Posture dance?

I'm doing some research for a possible Posture dance article, with some sources collected at User talk:RoySmith/Posture dance. Ignoring the (many) search results which are about improving your posture through dance, I'm left with almost all the references to posture dance being related to haka. So much so that I suspect I'm looking at internet amplification effect, where everybody who writes anything about haka finds our article and parrots what it says.

So, is posture dance a real term, describing a generic style of dance? I found a couple of sources[1][2][3][4], but not enough to base an article on. -- RoySmith (talk) 16:50, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

  • Your We Japanese book with "The Odori is a posture dance, with slow movements of the body, feet, arms, and hands. The dancers employ fans, sprays of blossoms, baskets of flowers, flags and other accessories according to the story the dancers endeavor to interpret." clearly implies that PD is a thing, and not a synonym for haka.
  • "A Posture Dance on Stage (Maiko)" from Museum of Fine Arts Boston confirms that this is a phrase in use by knowledgeable art critics, that can be applied to e.g. Japanese dance.
  • So in a very different context does Teaching Dance as Art in Education "Step 3—Compose it. Start to work on a short posture dance using the three motifs. The intent is to take pedestrian postures and stylize and abstract them to get raw material for a dance. ... The postures can be inspired by any number of everyday events... Make clear that the intent is to explore postural shapes in relation to each other."
  • Bounty Chords: Music, Dance and Cultural Heritage on Norfolk and Pitcairn Islands "The costume displayed in the photograph reflects ... the style of dance being presented, identified in the original PIM photo-caption as 'an Ellice Islands posture dance 'fa'atele'."
  • A Posture Dance by Women (illus. from Games and Pastimes of the Maori)
  • and indeed Haka is frequently described as a "vigorous posture dance", etc. Chiswick Chap (talk) 19:48, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

AFAIKT, "posture dance" is a term coined by relatively few authors, which denotes a type of dance in which performers assume various static poses in the course of dance movements. I've been unable to find evidence that the term is either formally defined or widely accepted. Lambtron talk 19:57, 20 October 2018 (UTC)
The examples I've given above include major museums from different continents, and span many decades. Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:03, 20 October 2018 (UTC)
All of the sources appear to be using "posture dance" as an adjective, not as a formally defined term. So to answer your question, I would say that the term does indeed describe an essential aspect of some types of dance, but it isn't an "official" name for a dance genre unless some RS explicitly defines it as such. Lambtron talk 04:02, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
"A posture dance on stage" can only be a noun phrase; so is "work on a short posture dance"; so is "an Ellice Islands posture dance". Those cannot imaginably be verbs or adjectives. It's a thing. Chiswick Chap (talk) 09:58, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
Grammar aside, it seems like WP:OR to infer a definition from these usage cases and base an article on that definition. Having said that, I agree that "posture dance" is a good descriptive term for any dance in which performers progress through a sequence of stationary poses. Also, it's obviously an attribute that's shared by many dances, which I suppose makes it "a thing". Lambtron talk 15:32, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
Lambtron, kindly do not cast aspersions or seek to belittle other editors. I'm glad we agree on the fact that posture dance is a thing, long and widely used to name a type of dance. I have neither created an article nor presupposed any definition, so I certainly can't have committed any deadly crime. Clearly an article would require a good secondary source which provided both a definition and an overview. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:12, 21 October 2018 (UTC)

Just found another source, looks like the best one so far. https://archive.org/details/danceman045 (there's a PDF scan at Forgotten Books. They make specific reference to an "Egypitian posture dance", "Pantomime posture dance", "Dramatic posture dance" -- RoySmith (talk) 16:25, 21 October 2018 (UTC)

On pages 29–30, that book has a section "Pantomime and Dramatic Posture Dance", without however defining the terms. Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:32, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
Didn't mean to belittle or criticize; sorry it came across that way. Keep digging; maybe some RS out there defines it. Lambtron talk 16:37, 21 October 2018 (UTC)

Katherine Dunham in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935)?

A referencing request: can someone familiar with the literature in this field dig up a high quality source that says Katherine Dunham was in the live Hollywood Bowl production that preceeded A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935)? Based on my understanding (which is limited, so caveat), it would have been an incidental part (effectively an extra; one among many dancers) and before she attained any kind of fame. I can't quite square this with her biography, and so far I've failed to find any decent sources for it (the sources do mention Butterfly McQueen though, as the "Butterfly" nickname came from the "Butterfly Ballet" here); but as this isn't my field… Can anyone here help? --Xover (talk) 08:10, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

Is it notable? It crops up in a current AfD and has a BBC item as well as its own website, and lots of coverage in local papers around the world on the lines of "local dancer wins medal at DWC" - and an article in a book on marketing. Any thoughts? Is it just a commercial scam, or something about which we should have an article? PamD 11:46, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

It's a real competition and one that has been trying to establish itself as the major global youth dance enterprise (as eclectic all-styles-welcome composite competitions go, anyway). Is it WP:NOTABLE? I don't know--I think it could probably survive an WP:AfD through a WP:GNG rationale without too much trouble, but of course that is a different question than whether I think it should have an article. You could certainly put together a fair number of independent reliable and secondary sources, but most of them would be local pieces celebrating small teams that made it into the event, rather than in-depth coverage of the competition itself as an encyclopedic topic. I can certainly assist in putting together the best of the available sources if you think you might want to author such an article. Snow let's rap 09:40, 19 July 2019 (UTC)

David Bintley

Hi there,

I would like to completely revamp and update David Bintley's page, but am unsure about how to cite my sources. I work for Birmingham Royal Ballet and have worked with David for 18 years. Part of his leaving gift as he stepped down as our Director a couple of weeks ago was a book I complied, some 380 pages, covering his whole career with both Royal Ballet Companies. I would like to include much of this information on his wikipedia page, as well as update and create new entries for all his ballets. My problem is my sources... there isn't that much published information, no book, for example, just reviews and a few interviews, and mostly from the last decade. In the process of compiling my book, I had access to both the Royal Opera House and Birmingham Royal Ballet archives (including every show report from 1978 to 2019), the Royal Ballet School archives, was in touch with the various companies he worked with abroad (i.e. National Ballet of Japan, San Francisco Ballet, Hong Kong Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet etc) and, most importantly, I had access to his wife's diaries from 1980 to 1995 as she worked on the book with me. None of these sources are public or verifiable by anyone not working for one of the Royal Ballet companies, so how can I cite them? I don't want anyone to feel the need to change random details, as I know what I have is correct. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Hello Leea25 and welcome to the project! Thank you for your willingness to help flesh out Mr. Bintley's article. The first thing you will want to do as you begin to undertake this effort is familiarize yourself with some of our more critical community policies with regard to adding content: WP:Verification, WP:Reliable sources (particularly the sections WP:PRIMARY and WP:SECONDARY), and WP:WEIGHT. It's a lot to digest all at once, but given you are throwing yourself into the deep end a little by undertaking such a big augmentation of an existing article, it will save you a lot of time to start by getting a basic understanding of these project standards--if anything is confusing to you as you work your way through, please feel free to ask question here or my talk page.
The first thing you will come to understand as you work through those policies is that your situation is a little bit of sticky one; new users who have access to materials not in the public sphere are sometimes frustrated to learn that we usually cannot use such materials for sources (see WP:PUBLISHED). In this case, your archived materials present an open question, and one which you may want to broach with the WP:reliable sources noticeboard for community discussion as to how whether (and how) you may be able to get some usage out of them here--though I must tell you my initial inclination is that it will be an uphill task to get them accepted if they are not published in the traditional sense. Still, operating from your unique position of having considerable access to the Royal Ballet's administration and archives, there may very well be a way to leverage your resources to provide citations to new insights into Mr. Bintley's career. I take it that the you compiled was merely a memento and a collection of primary sources, rather than your own writing on his career which you intend to publish? If I am mistaken in that and this is a professional research work that might be published, we'd be able to use said book as secondary source in its own right.
On one last note (for now), be sure to sign your posts by adding ~~~~ at the end! :) Snow let's rap 09:15, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
Hi Snow Rise and thanks for the reply. Yes, I am already embroilled in all that... I'm not sure I am going to be able to do much at all as apparently my connection to Mr Bintley constitutes a conflict of interest, so I shouldn't really be editing anything on his page, which is frustrating. I'm in the midst of a long and very interesting discussion with an editor called Nat on another page about the issues. It seems a great shame that the current (and very understandable) policies of Wikipedia effectively prohibit use of what would historically be considered primary sources because they are not in the public domain. As I've been discusing with Nat, my main interest is obscure classical composers, of which there are many thousands. Most of the information about them is hidden away in archives and libraries, or in brief, in long-out-of-print books. Detailed information about them is unlikely to ever make it into print or onto the web. My book, sadly, only exists in 4 copies which belong to me, Birmingham Royal Ballet, David himself and the chair of our board. I'll keep you posted with my progress, but it's not looking hopeful, which is very frustrating! Leea25 (talk) 14:31, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
Hi again Leea25: Yes, I can certainly understand how the situation would be frustrating, but I gather from your comments that Nat has already explained the important purposes that are served by restricting statements to those supported by citations to documents that meet our WP:RS standards. I would like to reiterate to you the recommendation that you take this matter to WP:RSN: if you would like me to format that inquiry for you to improve the odds of the discussion getting off to a useful start, I would be happy to do that. I have given your situation some thought since my initial response, but the truth of the matter is, even though I have long history here, with lots of engagement on the issue of what constitutes a reliable source, your uncommon situation has thwarted my ability to come up with a concrete conclusion as to whether there might be a work-around for you. But RSN is filled with editors who obsess over these matters, and it might be that someone there can figure out how we proceed to make some use of your resources--worst case scenario, you get a definite answer that we can't use these sources in any capacity, and at least then we'd know for sure. As to the conflict of issue matter, I can help with that. As an independent party, I (along with any other editors who may be active on that article) can vet any additions you wish to make to the article for consistency with our policies, and I'm willing to take the time to assist in that capacity, if we can get the sources themselves past the RS hurdle. I'll check in on the talk page discussion later and see if there's anything there which puts additional twists on any of this. Snow let's rap 19:42, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
Hi Snow Rise. Thank you for your advice and offer of time - I really appreciate it. As I said on the other thread, I'm finding this all rather disheartening, partly because I have come to the realisation that Wikipedia is not what I thought it was. I don't mean to sound rude in saying that, but I thought it genuinely was a 'go to' site for information and have always treated it as such, not realising that really, only information found elsewhere should be included. From my point of view as someone very interested in obscure 20th century classical music and dance, that excludes an extraordinary amount of information that will, in all likelihood, never be published in a reliable secondary source. Any way, I'm going on! I think I would like to take the issue to the RS Noticeboard, if you will help me. I've no idea how best to approach the subject other than repeating what I initially wrote here (without all the grumbling about policy!). What would you advise? My only other thought is to write a long piece for the BRB website, persaude them to publish, it and use that as a reference, but it would mean writing an awful lot of information out three times, rather than twice. :) Thanks again Leea25 (talk) 22:15, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay in response Leea25: I have now placed an inquiry at RSN regarding your situation, asking for input as to how to proceed. My suspicion is that it may very well become necessary for you to publish something via the BRB in order to make full use of your resources. Even that might face some detractors as to whether it would satisfy WP:RS, but I think it should not be difficult to get past that bar. Actually, we are fortunate in that most people similarly positioned with primary sources often find they cannot use them at all, whereas your situation and role with the BRB do manage to give us some potential options. But in any event, vetting it with RSN first so as to not have you go through the effort for nothing, is a good idea. It might also be that the editors there will know of a work-around in policy that will allow you to be more directly cite the primary sources in the archive, but I am less hopeful about that--though I foregrounded requests in this vein in the inquiry.
Regarding Wikipedia operating/being a different kind of resource than you previously thought, I can see how it would be frustrated in your particular position, but I think with time, you will come to appreciate why we operate the encyclopedia in this way, and that it has many benefits to reliability in our content. In order to keep fake, misleading, or biased information (and the bias could as easily be negative and positive), we need a standard that operates independent of first hand knowledge of a topic. The RS standard also removes subjective assessment by our individual editors (or groups thereof) from the process of validating statements/content. Not only does this lead to vastly more reliable and neutral content across our articles in the aggregate, it also prevents talk pages from devolving into ceaseless cycles of repetitive arguments about the "truth", from editors asserting their own take on circumstances: by requiring that their argument be based in the WP:WEIGHT of the sources, we pin resolution to a more objective standard, and thus prevent loggerhead arguments that could never be resolved. This is an essential function (and don't worry about being new tot he idea: I think it's actually overlooked by the vast majority of even our longterm editors!) that prevents work on most articles on the project from grinding to a halt on a daily basis. Anyway, with some luck and some time donated by the volunteers at RSN, we should find a path forward to allowing you to translate the content into the article. Snow let's rap 21:43, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks a lot, Snow Rise. I have added a lengthy comment to the thread you started there. Leea25 (talk) 00:07, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
Hi @Snow Rise:. It seems our discussion on the other forum about useful citations has been deleted. Any idea why? I had asked quite a lot of questions in my last post... Thanks a lot! Leea25 (talk) 17:09, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
Hi again Leea25. It would appear that the thread was archived for inactivity by the bot that maintains the page. The archived discussion can be found Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard/Archive_269 if you need to reference it. I'm sorry that I couldn't be more active in the discussion to keep that from happening, but I had to travel extensively this week for a professional obligation. The good news is that the results of that discussion are a lot more positive, in terms of your options, than I anticipated them being. In short, it would seem that despite my initial doubts as to the policy restraints, there's a lot that we can do with your sources, because many are considered "published" for our purposes, insofar as your archives are open to the public. I will confess that I'm not sure how we will format those citations, since I have never cited on-project to informal archives, but we'll find a way to stumble through that together. To begin with, please present any questions you still have to me here (but do me a favour and bullet point them in short paragraphs so I can isolate and respond to the issues better). I will answer those question to the best of my ability. Once that is done, you can begin writing the content you want to add to the article in [[User:Leea25/sandbox|your personal sandbox], which is an area you can use to test out content before we add it to the article in a finished state (I will take the liberty of adding the current version of the Bintley article into it after I finish this message, and you can work on editing a draft version from there. Add citations using our relevant policy on the topic, and I will try to check in every day or so make what edits I can to move things along and provide feedback. Please forgive me if I am slow now and then though: this coming month is likely to quite busy for me. :) Snow let's rap 05:17, 1 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks a lot @Snow Rise:, and again for the offer of help. I was hoping to get the bulk of this done over the last two weeks as I have had a fortnight off work. I'm back at work on Monday, so I'll just have to get things done as I can. Would it be helpful if I tagged you in here once I've had the chance to make some edits, to save you checking? Thanks, Leea25 (talk) 18:22, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
Happy to be of help. :) Yes, you can always ping me here whenever you get around to working on the matter. Or you can leave a message on my talk page or ping me to yours. I'll also add the sandbox to my watchlist for now. As to the timing, don't sweat that--one of our more informal (but more or less universally embraced) principles here is that there is generally WP:NORUSH when it comes to such things. :) Besides, doing it piecemeal will allow you to internalize some of the technicalities of the editing as you go. In any event, let me know if/when/how I can be of assistance! Snow let's rap 19:11, 2 August 2019 (UTC)

At Dance - Assessment; under the "Dance articles by quality and importance" table, I added template for Dance "Cleanup listing". It's generated weekly (usually Tuesday) by CleanupWorklistBot & is helpful to find articles with specific issues. JoeNMLC (talk) 15:56, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

There's a problem with this article: the title is not defined in the lead section, which uses a different term. I'm not familiar with the issues at stake, so I wanted to bring it to this WikiProject's attention so it can be fixed. Thanks! --Albany NY (talk) 04:44, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
