WikiProject Companies To-do:

Here are some tasks awaiting attention:

How about all the various S&P indices? S&P 1500, S&P Global 1200? Then, there are also Fortune lists, do we need those? And what exactly is the purpose of collecting all those lists? Simply establishing the notability of the company? --Gimlei (talk to me) 08:36, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Typically those stock indices have their own articles here on Wikipedia and even company list articles here (e.g. S&P 1500). I'm thinking of this page as more along the lines of editorially compiled lists that are not necessarily otherwise represented on Wikipedia and which add some data-value. For instance, the first list I put on here was a rank list within a narrow sector (sales 2001, industrial materials distribution). One useful thing from this list was that none of the companies in the top 6 were (but now are) tagged with {{WikiProject Companies| class=stub | importance=high }}. A second by-product is that it provides a reference in copyable form for re-use across multiple company articles. Another thing is that it provides a slim handle for someone with a particular interest in this area to grab onto (i.e. helps to define a particular narrow sector). These benefits are added onto the assistance in establishing notability; I recognize that just appearing #1 in a 2001 list of this type does not establish notability, but it helps to do so. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 12:27, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
