicles employing "steel-wheel on steel-rail". Therefore a tram is a subset of the group train. The subset "trains" should therefore include all forms of such transport in the UK. Now a "railway" is all forms of guided transport, which also includes trams. So I would have to say that the answer to your question is "yes, yes". It all comes back to how you classify things ... which can be a very nasty can of worms. Olana North (talk) 11:34, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). UK Trams articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the UK Trams articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. Track gauge categories

Per discussion at WT:TWP, new track gauge categories have been created. Tramway systems fall under these categories, which are sub-cats of Category:Broad gauge railways, Category:Standard gauge railways and Category:Narrow gauge railways. Concerning Manchester Metrolink stops which are not on a segregated line but situated in a street or other thoroughfare: does such a stop deserve its own article, or should it be covered in an article primarily concerning the street concerned? Please help get tram-related listed structures ready for the start of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition on 1st September

In September the UK is taking part for the first time in the international photography competition Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants will be invited to submit pictures of listed structures of significant importance (eg grades I or grade II* or equivalent), as recorded by English Heritage, Historic Scotland, Cadw and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency . The main external website for competitors can be found here, and you can leave a message there if you have queries about competing. Do please join in, and let people in your local area know of this excellent way in which both existing and new Wiki users can help improve the encyclopaedia by contributing photographs of local listed structures. What about organizing a local Wikimeet to attract new people?

In preparation for the start of the competition on 1st September there is still quite a lot of work to do, and we would like to ask for the help of members of this wikiproject. Many of the listed structures are residential or other buildings, but there are a significant number of tram-related listed structures that may be of specific interest to members of this project. Your local and expert knowledge will be invaluable in ensuring that the lists of eligible structures are up to date and correctly formatted. If you look at Listed buildings in the United Kingdom you will see how many structures are included. If you then follow the links, you can get to the detailed lists for your area. Alternatively have a look at the WLM planning table. Can you help to ensure that the lists for your area are up to date and well presented?

Some of the lists have been semi-automatically generated from data provided by the official listing organizations. These use pre formatted templates (eg EH header) which will make it much easier for competition participants to upload their photographs to Commons as an automated process. Please don't change the template structure, as we need to ensure that the templates are properly compatible with the WLM standards that are in use worldwide. The format will allow a bot automatically to collect the information and to put it into the international Monuments Database.

The data still needs the attention of local editors:

• The "title" may need wikilinking to a suitable article name (whether we currently have that article or not). If there are several buildings in one street all of the wikilinks point at an article about the street; however each entry has a separate line in the list.
• The "location" column looks and sorts better if just the parish or town is included (& wikilinked).
• The "date completed" column sometimes has eg "C19" for 19th century, and "C1850" for c. 1850 when the date is uncertain - these need to be corrected manually.
• The "grid ref & lat & long" (which is occasionally missing) may be given to 8 characters — only 6 (grid ref) or 5 (lat & long) are really needed.
• Clicking on the "list entry number" should take you to the data sheet for that entry on the official database which can be checked if needed for details.
• The image column should have a picture added if we already have a suitable image on Commons. (N.B. if you are going to be taking photos yourself for inclusion in the competition don't upload them until September)
• References may be added according to normal WP practice.

Leaflet for Wikiproject UK Trams at Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you?
