Talk:Echo Park, Los Angeles, California

I don't think too many people went to Echo Park because they were priced out of East Hollywood ; rents and housing prices in both neighborhoods have tended to be similar (East Hollywood is probably slightly cheaper than Echo Park right now, as it is only beginning to undergo gentrification). I would not consider East Hollywood to be an upscale neighborhood, either. Many of Echo Park's residents were priced out of Silver Lake and Los Feliz, with quite a few having moved from Venice (which is nowhere near Echo Park) due to high housing prices there. I deleted the references to Mayberry and Alessandro because Mayberry is not a neighborhood in Los Angeles and Alessandro St. is in Silver Lake - it is not a separate area.

Mayberry Street is in northern Silver Lake, the reference was probably to that area.

Well, of course you are wrong about rents, and you exaggerate the numbers coming from Venice (There are probably more Midwesterners moving into Echo Park than those from Venice), and those who actually LIVE in Mayberry would beg to differ with you. Mayberry street is half in South-eastern Silverlake, and half in the Edendale quarter of Echo Park. Also, Allessandro is situated in Echo Park, not Silverlake. The eastern boundry of Silverlake is Waterloo street. This is why yuppies should keep their hands off history and concentrate on something they know, like writing bad scripts and/or bar-hopping....just kidding....ha.

WikiProject maintenance

Since I am no longer doing any maintenance for this WikiProject, it would be nice if one or more members would step up to handle some of the things that I've been doing. One of the tasks that I regularly did was read the weekly Signpost publication's Features and admins page to keep track of any articles, lists or images that have been promoted to Featured status, and also which articles have been downgraded from Featured article status.

For example: the 2007-03-05 issue shows that the List of California birds became a featured list, and the Ridge Route article was de-featured. For the previous week (2007-02-26), Image:DSCN2857pano.small.jpg, a panorama photo of Zabriskie Point in Death Valley, California became a featured photo. Also that week was a mention in the News and notes section that there were a couple of California photos under consideration for the commons:Picture of the Year. Those photos could probably be mentioned in the Featured photos section of the WikiProject.

(One thing that I never found the time for was to go through Commons:Featured pictures to make note of any images related to California, if anyone wants to tackle that task. All of the Pictures of the Year at Commons were also Featured photos. A quick look at the chronological lists shows several Featured photos at commons that have California connections, including Image:Gull portrait ca usa.jpg, Image:USA Lassen NP Kings Creek CA.jpg, Image:Los Angeles Pollution.jpg, Image:Hawk eating prey.jpg, Image:Golden Gate Bridge Yang Ming Line.jpg, and Image:Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird.jpg)

I have been doing this for both the California and the Southern California WikiProjects. It would probably be easiest if the same person continued to do it for both projects. BlankVerse 15:28, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Deficient List

The List of California Counties, which is alphabetical, stops abruptly at Lassen County. No Los Angeles, none of the Sans and Santas... Also, I think most people going to such a list would expect to see at least area and population figures. Lamabillybob 04:32, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Proposed change to this WikiProject's template

See Template talk:WikiProject California#Please use another image. Initially, there was an {{editprotected}} request, because the image currently used is up for deletion on commons; now, however, it appears some people want the image changed regardless of a delete/keep decision on commons. Mentioning this here in the hopes of getting more eyes and ears involved -- do people like the current image? Would they like a different one? My joining and Nancy Reagan

I don't know if this is the correct place to talk about this, but here goes: I'm interested in becoming a part of WikiProject California. I live in Southern California, and happen to know a lot about my state. If someone could please get back to me about how to join, that would be great.

The other point I wanted to bring up is about Former United States First Lady Nancy Reagan. I know that President Ronald Reagan is already apart of WikiProject CA, but is Nancy? If she isn't I would strongly urge someone to add her name to the list, or however you guys do it. Mrs. Reagan moved here in the 1940s, and has lived here ever since (excluding her and her husband's time in D.C.), and she currently lives in Bel-Air, so if she isn't already part of this, I would suggest adding her. Plus, she is a good article, thanks to me.

Request for the Paid Family Leave page

I propose that either: the title of the Paid Family Leave page be changed to a California-Oriented Paid Family Leave or that the page be expanded to include Paid Family Leave legislation currently being pursued in other states (as PFL is no longer solely a Californian issue). I would like to provide some details on Paid Family Leave legislation in New Jersey but I feel that it would be detrimental to the current structure of the article. This photo was taken about 11 years ago in Moscow, Idaho, by a young man named Zach, who just graduated from University of Idaho and soon entered it in a contest hosted by his new employer, Microsoft. The area (evident by the mountains visible at left and right) is clearly not Napa, rather it is called The Palouse - just as suggested in the only article that's cited and which is obviously - if not purposely - ambiguous (ref: "Hmmmm"). Palos Verdes vs. Palo Verde

I'm wondering if these two pages refer to the same place ? If so, one should redirect to the other maybe ? I see a Palos Verdes page and a Palo Verde, California page. --Teraya 22:01, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

They are different places. Palos Verdes refers to the peninsula in the southwest corner of the L.A. area and all of the cities and communities there. Palo Verde, California is one seperate community in Imperial County a few hundred miles from L.A. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 02:03, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Why is Keith Olbermann Part of the Project???

Can I please remove the California Project tag from K.O.'s bio? He wasn't born there, didn't grow up there, doesn't live there now, and has no recognizable association with the state. He is not a California "personality." I guess he worked at KABC for a little while, but does that mean we should tag anyone who ever worked in LA with a Cal. Project tag? Like a number of other WikiProjects, most of our tags were added by an automated Wikipedia bot, specifically User:MetsBot. The articles chosen were based on specific categories. Looking at the categories on the Keith Olbermann article, I assume that MetsBot tagged the article because it is in Category:Los Angeles television anchors. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 04:28, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

So given that (1) this is beyond the stated Scope of the Cal. Project and (2) no one here is actually working on making the KO article part of the project and (3) KO really has a tenuous relationship to CA at best, does any of the handful of you here care if that tag is removed from the KO article? Laura's Law Article Neutrality Disputed

The section about supporters is clearly designed as a hit piece. I've edited much of it, but the focus on one personality within the NAMI organization who does not enjoy their support (http://www.namiscc.org/News/2002/NAMICalifornia.htm) suggests a Scientology hit piece. The section needs a serious and neutral reediting by someone more in key with the issues.

I did an edit on the "support" part, removing everything that was unsubstantiated and fearmongering. Feel free to check my work.

Randy Shilts

Just thought you folks might want to consider adding this article to your project. WikiProject Illinois just did, I presume because Shilts grew up in the Chicago area. Cleaning up and subcategorizing into Category:California people by occupation

I noticed that there are a lot of articles in Category:People from California that aren't yet subcategorized by occupation. I'm in the process of moving those articles to the appropriate subcategories of Category:California people by occupation. Note that, as per the category description, most of the articles currently under Category:People from California shouldn't be there directly, but should rather be sorted into subcategories by occupation and geographical subregion.

Also, just an FYI that in the process of doing this I created Category:California sportspeople as a subcategory of Category:California people by occupation. The reason is that I noticed that while baseball players were properly subcategorized, there were a lot of racecar drivers and olympic medalists and other sportspeople not sorted by occupation. So this is a broad subcat to hold them.

Finally there were a small handful of articles I'm holding off moving for the moment that involve historical explorers and ranchers. I haven't yet looked into what the appropriate occupational subcat would be for them, but once I do I'll go back and take care of that as well.

Meanwhile, please feel free to let me know if you have any questions or suggestions on the cleanup. Hopefully it won't take too, too long to complete, and once it's done we'll be able to easily find all californians by occupation. Dugwiki 16:39, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Just a quick follow-up, I've gotten into a lengthy discussion with someone at [[1]] who is advocating deleting Category:California people by occupation. His opinion appears to be that California articles should only be subdivided by county/city and not by occupational groupings.

Since you guys are the main project that deals with California, I'd be interested in your feedback in that discussion. Do you feel that dividing the California biographies by occupation is useful? Or do you feel the scheme should be abandoned for some reason? Take a look at the cfd above and let me know what you think. If the general consensus here is to keep doing the occupational subdivisions as well as the geographic ones, then I'll keep cleaning doing the work I started the other day. If not, though, and you guys generally want to abandon Category:California people by occupation, let me know and I'll stop the work I've been doing to clean it up.

Valley Springs, California

An editor recently added to Valley Springs, California a "Notable People" section that consisted entirely of people who are not demonstrably notable. I reverted this with a note to see the talk page, and explained on the talk page that a "Notable People from x" listing is meant to list people who are notable beyond the sphere of the locale, not merely well-known within it. The editor again added the same text; I reverted again, with a note referencing the talk page. Another IP has since joined in by adding the same text again. False Statement,

cite needed: "was nicknamed the Luke Skywalker building for its dramatic posture overlooking the bay, in contrast to its ominous looking neighbor office building that was nicknamed the Darth Vader building." 

In fact it was named that because Theodore W. Brown, the architect of he Dakin building, asked his 8 year old son Barrett what he thought the two buildings looked like and Barrett responded "Darth Vader and Luke skywalker." The article mostly covers the law enforcement activities of the agency (i.e., game wardens) and doesn't address any of the conservation, fisheries, or data activities performed by DFG. Strawberry, Marin County / Tuolomne County / El Dorado County disambiguation

Most online map or weather searches for Strawberry, CA return results for either the small community in Tuolomne County near Pinecrest or the small community in El Dorado County southwest of South Lake Tahoe. However, Wikipedia only mentions one Strawberry—the one in Marin County (the most populated one and the only one I didn't know of). I was a little confused at first when I began reading an article on one place while expecting it to be about another. Importance of National Historic Landmarks and NRHPs

I'm beginning to contribute on some of the 135 National Historic Landmarks covered in List of National Historic Landmarks in California. In general I am inclined to give NHLs importance=Mid, and to give sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), of which there are many more, importance=Low.
