Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Tell or Tal Abyad

There is a title->text mismatch in this entry on Tell_Abyad. If the correct place name of the town is Tell Abyad, then the text should refer to it as such, not Tal Abyad as it does now.

Districts of Al-Hasakah

I don't know anything about the organisation of districts, etc. in Syria. Does Category:Districts of Al-Hasakah have the same scope as Category:Districts of Al-Hasakah Governorate? If so, should they be put up for WP:CFM? --Redrose64 (talk) 10:44, 1 April 2015 (UTC)

Bulky Syria governorate navigation templates

Hello all. The templates for Syria's various governorates (see HERE) have become very bulky and messy to the point where it almost defeats their purpose, which is to allow readers to easily navigate through the articles on Syria's towns and villages. Back when Yazan and I were designing these templates we devised unofficial guidelines that basically limited the templates to include district (mantiqa) and subdistrict (nahiya) centers and sizable villages (populations of ~2,000 or more). Exceptions were given for smaller villages if they were historically significant. These guidelines were unilateral, unofficial and do not translate into Wikipedia rules. However, the purpose of the guidelines was to ensure a neat, easily navigable template that directed readers to the major/semi-major localities of Syria. Currently, the templates are filled with villages with populations in the low 100s and even farms that were included in the 2004 census. Also, there does not seem to be any alphabetical organization to the articles. It's just a big mess of blue links.

I'm proposing two solutions:

1). We revert back to the old guidelines, which I think is the best solution.
2.) We replace the governorate templates with district templates. So instead of the Hama Governorate => Hama District, Al-Suqaylabiyah District, Masyaf District, etc. it would be Al-Suqaylabiyah District => Al-Suqaylabiyah Subdistrict, Qalaat al-Mudiq Subdistrict, etc. See rough example here.

Let me know what you all think of my proposals or if you have any alternative solutions. The current state of these templates is unfeasible. --Al Ameer (talk) 00:12, 13 May 2015 (UTC)

Al Ameer Hi, The main target of adding these links is to facilitate access to these villages from well-known and popular articles and the another reason that name of these villages is difficult for users to find them because of non-English titles and problems in pronounce and write the same titles in their articles.
I still think that a good template as is. In general, you're right, But I don't know what is the best way to easily link and find this articles. --Zaher talk 19:27, 13 May 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. I am looking at examples for other countries with well-developed "wiki-infrastructure" (if that's what it's called) and seeing which formats could best be applied for Syria's governorates. I think ultimately some of the really tiny places might be left out, but there could be a solution for them too.
As for the names, a standard English spelling of Arabic words should be used for every article. In general, for Levantine localities we use "Umm" instead of Om or Um, "Kafr" instead of Kfar, Kafar, Kafer, etc., "Al-Blank" instead of "Elblank", "Qalaat" instead of Qal'at, Kal'at, "Tell" instead of Tel, Tal, or Tall, "Jubb" instead of Jeb or Job, and so on. The other spellings could be mentioned as alternative spellings in the article itself and as redirects. This should hopefully stem confusion for editors and readers alike. It would be nice if we could have a table that lists all of this on the Levantine WikiProject pages. --Al Ameer (talk) 16:29, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
I have reorganized the template based off of subdistricts (nawahi) and am currently in the process of renaming many of the articles to conform with standardized Arabic transliterations, cleaning them up and adding coordinates. The template is still bulky, but much better organized. I still support cutting out places with tiny populations, but maybe instead of ~2,000 people, it could be something like less than ~500. Anyway, until a different solution could be agreed on, this is probably the best way for now. See the revised template HERE. --Al Ameer (talk) 17:45, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
This may be somewhat different, but it's about the names. I notice there's an inconsistency where the names of governorates and subdistricts like Raqqa, Hasaka, Safira, Qusayr, and others have an "al" added to them. This appears unique to Syria, as the articles for Rabat, Bayda, Libya, Ismaïlia, Kuwait, and Basra don't have the "al", which would be redundant since al is a mere definitive article unnecessary for English language proper nouns. Another issue I find is the inconsistency of naming the capital Dimashq as Damascus, while the governorate around it Rif Dimashq is left as-is.
I'm not sure of the relevant guidelines here, but from what I understand, common English names should be preserved. Constructs like Ar-Raqqah or Rif Dimashq appear to be exclusive to Wikipedia. NightShadeAEB (talk) 02:35, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
For example, Googling Raqqa gives 786,000 results on Google. Raqqah gives 369,000, Al Raqqa in quotation marks gives 141,000, Ar Raqqa gives 71,700. Ar-Raqqah gives 338,000, but I suspect that is largely due to Wikipedia's popularity. NightShadeAEB (talk) 02:39, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
I'm glad you've brought this up. I was going to propose that a table be devised for how to spell Arabic place names as there is a general confusion out there for English readers. There should be a consistency in how these places are spelled. I've been trying to do this, along with some editors who are mostly inactive now, for a while. Basically, the standards we've been using for Syrian articles is to strike a balance between staying as faithful to the Arabic spelling as possible but also highly considering the common name used by English sources. Sometimes the two coincide but often times the common name used by English sources isn't really a single common name, but instead a variety of similar spellings. Therefore, to keep things consistent, I lean more towards staying faithful to the Arabic spelling which is easier to use as a model. The colloquial pronunciation, which many times sounds very different from the Modern Standard Arabic spelling or the common English spelling, is also a factor that is considered, but less so. The reason it is less considered, is because it becomes difficult for us English-speaking editors who aren't native to Syria to accurately know or spell those names which in Arabic are still spelled in MSA. WP-MoS Arabic might be useful as a guideline for the creation of a table of spellings or a guideline for Arabic place names in the Levant and elsewhere in the Arab world. --Al Ameer (talk) 03:24, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
I think the article "al-" should be kept because that is how these places are listed in the Syrian census and it's just the way they're spelled in Arabic. Not all of them of course. But wherever you see an article with an "al" or any of its variants, it's because that's how the name is officially spelled in Arabic and transliterated in English. However, I'm not dead set on that position. Generally, with articles on Syrian places we keep the "-ah" for places that end with ـق (qāf) like Raqqah (الرقة). --Al Ameer (talk) 03:24, 3 June 2015 (UTC)

Hello, I took a crack at finding sources. Things are pretty sparse online, I only found one substantial source aside from the elcinema entry. He is mentioned in this magazine and this one, but I can only see snippets so I can't tell if the coverage is significant. I think he probably meets WP:NACTOR for having notable roles since he appeared in several films which have articles on the Arabic wikipedia, e.g. ar:الموت القادم إلى الشرق (مسلسل), ar:البحث عن صلاح الدين (مسلسل), and ar:آخر الفرسان (مسلسل). Khirbet Hazur - official name

Article created by Zaher.Kadour, I would like his input as well as input of others to determine whether Khirbet Hazur has any other official name or not. Currently we are having dispute over it on the article. According to Google searches number, I find more search results for "Khirbet Hazur" than any other related names like "Khirbat-Hazzour". Syrian Census Office WWW site address

I have rescued a dead link to a 2004 Census Table in the Shinshar article by replacing www.cbssyr.org with www.cbssyr.sy (chg). Probably similar fix should be done in other articles (special:search/cbssyr.org). However I expect the linked page contents should be verified each time by a human editor and it needs someone who can read Arabic, so I make this note here instead of Wikipedia:Bot requests. --CiaPan (talk) 08:09, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

Photos of Syria on Wikimedia Commons

For years, Syria has been the scene of a bloody civil war resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths, millions of refugees, and the destruction of entire cities. The recent image donation by the Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen (the National Museum of World Cultures) in the Netherlands shows another Syria. Many of these photos were taken in the 1980s and show scenes of daily life and images and cities not yet devastated by war. Other images show objects from the collection of the museum. Together, they form a valuable resource on Syria for the various Wikimedia projects. The upload consists of 352 photos in total and can be accessed here. It coincides with a photo exhibition in the NMvW on Aleppo. The upload was part of the project The Netherlands and the World, which aims to make accessible Dutch collections on non-European heritage. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

New article(s) assessment request

Would someone from WP:SY take a look at Haj Fadel Government and Fadel Al-Aboud and assess them? They have both been newly created by the same editor and didn't pass through WP:AFC for review. Also, I'm not sure of the naming convention followed for Syrian names, but I'm wondering if "Fadel Al-Aboud" should be "Fadel al-Aboud" instead since in some Wikipedia articles with similar last names the "A" in "Al" is lower case. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:12, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? I have created articles for all governments under the presidency of Bashar al-Assad and improved some of the existing ones:

Village 3imm عم between Aleppo and Antioch

Hello everyone I'm currently trying to rework the Ibn Butlan article in my sandbox and on his travels he speaks of a village between Aleppo and Antioch, which I cannot find. The account is from the 11th century and can be found on page 296 of this account by Bin al Qifti quoting from a missive Ibn Butlan wrote. https://archive.org/details/TarikhAlHukama/page/n227/mode/2up Its name is only spelled as بلدة تُعْرَفُ عم in the versions of al Qifti's text I can find, without diacritics, tho in a translation by Schacht and Meyerhof they transliterate it as ʿImm, but they sometimes get these names wrong in this text.

The village must lie on the one day and one night travel between the two cities, and must have been under Byzantine control during the 11th century. It must have had a spring which was used for fishing, and a watermill, and probably along some sort of waterway along with many other villages as I understand Ibn Butlan's comments quoted by Yaqut al-Hamawi. Which as I understand it means the traditional route between these two cities probably follows those waterways in some way as well. It must have had lots of pigs and prostitution (in the 11th century at least) and four churches and one mosque (whose call for prayer was carried out in secret during times of Byzantine rule).

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
