Mergers

King's Lynn

Merged

Essex

Thomas888b does not mind if it gets merged as it will increase the scope. This Project has been merged.

Cambridge

  • Merge As with King's Lynn this WikiProject has a small scope and is in-active therefore should be merged into East Anglia to keep Cambridge pages maintained by a more local project other than WikiProject England. Wilbysuffolk Talk to me 16:15, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
  • Merge I agree wholeheartedly with this. Let's merge asap. --Chris Jefferies (talk) 22:34, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
  • MergeYeah, I agree too. Rcsprinter (talk) 18:44, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
  • Oppose quite strongly. Category:University of Cambridge and its subcategories alone presently contain 9,459 articles; these will utterly swamp this project. (For comparison, every subcategory of Category:Norfolk and Category:Suffolk combined, including all the Norwich City and Ipswich Town biographies, every UEA alumnus, and so on, comes to a total of 6,754 articles). Left unsigned by: Iridescent (Talk)
That's all covered by University of Cambridge Wikiproject not WikiProject Cambridge. Wilbysuffolk Talk to me 09:27, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

Archiving

Does anybody mind if I set up archiving on this talk page? -- Thomas888b (Say Hi) 09:25, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Nope, it's fine. Wilbysuffolk Talk to me 09:25, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

Discussions from merged projects

Hi, I just wandered across here. Can I ask that any talk pages (and their archives) from any merged projects get archived into this project's talk page archives, just so they don't get lost. It's good to keep track of these things. Anyway, I wish you luck with this project! Cheers, Zangar (talk) 00:52, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Want to advertise your WikiProject?

I have started making a Wikipedia page purely to advertise GOOD and ACTIVE WikiProject some users may find interesting. It's hard for new users to find a good WikiProject. That's why I'm starting this project, to help new users find WikiProjects that are interesting and can give them a few simple jobs. I've selected this WikiProject as one of the few I initially want to see advertised on this very special page. This will bring in a lot of new members to your WikiProject, so make sure you are ready! To get started, all you need is a statement, userbox or any form of advert-so leave a message on my talk page and I'll see what I can do! RDN1F (talk) 19:07, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Page names of task forces use lc Wikiproject instead of uc WikiProject East Anglia

FYI-you may want to move the Wikipedia:Wikiproject East Anglia/Task forces/Essex and Wikipedia:Wikiproject East Anglia/Task forces/Suffolk pages and their subpages, to be under the current project name, instead of redirects, using the upper case "WikiProject East Anglia", instead of "Wikiproject ...", as it currently is. --Funandtrvl (talk) 23:54, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Articles that need to be tagged with Essex=yes

There are two old, redirected templates from before WP Essex became a TF: 1) Template:WP Essex, which has 101 transclusions; and Template:WikiProject Essex, which has 1,300+ transclusions. The talk pages tagged with those two redirects are not showing up in the Essex related articles categories, because they need to be tagged with {{WikiProject East Anglia|Essex=yes}}. It was suggested at the Template talk:WPBM page that User:DodoBot may be able to help perform the mass re-tagging. Does anyone have any objections to this, or a better way to do this?

Secondly, the Suffolk TF only has importance based categories, the quality categories have not been turned on in the WikiProject East Anglia template. Is this on purpose, or should the quality cats be created? Thanks, --Funandtrvl (talk) 17:27, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
Yes, That is a problem I will try and get help to fix this. Thanks for telling me! Wilbysuffolk Talk to me 20:21, 16 July 2011 (UTC)

Rating

Broomfield Hospital has been tagged as a high-priority article for this group. These ratings are sometimes set incorrectly by people outside the project, so I thought I'd drop you a note so someone can double-check it. WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:43, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

Project Guidelines

The project guidelines currently states "Each article which falls under WikiProject East Anglia should be in a category, include some history and not be rated stub class". Would someone explain this please. I would contend that even stub-class articles, that otherwise are in scope, should be included within the project. I note in passing that the automated statistics currently show 952 stub-class articles within the project --Senra (talk) 13:25, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

I've removed that. I don't know who added it but it doesn't need to be there. If we have a stub class category, we might as well put the stubs in it. Rcsprinter (articulate) 15:34, 20 December 2011 (UTC)

Talk page archiving. Seven days is too short

For a project with only 28 declared members and a newsletter three times per year I think archiving this talk page every seven days is too short. An archive every 90 days seems more realistic to me. I have changed this --Senra (talk) 10:28, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

OK, thanks. Rcsprinter (speak) 15:21, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
Advice required on rating East Cambridgeshire articles

I would like help from the project rating the |importance= parameter for some East Cambridgeshire articles. This will give me confidence to continue the process. Some examples in no particular order (all need checking, tick with {{done-t}} when checked) ...

--Senra (Talk) 23:30, 19 December 2011 (UTC)

I've reviewed these for you. They were all fine apart from Ely and Littleport riots 1816, which I upgraded to mid importance, and Isle of Ely, which I did the same to. Sorry for the wait. Rcsprinter (state) 12:34, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

WikiWomen's History Month

Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:East Anglia will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in East Anglia's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to seeing events take place! SarahStierch (talk) 22:01, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Hunstanton

I just had a look at the article on the Norfolk settlement of Hunstanton. Seeing its talk page, I see that it is currently (as of February 2012) under the auspices of Wikipedia:WikiProject Geography but not under the eyes of your wikiproject - at least not yet. Do you wish to change this? After all, it seems to me to be a shame to leave the article under a very wide-ranging wikiproject group only! ACEOREVIVED (talk) 21:12, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Of course, if you feel it should be added, you can just add the banner yourself! I've done it this time. Rcsprinter (natter) 16:23, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

confusing redirect from Belstead House

Belstead House redirects to Anglia Ruskin University (I think because Belstead House was listed as a Partner Organisation of ARU). However on 21st Jan 2012 stevesmates removed the section on partners, but left the redirect. Belstead House is an adult residential education centre near Ipswich - see http://www.belsteadhouse.co.uk/ and probably rates its own page.

I've no idea how to sort this out, but maybe someone reading this does.

Scope

Why does this wikiproject cover Essex because Essex is rarely considered part of East Anglia and when it is only the northern parts are considered part of the area. Also East Anglia is named after one of the seven kingdoms of the Heptarchy and so is Essex but Essex was a seperate kingdom. Also Southern Linoclnshire (according to the Redcliffe–Maud Report and I think is only in there so the whole of the fens is in the area) and the whole of the East of England (which ignorant people often confuse with East Anglia) are sometimes included in the definition of East Anglia. Eopsid (talk) 16:24, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

There was a separate WikiProject Essex but that was merged into East Anglia when this project was created. I would point you to Wilbysuffolk who started Wikiproject East Anglia and conducted the merge. Rcsprinter (natter) 19:38, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject East Anglia or WikiProject East of England

I'm proposing to rename WikiProject East Anglia to WikiProject East of England due to the current discussions here. It will merge with Wikipedia:WikiProject Bedfordshire and Wikipedia:WikiProject Hertfordshire and inculded the locations shown in the map shown.

The new WikiProject East of England area.

I will manage the merger and creation of this WikiProject if enough support shown, I do not support this merger but as the creator of WikiProject East Anglia It would be best for me to carry this out if enough people support it. Wilbysuffolk (Talk to me!) 20:53, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Works for me. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:03, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
Disagree Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex (which is currently part of WikiProject: East Anglia) are more often thought of as part of South East England and as Home Counties (due to their proximity to the capital) rather than the East of England (which is often confused with the East Anglia and is stereotyped as very rural and flat). I think these three are only included in the recently created (I consider anything that happened within my lifetime to be recent) region of the East of England so the regions dont have too large size differences.
However I would support a merger if all these WikiProjects are almost inactive.
Also you could rename the project and have WikiProject Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire remain as sub-projects like how WikiProject Coventry is to WikiProject West Midlands Eopsid (talk) 23:10, 27 June 2012 (UTC)
As a member of WikiProject Hertfordshire, I wouldn't like to see it merged with another, as I have no interest in the other counties and would have to read a lot more unrelated discussion. However, if you still decide to rename this project, I would prefer Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire to remain as sub-projects, as Eopsid describes. Then I wouldn't have to leave WP Herts and join WP East of England. –anemoneprojectors– 13:41, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
Naturally this would be the case, I do agree with you but there has been a lot of problems with people from Essex not wanting to be part of East Anglia though most of it is part of East Anglia (Southern bit being not though it would be too difficult to separate Essex in to two). Wilbysuffolk (Talk to me!) 17:45, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
In principle I'm fine with this: the more active a project the better. I'm also not particularly bothered about whether or not there is a Hertfordshire task force, as surely the whole point of merging is to create a more active project talk page?

However, merger or no merger, I'm only really interested in Hertfordshire, and in particular I make regular use of Category:Hertfordshire and its subcategories. When I'm not focussing on football, browsing through those categories directly affects my editing habits. So for me, a merger would only be acceptable if the existing Hertfordshire categories were kept intact. —WFC— 20:59, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Something like this should not affect categorisation of articles in any way. –anemoneprojectors– 16:35, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

I have nominated University of Cambridge as a good article. Since it falls within the scope of your project and was classified top-importance, I thought you may be able to help or want to take part in the process. Thanks, --Mark91it's my world 12:22, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Please help get East Anglia ready for the start of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition on 1st September

This September the UK is taking part for the first time in the international photography competition Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants will be invited to submit pictures of listed buildings of significant importance (grades I or grade II*), as recorded by English Heritage. The main external website for competitors can be found here, and you can leave a message there if you have queries about competing. Do please join in, and let people in your local area know of this excellent way in which both existing and new Wiki users can help improve the encyclopaedia by contributing photographs of local listed structures. What about organizing a local Wikimeet to attract new people?

In preparation for the start of the competition on 1st September there is still quite a lot of work to do, and we would like to ask for the help of members of this wikiproject. Your local and expert knowledge will be invaluable in ensuring that the lists of eligible buildings are up to date and correctly formatted. If you look at Listed buildings in the United Kingdom you will see how many structures are included. If you then follow the link to Listed buildings in England, you can get to the detailed lists for your area. Alternatively have a look at the WLM planning table. Can you help to ensure that the lists for your area are up to date and well presented?

Some of the lists have been semi-automatically generated from data provided by English Heritage. These use pre formatted templates (eg EH header) which will make it much easier for competition participants to upload their photographs to Commons as an automated process. Please don't change the template structure, as we need to ensure that the templates are properly compatible with the WLM standards that are in use worldwide. The format will allow a bot automatically to collect the information and to put it into the international Monuments Database.

The data still needs the attention of local editors:

  • The "title" may need wikilinking to a suitable article name (whether we currently have that article or not). If there are several buildings in one street all of the wikilinks point at an article about the street; however each entry has a separate line in the list.
  • The "location" column looks and sorts better if just the parish or town is included (& wikilinked).
  • The "date completed" column sometimes has eg "C19" for 19th century, and "C1850" for c. 1850 when the date is uncertain - these need to be corrected manually.
  • The "grid ref & lat & long" (which is occasionally missing) may be given to 8 characters — only 6 (grid ref) or 5 (lat & long) are really needed.
  • Clicking on the "list entry number" should take you to the data sheet for that entry on the English Heritage database which can be checked if needed for details.
  • The image column should have a picture added if we already have a suitable image on Commons. (N.B. if you are going to be taking photos yourself for inclusion in the competition don't upload them until September)
  • References may be added according to normal WP practice.

For further information, please see Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 in the United Kingdom.

If you have any queries, please post them not below but on the Organizers' help page on Commons.

Anything you can do to help improve these lists will be much appreciated. The final deadline for cleaning up is 31st August.

Intu Lakeside is in Thurrock.

Thurrock is a has Unitary status and is not in Essex. The address of Intu Lakeside should end Thurrock, not Thurrock, Essex. It is a common mistake and should be rectified. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JamesPaulBond (talkcontribs) 10:12, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

The article for Thurrock says, "Thurrock is a unitary authority with borough status in the English ceremonial county of Essex", so it is in Essex. –anemoneprojectors– 17:25, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

Request for a photograph

Not sure this is the best place to ask, but I'm looking for a Wikipedian in Cambridge who would be willing to take and release a photograph of this plaque, dedicated to physicist Brian Josephson for his discovery of the Josephson effect in 1962, for which he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. The plaque is on the Mond Building in central Cambridge, which is pinpointed on this map.

I'm currently trying to improve our bio on Josephson, and this would be an interesting addition to it. Many thanks in advance to anyone willing to consider it. SlimVirgin (talk) 17:33, 27 December 2013 (UTC)

I hope this project is still active. I've created a disambiguation page for Clare Hall but I am stuck with what to do with some of the links. It appears Clare Hall applies both to the old and new Clare Hall colleges in Cambridge but I don't know what to do for fear of getting the links wrong. Any help? Simply south...... cooking letters for just 7 years 18:40, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Ah, if only the content that links the BLPs to Clare Hall was cited. Then it would be easy to check the citation to work out whether Clare Hall or Clare College was the right link. I'll try and do some but it might take some research for those uncited ones. QuiteUnusual (talk) 16:44, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I did start but maybe someone can check my contributions to see if they were correct? Here, here, here and here. Mersea articles

I was improving Mersea Island, which I now visit on a regular basis, and noticed there were quite a few sub-articles which broadly duplicate the main one - West Mersea, East Mersea and The Strood. I think most of these might be better off serving as redirects to the main article that amalgamates the information, but I'm happy to listen to objections. What does anyone else think? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:11, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

Agree except, perhaps, West Mersea, as it has independent notability to a much greater extent. Wouldn't oppose a merge though. QuiteUnusual (talk) 08:56, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Pillar of Salt, Bury St Edmunds

While in Bury St Edmunds recently I asked three different locals about this sign. None had heard the name "Pillar of Salt"! But one, the helpful guide at the Cathedral, popped up the road and asked the expert at the tourist office, who said that when the concrete pillar was first built it developed salt-like crystals (I forget the scientific term), and that's where the name came from. I can't find anything about this by Googling, but has anyone got a WP:RS, perhaps a guidebook to Bury, with which we could add this explanation? PamD 21:33, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Related changes

Can the project have a related changes page as there is for Wikipedia:WikiProject Yorkshire/WatchAll? Sheringham Little Theatre

Sheringham Little Theatre is an article that's getting little attention from regular users. A host of ever changing IPs that seem to be used by people connected with the theater are frequently adding in advertising/POV language to the article to promote the theater. Over the last 6 or so months I've been trying to respond to it and keep it as neutral as possible, but the IPs keep returning to change it to their liking. Could I ask that others take a look at it and make it more appropriate/neutral, and that you further watchlist it to help monitor going forward? Additionally, I've started a section on its talk page to discuss the youth section that the IPs keep adding in which is primarily just a list of shows the children's theater program has put on. Thank you, only (talk) 14:36, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

@Only: @TransporterMan:. Thanks Only for pointing out this one. I've started to have a go at this travesty and will carry on at my leisure. If this project had a Related changes page (like the ones I use for Lincolnshire and Yorkshire: see comment section below) it would be easier for project members to pick up on poor editing. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

York House, 292 Hills Road, Cambridge

Not sure how active this project is, but I'd much appreciate assistance from any editor located in Cambridge. I'm looking for information on York House. It's currently listed in the List of works by Edwin Lutyens but I'm struggling to find sources that support that claim. The source (reliable?) seems clear that the house was undertaken to his designs. The owner, Ridgeon, was a major builder, so perhaps Lutyens just did drawings? But it isn't listed. That seems implausible, although not impossible. I can't see it in the revised Cambridgeshire Pevsner, although I could have missed it as the entry for Hills Road is quite long. I'm also interested in whether it actually still exists as it was threatened with demolition last year.[2], [3], [4] It's still standing on Google Earth - CB20QG - but I don't know when that was taken. Any information gratefully received. KJP1 (talk) 11:30, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Barnstar

Anyone think we should make a barnstar, I mean, Bedfordshire has one, and they don't even exist anymore (as a wikiproject), any thoughts? Erik Sergeant (talk) 10:04, 13 May 2022 (UTC)

On the project page, should essex be coloured too? Erik Sergeant (talk) 09:48, 19 May 2022 (UTC)

Star

Just to mention this again, are there any objections to us having a barnstar? I'd be more than happy to make us one Erik Sergeant (talk) 10:37, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

Depends whether you think there is anybody around on this project to be awarding one to each other. Rcsprinter123 (witter) 11:10, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
That was my thought, hence why I ask, still, I'm here, and I'm sure other quiet people are about the place. (To be completely honest, I'd quite like to have a go at making one, so I think I'll make one anyway, and we can use if we ever need to) Erik Sergeant (talk) 12:53, 27 May 2022 (UTC)
Besides some users have been diligently working their way through 1200+ unimportanced articles.
Anyone else who's working on that with me, do Make Yourself Known To Me, perhaps you can join mte in trying to make all of our stub to starts, don't worry, it'll only about 45 years, I estimate...

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Fear this project may be inactive, but worth a try. We are sorely in need of some images of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Harlow, in particular of the interior stained glass. Any help with this from Essex-based editors would be greatly appreciated. KJP1 (talk) 09:13, 19 August 2023 (UTC)

Basildon Crown Court

Hi - It would be great if someone could take a photo of Basildon Crown Court and upload it to wikimedia commons. Many thanks, Dormskirk (talk) 12:53, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
