Settlements?

Do Hoosiers think of their cities as settlements? Well, check out Category:Settlements in Indiana that's as of today in your category hierarchy. I reverted it out for Kentucky, and I recommend all states do it as well. Kentucky uses "Subdivisions" and Massachusetts uses "Administrative divisions" (both reasonable). Dot Maps

Hello all. I am considering replacing the red dot maps that I made for Indiana with new-fangled SVG versions, using more "standard" map colors, the Superimpose template, blah blah blah. Something like this:

Vandalism to Lafayette article

Hello, I'm not associated with this project and wanted to alert you to some vandalism at the Lafayette, Indiana article, which is rated "high-importance" by your project. I've noticed that User:74.38.50.249 has changed the US Census demographic data (such as the city's racial makeup and median income) several times since late February (see here, here, here, and here), apparently without anybody else noticing -- nobody seems to have undone the damage, in any case. I reverted the "demographics" section to the 2/24/07 version, which I checked against the original automated upload from back when this article was started in 2002. The article might benefit from having some responsible editors place it on their watchlist, so that they can revert such vandalism when it occurs. --Malepheasant 23:54, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Your friendly neighbor to the South

I can't remember if I have approached WikiProject Indiana before, but I founded WikiProject Louisville around a year ago, making it cover the entire Louisville metropolitan area, which includes four Southern Indiana counties. Because of this, WPLouisville considers itself a child project of not only WP-KY, but also WP-IN. If anybody in WP-IN has a particular interest in Southern Indiana, we welcome them to join WPLouisville as well. We already have achieved pretty good coverage of Southern Indiana subjects, but certainly, more assistance is a good thing. There's actually five counties included: Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Scott, and Washington. I know, I know, nitpicking. I am quite tempted to make a Southcentral Indiana portal, so I can include this five in an area separate from Louisville, and maybe add a few more counties to it: Jackson, Jefferson, Lawrence, Orange, and Crawford.--Bedford 21:44, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
I think that Scott County is not currently in the Louisville MSA, but rather it's in the Louisville CSA, which also adds two additional counties in Kentucky, Hardin and Larue. If you think WPLouisville should cover the entire CSA, that's something we could discuss. Also, couldn't the Indiana Portal add more emphasis to Southern Indiana instead of creating a whole new portal? Just a thought. Stevie is the man! Talk • Work 22:11, 29 May 2007 (UTC)

Please help! There has been repeated severe and obscene vandalism on IWU's page by the user "Lilmissjess." Please notify Wikipedia authorities and have him blocked immediately. County templates

All 92 of the counties now have templates. It should be noted that the lists of unincorporated communities in these templates come from the USGS GNIS and include designated places that may never have articles or that are extinct towns and may have historical articles but should not be listed as extant communities. The IWU article was recently vandalized by user: 199.8.26.10, who deleted the entire school "History" section. I tried to restore it, but I was not able to do so. Could you please investigate and restore what was vandalized?

South Bend

I have been working (very slowly) over the last couple of years to improve the article on South Bend. At this point I don't know if anyone else is even watching the South Bend article, so I am looking for help here. I would like to get it up to Good Article standards soon. At this point I am having difficulty finding decent, up to date sources other than websites, especially for the history after the 19th century. Anyone know of any good books that might help me out? Indiana Historical Society

Just an FYI, I have contact the Indiana Historical Society to see if they would be willing to release a portion of their image archives under the terms of the GFDL for use on the Wikipedia. I am not sure how they will respond, but it would be really great if they would make available some of their images. Territorial expansionism by Indiana Wikiproject??

For some reason, Return J. Meigs, Sr. has been twice tagged for this Wikiproject, and I've now removed the template twice. The article subject was born in Connecticut, made major contributions in Ohio and Tennessee, and died in Tennessee, but I see no hint of Indiana in his bio. My best guess is that he's tagged because Northwest Territory is linked in the article about him, but that does not make him an Indiana person.

If the bot is being asked to tag all Northwest Territory-related articles for this Wikiproject, it's probably expanding the Wikiproject's territory far beyond the borders of Indiana! --Orlady (talk) 15:31, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

He was tagged due to inclusion in Category:Northwest Territory officials which is listed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Indiana/Categories; if this category is too wide it should be removed (and its members examined for other erroneous Indiana tags). The Northwest Territory encompassed the entire region of modern Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan. As a result, Category:Northwest Territory officials is of interest to this Wikiproject, but it is not reasonable treat every person in that category as being relevant to the Wikiproject.
I don't necessarily want to ban Xenobot from ever tagging the Return J. Meigs, Sr. page -- I just want it to quit tagging the page for the Indiana Wikiproject. --Orlady (talk) 15:41, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
Sure, someone from Indiana should confirm that the entire category isn't really in their area of interest and remove the category from the bot's worklist (and tag manually). =) That way the "deny" won't be necessary. –xenotalk 15:45, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
Parts of the category are definatly within Indiana's project scope. John Johnston (Indian Agent) for example. Northwest Territorial officials are also within the scop of the project as predecssors to the officials of the Indiana Territoy. Where is/was Wendell College?

I'm trying to track down the college mentioned in Monica Sone's memoir, Nisei Daughter. She says that during WW2, she was allowed to enroll in Wendell College in Indiana--but I can't find any mention of this school online other than her book. She says the school was in the southern part of the state, on the Ohio River, and affiliated with the Presbyterian church. Did the school change its name or close? Thanks. The only religous school of higher learning in southern Indiana I am aware of is St. Meinrad Archabbey. The only notable presbyterian school in the state I am aware of is Wabash College, but it is in central Indiana. If it is on the Ohio River, it was probably either in Evansville, New Albany or Jeffersonville, or Madison. There are no other sizable Indiana cities on the Ohio River. I'd guess it is closed since there is no note of it online. There are several Wendell Wilkie High Schools, middles schools, and elementary schools. There is a Wendell Phelps High School in Chicago. Indianapolis project inactive

As detailed in last week's Signpost, WildBot has been patrolling Wikipedia-Books and searched for various problems in them, such as books having duplicate articles or containing redirects. WikiProject Wikipedia-Books is in the process of cleaning them up, but help would be appreciated. For this project, the following books have problems:

The problem reports explain in details what exactly are the problems, why they are problems, and how to fix them. This way anyone can fix them even if they aren't familiar with books. If you don't see something that looks like this, then all problems have been fixed. (Please strike articles from this list as the problems get fixed.)

Also, the {{saved book}} template has been updated to allow editors to specify the default covers of books (title, subtitle, cover-image, cover-color), and gives are preview of the default cover on the book's page. An example of such a cover is found on the right. Ideally, all books in Category:Book-Class Indiana articles should have covers.

Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 35,715 as of May 1. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Barbara Kingsolver

Hello, I'm re-working the article about American author Barbara Kingsolver, and it currently is listed as an article in the Indiana project. I just wanted to check-in and see if she really ought to be listed in this project; although she graduated from an Indiana university (DePauw), she wasn't born there, doesn't appear to have grown up there (although I haven't got a complete biography of her early years) and doesn't live there now. Would any of the editors here be upset if I removed the Indiana Project templates from her talkpage? They just don't seem to fit. Thank you! Jhfortier (talk) 03:40, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

US Veterans category links

As an outsider, shouldn't Category:United States military veterans from Indiana and its subcats link also to the general category for Americans in each of the wars; eg Category:People from Indiana in the Iraq War should link (as a subcat. of) as well to either Category:American people of the Iraq War or Category:American military personnel of the Iraq War. Ok guys, I've put together two lists - one of topics that I think are not of great importance and could be removed from 0.8 as far as Indiana is concerned, and a list that should probably be included. They have picked 167 of our articles to include. I note the pick seems to have a significant tilt towards sports, of that category I am only proposing we remove the less notable sports topics.

Not needed:

These article I think are not of sufficient quality to merit inclusion, in addition to some not being notable enough

There are only a few articles not included that I think should be, some are pretty obvious

And some important, but not well developed topics I am iffy about.

OK, I've added detailed comments here. The articles on Indiana and Mitch Daniels were already included - the former is VERY highly ranked, for obvious reasons. Most of the scientists, sports figures, etc are included for their importance in their fields, not for their importance to Indiana; we will only consider removing them if the primary WikiProject for that article requests it. I have added most of the proposed additions - many nice suggestions, thanks - though I left out Angel Mounds and Indiana Hoosiers.
I would like to get a second (third?) opinion on the articles Harrison County, Indiana, Columbus, Indiana and Jeffersonville, Indiana. Should I exclude these as being unimportant? Thanks, Walkerma (talk) 03:50, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. School Stubs

I went through all of the Low-importance articles, from stubs to FAs. I noticed that only high schools and specialized schools have been assessed above stub status. Do we have an example anywhere of what, for example, a Start quality article on an elementary school might look like? Collaboration with the Children's Museum of Indianapolis

Hello!
I thought it important that WikiProject Indiana be apprised of the continued Wikipedia Wikipedia collaboration with the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. You can check out my brief overview in the Children's Museum blog, which includes details on the Apprentice Program project to create five new Wikipedia articles as well as the image donation and use of the new Wikipedia Widget to link the museum's website to Wikipedia.

Last month we completed our first museum image content donation of 30 images. While this seems to be a low number, what makes the donation unique is the curatorial involvement in choosing and vetting the images for their appropriateness and usefulness within Wikimedia (many of the objects are copyrighted toys and other works that have copyright restrictions.) The curators in the collections department were very hands-on in their involvement, and we'll be outlining this process in an upcoming case study. If you would like to help further this process, I'd be happy for you to help disperse the images into useful Wikipedia articles, or let the appropriate WikiProjects know of the new images. Another 30 will be uploaded in the coming month.

The Museum Apprentice Program project resulted in five new articles that relate to WikiProject Indianapolis. They each compile information on some of the museum's most iconic objects: Bucky (Tyrannosaurus rex), Fireworks of Glass, Water clock (Indianapolis), Reuben Wells (locomotive), and the soon to be unveiled Captain Kidd's Cannon. Any tags, linkage, or updates you'd like to do to these articles are of course welcome.

In addition to the collaboration with the Museum Apprentice Program students and the curatorial department, another important collaboration was between User:Ealdgyth and the American Collections curators to significantly update the Broad Ripple Park Carousel article. This project should have a special interest in knowing that, after an impressive amount of time and work, the carousel is now a Featured Article. The museum is absolutely thrilled and will now be adding a QR code to the carousel exhibit Carousel: Wishes and Dreams. In the future, more QR codes will be added to the objects that have had articles written by the MAP students. We're excited by the success of this collaboration & will also be writing a case study on the process.

Hello. As information, I have upgraded the Blackford County stubs Montpelier, Indiana, Millgrove, Indiana, Converse, Blackford County, Indiana, and Renner, Indiana. I have also contributed a new article — Mollie, Indiana. I plan to upgrade Trenton, Indiana, Matamoras, Indiana, and Blackford County, Indiana by the end of the year. Mitch Daniels

Hello all! I have recently been working on improving the Mitch Daniels article. It seems very likely he will run for President lately, and, there has been a big spike in readership of his article. This seems like an excellent opportunity for us to draw readers and potential contributors to our project's many articles. If anyone has spare time and would like to spend a little time copy-editing or expanding the article, it would be of great benefit the project as a whole. During the last presidential elections, the candidates' articles were getting hundreds of thousands of hits daily! Suggested Re-Assessments

Why are Paul Bako (journeyman baseball player, one year with minor league baseball team in Indiana), Ambrose Burnside (birth in Indiana), Rex Grossman (birth in Indiana), Walter Bedell Smith (birth in Indiana), or William S. Taylor (death in Indiana) listed as having mid importance to Indiana? Their only involvements with the state are births, deaths or minor athletic association. Please note that I am not discounting their importance to other WikiProjects, I just think their importance to Indiana is overstated. The following suggestion might evoke a strong response from Indy faithful, but I say the following respectfully. I question whether the Mario Andretti article should have high importance to the WikiProject Indiana. Andretti was not born and has not lived in Indiana. The association appears to be related solely to participating in racing competition in Indiana and writing a racing article for an Indiana newspaper. Does that meet criteria for high importance? Historical Bureau cooperation

If anyone reads this page — see this comment on my talk page from an IDNR representative; looks like they're planning on releasing almost all rights to most material on their website, with attribution being the only requirement. I know that this isn't a hoax: LoriLee, whom I know personally, has told me about off-wiki contact with this IDNR representative and with other Historical Bureau officials, who appear to be interested in Wikipedia collaboration. Place notability

Geographic places are usually notable as coverage in paper format can be assumed. Rare exceptions to that assumption can be deleted though. The article needs some cleaning up though. Agathoclea (talk) 10:38, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Packard Clipper

Some issue has arrisen about Packard Clipper which was tagged for this project due to the productionplant being in Indiana. Personally I feel it is relevant, but a large number of other car-makes are not country-wikiproject tagged so I agreed to remove the WPUS banner awaiting some input from this project. You don't need to request permission to make edits to articles. Be bold! If people don't like your changes, you'll find out fast enough. Your edits will have the best chance of standing if you cite a verifiable reliable source to support them. The Jeffersonville article has a notable residents section, you could add him to that list. Help with a contemporary bio

Hi, I'm working on this article on the current Democratic candidate in the 9th District congressional race in southern Indiana: [1] Anyone want to help? She's notable and significant; that's verifiable, but I'm not the greatest Wiki editor there is. Apparently, a review editor rejected a previous version (to which I've added additional third party sources and resubmitted). I also don't live in that part of the state, nor do I have a lot of experience editing political bios. If you cannot help, then can you point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance. Josh, you don't have to go through AfC. Just type the proposed page name in search. It will come up a redlink. Just click on the redlink and away you go. Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template

Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Leaflet For Wikiproject Indiana At Wikimania 2014

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

Hello all! I was curious if anyone else thought it might be a good idea to make a (nonbinding) guideline on how all the individual US state WikiProjects should organize themselves, to help standardize them. I originally put this suggestion in the WikiProject United States talk page, so feel free to look there if you're interested. It's pretty empty though; basically all they said was to see what each of the individual projects thought about it. Please tell me if you have any concerns with this idea; hopefully we can find a way for everyone to love it! US 50,000 Challenge invite

There was an underground ammunition factory operated by the Navy during WWII near North Judson. They planted the surface with pot as a source for hemp to make rope. It's thick in that area, or at least it was as recently as 20 years ago. However to use a photo, you'd need copy in the article on the subject. John from Idegon (talk) 06:09, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Access to archived copies of the Indiana Daily Student?

At Talk:Claude Ferguson, someone wants to cite a newspaper article that appeared in the Indiana Daily Student in 1977. I've asked them for additional bibliographical information; currently only author, title, newspaper and year are given, but no more precise date nor the page number. However, even with more details I wouldn't have access to old copies of the Daily Student and wouldn't feel confident adding a source to the article that I haven't read myself. Maybe someone here with better access to old newspapers from Indiana can keep an eye on that talk page and help out? Huon (talk) 23:07, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

New bot to remove completed infobox requests

Hello! I have recently created a bot to remove completed infobox requests and am sending this message to WikiProject Indiana since the project currently has a backlogged infobox request category. Details about the task can be found at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/PearBOT 2, but in short it removes all infobox requests from articles with an infobox, once a week. To sign up, reply with {{ping|Trialpears}} and tell me if any special considerations are required for the Wikiproject. For example: if only a specific infobox should be detected, such as {{infobox journal}} for WikiProject Academic Journals; or if an irregularly named infobox such as {{starbox begin}} should be detected. Would some members of this WikiProject mind taking a look at this. The article has recently been expanded quite a bit by a fairly new editor. I think this editor means well, but some of the recent additions seem to be moving too far into WP:LOCAL and WP:NOTEVERYTHING territory. I could be reading too much into this and perhaps others might feel differently which is why I'm asking about it here. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

If by "independent" you mean ... not from Notre Dame, seems like Hecking is mentioned a few times in Swimming Magazine's reports on ND swimming results.
