Margaret Cavanaugh[edit]

I believe that the row on "Margaret Cavanaugh" may be incorrect. The section states that she had "Programmed Argonne's first scientific computer. (It had about 2 kilobytes of memory)!" Argonne's first scientific computer was the AVIDAC[1][a], and it had around 5 kb of memory instead of the 2kb that the row purports.[2]

In addition to the minor error, I am convinced that "Margaret Cavanaugh" is instead Margaret Butler. The AVIDAC was built by Argonne's physics division and began running on January 28th, 1953[1][a]. However, in a quarterly report by that exact same physics division in the exact same year, no mention of one "Cavanaugh" can be found[4]. On the contrary, Butler's name shows up on the section "Subroutine Library for the Avidac". In addition to this, multiple articles, mentions Margaret's contributions to both the AVIDAC and support for women in her workplace and within science in General[5][6][7]

If this is indeed the case, then there is already an article on Margaret Butler.

[a] I specifically chose this as a source because it is one of the only sources that I could find that not only directly states that it was the first by Argonne, but also mentions when it began running. Other sources describe the AVIDAC being the earliest in the nation, and it is was also a direct source from Argonne themselves. It was also used as a source on the AVIDAC wikipedia page. fourth source should instead be third. Sorry for the mistake. Camcam1016 (talk) 05:30, 15 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
