There were two teams the Bellingham Bulls and Squamish Cougars that had very good sites but now they do not exist. I do not know why. Does anyone have any idea why their sites were deleted. John R G 19:46, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

I'd go back and go over the AfD archives. At a guess, though, given the fly-by-night nature of the WHA "Super Junior League" last season, some editors might have argued that any new teams or leagues the WHA crew likewise fail to pass any notability bar. I'd have voted that way myself. RGTraynor 23:26, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Personally, I disagree. Fly-by-night or not, they are teams roughtly at the Jr A level (or at least has hopes of being such). IMO, that is notable enough for inclusion. Speaking of which, looks like the Squamish article is back. According to the deletion log, the Bellingham article was speedily deleted using criteria A7 - the notability of the subject was not established. Based on the deletion description, I would suggest the admin deleted the article simply for being a stub. Cant say I really agree with that, but if I cared enough to do something about it, I would go and create a better article. Resolute 03:10, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

{{Canada-icehockey-bio-stub}} splitting/categorisation

This stub type is very large, and what's more, permanent categorisation of the articles seems to be very low, too. In particular, the categories by position, Category:Canadian_ice_hockey_defencemen, Category:Canadian_ice_hockey_wingers and Category:Canadian_ice_hockey_centres, which would be the most natural axis the stubs on, seem to see very little use. If these were added (either incrementally or en masse) to these 1500ish articles, that would be very useful. Alai 12:21, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

Personally, I think that makes no difference to a person's personal biography. Instead It should go by country. For example: Canadian, American, Scandanavian, European, Asian. Griffin Murphy 21:44, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Hap Holmes or Harry Holmes?

It recently came to my attention that there are two pages for the same award. Both Harry Holmes Memorial Award and Hap Holmes Memorial Award are the same award but with two different names as you can see. I'm pretty sure its the Hap Holms award. I was think we should transfer over the table from Harry (with some adjustments) and then delete Harry. Watcha think? --Schmackity 18:27, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

I'd say do everything you suggested, except make Harry a redirect to Hap instead of deleting it. NeoChaosX [talk | contribs] 18:51, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
yes, i agree, merge and change to a redirect. Masterhatch 19:59, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
  • The correct name should be Hap Holmes Memorial Award. Also, the names should be in a list format, not a table format. Data needs to be merged into the Hap Holmes Memorial Award article. Flibirigit 18:54, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
  • I'm working on this right now. 4:25PM EST, October 3, 2006. Flibirigit 20:25, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
    • Merge completed. Flibirigit 20:46, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Questions

  1. Who won the award in 2006?
  2. Should the seasons/years be listed as 2005-06, etc.?
  3. Are there "AHL season articles " that we could wikilink the seasons/years to?

Flibirigit 20:46, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

  • The answer the first question is Dany Sabourin according to [1]. Patken4 21:48, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
    • Updated 2005-06 winner. Thanks. Flibirigit 22:07, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Delete Harry?

I've gone through and changed all mentions of Harry Holmes Memorial Award to Hap Holmes Memorial Award. I think we can go ahead and delete Harry. --Schmackity 02:28, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Leaving it as a redirect is best. It will prevent having two articles created again. Flibirigit 02:34, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

OHL Teams featured on The Colbert Report

Tonight the Saginaw Spirit and Sudbury Wolves were featured on a section of the Colbert Report show. I just caught the very end of it, but if you're in a different time zone, or have time-shifting on your tv, you may want to tune in. I just thought it was interesting... ColtsScore 05:12, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

The 67's were also mentioned (including mentioning 67's leading scorer Jamie McGinn), and he posted a score between Windsor and Saginaw (and showed the West division standings). -- Earl Andrew - talk 07:13, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
Why would he show OHL scores on the show? Can someone explain? DMighton 12:39, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
I'm not sure about this instance, but about a month ago, he featured the Saginaw Spirit, saying that they were getting a new mascot and it should be him (it was part of his campaign to get a bridge in Hungary named after him). -- Scorpion0422 12:53, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
He only showed one score, and you'd have to watch the clip [2] -- Earl Andrew - talk 04:14, 14 October 2006 (UTC)
No, he mentioned them again in latter shows. The Saginaw Spirt named their mascot after him, so they mentions them often now. Kevlar67 13:45, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
LOL, now he wants everybody to e-mail and taunt the Owen Sound Attack. DMighton 18:43, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

NHL.com profiles

I don't know if any of you noticed, but NHL.com changed its layout. Player profiles that would once be:

http://www.nhl.com/players/#######.html

are now

http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=#######

For example, Hasek's old page and new page, respectively:

http://www.nhl.com/players/8447687.html
http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8447687

The old pages are not being updated, so it looks like we may have to change the links in player biographies. --Wafulz 21:33, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

NHL Draft Busts and Steals

I see that these got deleted months ago... sadly, I wasn't there to defend them as they were torn apart.

So, since these got deleted, should I put these back up or should I not even bother about this. Hossmann 15:04, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

You could try, but since consensus was strong against such lists (and in all sports, for that matter), I wouldn't wager a lot on them surviving another AfD discussion, especially since there are editors who naturally incline to vote Delete on most such recreations. Idea - NHL arenas

I think it would be a good idea to have a list of the NHL's current arenas listed by capacity and / or a list of NHL team listed by attendence. Thoughts? Kevlar67 13:35, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

Capacity is already included on the National Hockey League article. I suppose, though, that annual attendance (and percent capacity) could be included on the season pages. You would have to be careful of changing capacities though. ie: Both the Pengrowth Saddledome and Rexall Place changed capacities in 1994-95 NHL season due to renovations, and in the case of Calgary, a sellout pre-2005-06 was 17,149 while it has been 19,289 since, as some closed sections of the 300 level was reopened. Trying to delete Saginaw Spirit player profiles

Can anybody that knows how to go about and stop a deletion from happening please help me by stopping wikipedia from deleting all of the Saginaw Spirit player profiles... I have spent alot of time creating and keeping the articles up-to-date, and now they want to delete all of my work... Thank You kivpit

I appreciate the amount of work, unfortunately junior hockey players are not considered encyclopedic or "wikiworthy" until they become professional, have accomplished a notable feat, or considered a top prospect. Flibirigit 03:24, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
Agreed. This so far appears to be a fairly well established precident across most sports. I would probably just fight for the articles of any player who has accomplished something of greater note, ie played for a national team at the World Juniors might be a fight worth fighting in AfD. Resolute 05:49, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
One thing I will add, Kivpit, is that blanking AfD tags wont help your case. If you feel the players are notable, place a keep vote at the AfD page for these articles, and explain why you believe they are notable (a simple vote will simply be discounted by the closing admin). On that page, I proposed the idea of merging all of the player articles into one catch all: Saginaw Spirit roster. You could perhaps add a brief bio of each player on that one article, with this years stats. It is a thought that might help you save much of your work. Resolute 06:09, 29 October 2006 (UTC)
Agreed, and I've just gone over to the AfD debate to put in my oar. Third-line forwards on a junior team aren't remotely noteworthy, and will on form never, ever make the pros. RGTraynor 06:17, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Rosters

I know rosters are a pain and and Dick, Harry or Joe can edit them incorrectly to whatever they want. An idea I have to solve this is to also list key prospects and minor league players in a table beneath. This will prevent people from deleting players and screwing around with rosters and such. In some ways this idea isn't great, but with some refining it should work. If not, how about a seperate page for the rosters? Thricecube 21:54, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Minor rant: Rosters on the professional teams are handy for links to player articles. On junior teams, rosters entice articles to be written about non-notable players. Flibirigit 23:02, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
True, good point Flibirigit, and we have a enough articles as it is of non-notable, non-NHL players. Croat Canuck Go Leafs Go 03:01, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
There's no way to stop frequent changes made to NHL rosters. On the bright side, they do encourage more users to contribute to their favourite team or player (Yes, I spell the Canadian way.) We can grin and bear it, and be vigilant for publicizing notability standards. Flibirigit 05:53, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

User:GM11

As I expect many of you are aware, User:GM11 often edits hockey articles, and his edits frequently introduce POV, occasionally introduce errors, and are almost uniformly unencyclopedic. There are numerous messages on his talk page advising him about Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, and he appears to either not read them or ignore them. I'm not altogether sure about how to deal with somebody who is probably editing in good faith (at the very least, there's no evidence he is trying to damage Wikipedia) and who occasionally adds something worthwhile, but whose edits are basically always detrimental and need to be reverted. Thoughts? Croctotheface 22:20, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm looking at his edits, and his writing style and pro-Canadian POV is awfully similar to POV pusher 24.79.60.31 (talk · contribs), whose last edit was on September 10. GM11's first edit was on September 11. Is this enough to justify running a check user on him? NeoChaosX (he shoots, he scores!) 22:46, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
I've reverted numerous edits by GM11 in the Los Angeles Kings article. He adds POV and unsubstantiated material. He has added a few minor items that are worth keeping, but other than that, GM11 has been a nuisance, IMHO. Gmatsuda 03:31, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
My main issues with GM11 are that, first, even when he adds relevant information, he seems to go out of his way to use nicknames and incorrect style, so those edits are not usable without major cleanup. Second, he does not acknowledge what people write on his talk page. He's been exhorted numerous times to tweak his editing style, and he has not. At the very least, it appears that cooperation and consensus building are not really his priorities. Croctotheface 04:03, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Agreed. He uses slang, nicknames, adds quotes and other information without citations and a lot more that just don't belong. I think from this point, rather than waste my time going over his edits, I'm just going to revert everything he does in one fell swoop unless he adds a substantial amount of usable material. Gmatsuda 04:10, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Oh, I've long been certain that GM11 = 24.79.60.31 (talk · contribs). Reverting or vetting all of his busy edits is just plain exhausting. Is there any way he can be made to listen and answer the numerous exhortations made to his talk page? Along the lines of "you're going to be blocked until and unless you cooperate?" RGTraynor 06:12, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Based on a quick glance at 24.79.60.31's edits, it seems that he was never really guilty of what I'd consider overt vandalism. Even if they're not the same person, GM11, like 24.79.60.31, introduces POV. If 24.79.60.31 could be blocked for this, so could GM11. Perhaps just beginning to add warning templates instead of exhortations would be a start. Croctotheface 20:53, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Oh, I agree that neither seem to have acted out of malicious intent to trash the site ... but the end result is the same. Too many editors have spent too much time cleaning up afterwards, and I honestly can't recall a single vandal to the hockey pages over the last couple years who's wreaked quite so much wreckage. RGTraynor 22:08, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
This user is still giving me headaches! Is there anything we can do? --Schmackity 19:14, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
I vote for leaving warning messages on his page when you revert anything that's especially NPOV or nonsensical. Much as the IP user never engaged in blatant ant overt vandalism, but was blocked at some point anyway, I hope that calling attention to his edits in this manner will have some kind of effect. Croctotheface 22:19, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
GM11 was at it again on the LA Kings page. Not as bad as before, but he still had some POV. Gmatsuda 08:36, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Current roster flags

The flags for Mike Knuble and Petr Nedved on the Philadelphia Flyers page are often switched between the countries they were born in and the countries they represent internationally or currently hail from (Nedved defected to Canada in the early 1990s and Knuble's parents were Latvian-Americans). Which flags should be used? I've always assumed it was the latter, but clarification to end the back-and-forth editing of the current roster flags would be nice. --Sparkhurst 06:16, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Minor Hockey Edits

I took the liberty of reverting mass edits by one 72.141.200.172, who was putting in articles about Canadian superstars, as much as a couple paragraphs each on their minor hockey careers, as well as some minor POV in some of them. It looked like he/she did a lot of work, however I figured it was non-notable, and so i got rid of it. When it comes to hockey though, should the biography start at junior/college, or can it go earlier? What are we considering notable here? Croat Canuck Go Leafs Go 07:10, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

I think it would depend on what they do. Wayne Gretzky's minor hockey career was ridiculous, and should be mentioned. For most players, I think a mention of where they played their minor hockey would suffice. Resolute 07:22, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, I have no problem with it listing where they played minor hockey... but I don't think it should be extremely in depth. DMighton 07:28, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Short of the minor career of a Gretzky -- so celebrated that his first Hockey News reference was in 1972, for pity's sake (I still have the issue) -- I can't imagine it's worth mentioning at all. To be honest, I don't even think that junior/college careers are notable other than (a) a mere mention of significant teams and (b) notable achievements, such as leading a team to the Memorial Cup, scoring leadership or records, or All-Star/major award recognition. Let's take Brendan Shanahan, for instance. His junior team had a losing record both seasons he was there and his scoring feats were unexceptional by OHL standards. Other than mentioning he played for the London Knights (which his article does), that's all that's needful. RGTraynor 09:40, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Well and see that's what i think... so he grew up playing in Orangeville or Wellesley or wherever, it only seems that the only point of that is to try and make the town itself seem more notable... in that case than it should be listed in the town article itself not in the player article. Because he was going into depth over these players pre-junior/college days, and it just seemed it distracted from the overall article. Croat Canuck Go Leafs Go 17:00, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
I just spent a bit of time poking through the edits of 72.141.200.172 (talk · contribs). It is not like he is adding much more than a few sentences to articles. Some examples are: [3], [4], [5]. These are clearly good faith edits. I feel the examples I listed are concise enough that they make the articles better. I did see a few edits that weren't as good. But the issues were common for new users and even some established users (odd formatting, a bit lengthy, a few spelling mistakes, etc.) I think this users edits should be addressed one-by-one, with discussion. Leave the edits that add value. Fix the ones that have some issues. Enter into some discussion with the user and/or the article talk page regarding the ones that you feel need to be deleted. This looks like a user that could easily become a valued participant to the ice hockey project. -- JamesTeterenko 17:09, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
As an example for what I think we should be doing with these edits, see what I did with the Cory Stillman article here. I removed some of the redundant information and it flows a bit better. As with all articles, it could use some additional improvement.-- JamesTeterenko 17:57, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Practically all our player bio articles could be improved too, and there is probably some vandalism in them that is months old that has yet to be reverted, due to the sheer number of them. I've been on this soap box for a long time, and overall I'm just a little weary of IP users making edits on the player articles, because one thing leads to another and then the overall article suffers greatly in every facet. Croat Canuck Go Leafs Go 20:52, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
I admit the syndrome is one of those which has me four-square in the movement to require registration (backed by valid e-mail addresses) as a prerequisite to editing articles. I'm already reviewing most hockey edits by IP addresses, on the sheer expectation they're not going to be good edits. RGTraynor 23:03, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Individual team season articles

I've been working on a format for a season article for an individual team. It was an idea I had, but put off as I was unsure of the notability of it. However, given that many other people are doing season pages for teams (Category:Current sports events), I decided to go ahead with it. I've been working on a format on my sandbox. Ideally, I would like to see a standard format adopted for all teams, in case people wish to do this for all teams. If there is support for such a thing, I can easily move my template to project namespace for the wider community to refine. Any comments are welcome. Resolute 04:55, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Just as a warning to all project members, but keep your eye on the article about Rory Fitzpatrick. As described on AN/I, some jokers on HFBoard are running a campaign get him voted into the All-Star game, and they've been spamming his article with mentions of the campaign and links to it's website. Keep your eyes out on this one, as well as any other related pages (such as National Hockey League All-Star Game, where I got rid of similar spam yesterday). NeoChaosX (he shoots, he scores!) 23:34, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Its actually not just HFboards, but at least a half dozen forums, with it being mentioned on who knows how many others. Given the level of zeal, I suspect that there will be reliable sources to justify a mention sooner rather than later, as the campaign has already been mentioned on radio in Edmonton and Vancouver. For the most part, the posters at HFboards are accepting that mainstream media mention has to come first. There is just a couple who insist on adding the link sooner rather than later. Edit conflict on Chris Pronger

I'm looking for some opinions on what is begging to be an edit war between myself and User:The_strokes. Rather than letting a trivial conflict escelate, I am hoping the community will decide. Basically, Chris Pronger has been described in the media as "public enemy #1 in Edmonton". The_strokes has decided that this now qualifies as a nickname, and has been editing the infobox to add it. I've moved it to the main article, as it is not a nickname, IMO, but did add a mention of this in the main article as a description of how Oiler fans and media feel about Pronger following his trade request. Where would this opinion be better suited? Thanks. Resolute 23:59, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
