Lists of articles in reference books

Hi, all. I have been going about creating, at least starting, lists of articles for the various religion related WikiProjects based on the articles contained in other print reference works relating to that topic. The list for Hinduism is now started at Wikipedia:WikiProject Hinduism/Encyclopedic articles. I do expect to be adding lists of articles from other reference sources in the new future, as a go through them, so it will get longer, but I do think that having such lists should help the editors here determine which articles, if any, are significant but perhaps still missing, and in some cases determine which article some specific content might perhaps best fit in. "Dharmic writers"

Some time ago (2007), the article Dharmic religion was deleted after this deletion discussion and redirected to Indian religions. Category:Dharmic religions was deleted in 2008 after this deletion discussion. There is currently a deletion discussion about the final remnant category of these POV forks, Category:Dharmic writers. Attention may also need to be paid to {{Modern Dharmic writers}}, which contains such occultists as Helena Blavatsky. This all seems rather ill-defined and not source based. Please consider participating in this discussion. Thank you. Yworo (talk) 17:09, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

Can original Sanskrit Sources be used as references?

Can Sanskrit documents from online sources be cited in references on articles Hinduism.I am really hamstrung by not including them,as the translations into english are themselves copyrighted,or in some cases, translation do not exist at all. The sources I am referring to are:

And many articles, like this one,,suffer from lack of proper citations. So,if the original text could be included to clarify this...?

I would like an opinion on this issue. Guru-45 19:12, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

No, original Sanskrit Sources are WP:PRIMARY sources and should not be used as can be misinterpreted. English translations with commentaries may be considered reliable. --Redtigerxyz Talk 17:53, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
What about translations and commentaries in other languages like Bengali or Telegu?Guru-45 07:09, 24 May 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Guru-45 (talkcontribs)
My personal opinion is that because many readers of the English language wikipedia will not be able to check or read these references (which is of course the purpose of having references) non-English secondary sources should not be used as a sole reference. I don't see any harm in them being added as a second reference though. -- Q Chris (talk) 07:55, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
That's not how it is. Non-English sources can be used as secondary sources even with no English sources to support. An article on English Wikipedia can stay here with all references being non-English irrespective of whether majority of people can verify it or not. They simply can not be used as primary sources for commentaries but can be used to cite quotes. Meaning, you cannot use the sanskrit Bhagavad Gita to explain the meaning of "karmanye vadhikaraste ma phaleshu kadachana" but you can use it to cite this quote. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {T/C} 09:14, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I see you are right. The Verifiability section on non-English sources does say that "English-language sources are preferred over non-English ones, where English sources of equal quality and relevance are available" though. -- Q Chris (talk) 10:17, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
So,I can add the relevant citations to a commentary,to support what I am putting in,even if it is in Bengali or some other language?Guru-45 (talk) 17:28, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
It is better to non-English sources than no references. However, if reliable English sources exist, non-English sources should be preferred. Redtigerxyz Talk 17:39, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Ambarisha Article

Another king Ambarisa (king Rama ancestor) offers the youth Sunahshepa in sacrifice.
Another king Ambarisa (king Rama ancestor) offers the youth Sunahshepa in sacrifice.

This picture does not seem to be authentic for the following reasons:

1. This picture seems to contain Arabic script, whereas it is supposed to be a depiction of an ancient Hindu king. This does not add up since Arabic has never/rarely be used in Hindu art.

2. This picture shows figures that are most probably meant to be Brahmins, but they are not shown to have sacred threads.

3. The architecture of the buildings in the picture are Islamic.

The authenticity of this picture needs to be verified. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Akashputhraya (talkcontribs) 14:24, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Article on Sanat Kumara in need of attention

Sanat Kumara is part of this project but I have no idea if what it says about Sanat Kumara and Hinduism is correct. Dougweller (talk) 21:33, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

The talk page has a post saying "Where is the reference to the Hinduism section? Hinduism doesn't say anything about Shambala, nor about Cosmic, Planetary and etc Planes, or even that Sanat Kumar rules over them.

About Mahabharata, it is said "These details are given in the last chapters of Mahabharata". Where?

"Sanath Kumar is the Planetary Lord. It is said that He receives the energies from higher planes, in the month of Aries, and transmits them to the Spiritual Hierarchy in the month of Taurus."

Again, where is it said?

All this sound very theosophic, but not hindu. Please, include the references, or change it" That was by an IP over a year ago. Dougweller (talk) 21:36, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Dougweller You may have noticed already that WP has 2 separate articles. The article Sanatkumara details the Hindu mythology and is part of this project on Hinduism. While this article Sanat Kumara that you have highlighted is not listed as under the Hinduism project, since it has much more information than from traditional Hinduism. Also, noticed that in addition to a small section on Hinduism, this article include a section on Marvel comics. :) Prodigyhk (talk) 12:40, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

It might be useful for more people to work on expanding a section at the article Neo-Vedanta - a new section, near the top, on the history and definition of the term. Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:09, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Fringe material at Dwarkadhish Temple

I just moved and cleaned up a bit Dwarkadhish Temple (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) and some of the fringe stuff about it being 2500 years old was immediately replaced. I can't comment on all the sources (and one link doesn't work), but Archaeology of India: retrospect and prospect - page 159, Amar Nath Khanna was written before the research I used to date the temple to the 15th century. And even that source seems to say something different.[5] I think that there is a structure there about 2000 years old but haven't yet firmly sourced it. Thanks. Hello. Would anybody be able to look at the Demigod article, please? There's a long section dealing with Hinduism that cites no sources. Koenraad Elst (serious NPOV violations in a BLP article)

There is a discussion on the very serious NPOV (Neutrality) violations in the BLP article Koenraad Elst at the BLP noticeboard .

The NPOV violations were explained in great detail by the subject of the lemma here:

These links say among other things:

Well, there you have it. The lemma on me has ended up taking this form because some militant among your contributors purposely wanted to “warn readers” against me. Please cite me an instruction for encyclopedists that names “warning” among the legitimate goals of an encyclopedia.
Either you remove the lemma altogether, or you straighten it out and apply the rules of encyclopedia-writing to it. At any rate, in a encyclopedia, I count on being judged for what I myself have said or done, and not for the gossip my declared enemies have come up with.
If Wikipedia wants to live up to its promise of being a reliable encyclopedic source, it will strike this and all sentences resembling it from its article on me. At most, it can use me as an example of how it was fooled by some of its all-too-partisan collaborators. Speaking of whom: the history page accompanying my page proves forever that some Wikipedia collaborators wanted to inflict on me the maximum harm possible, an attitude incompatible with work for an encyclopedia.

The old discussion was here:

Because of the very serious NPOV violations in a BLP article, this requires the attention of neutral editors. --Calypsomusic (talk) 09:03, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

Leaflet For Wikiproject Hinduism At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Intrusion into Sai Baba of Shirdi article.

There are 14 mentions of Meher Baba in the Sai Baba of Shirdi article, which up until this time has enjoyed a rare Hinduism GA (Good Article) status. Many of these additions were placed recently by a single editor, Danice thrall. This editor seems to have it in her mind to proselytize about Baba on articles of other masters Baba mentioned. In truth, Meher Baba never formally met Sai Baba. Rather there is a single witness that Sai Baba said one word to him. Baba did have a connection to a disciple of Sai Baba, Upasni Mahraj. I think some editors versed in Sai Baba from the Hinduism project should take a look at all this out-of-place fuss about Meher Baba in the Sai Baba article. This is like mentions in the past of Sathya Sai Baba being very exaggerated in the Shirdi Sai article. Please help me weed out some of this intrusion of Meher Baba into the Sai article by Meher followers. Dazedbythebell (talk) 19:59, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Sompura Brahmin is unclear and hard to understand in many places, due I'm sure in large part to non-native or Indian English and partly to unexplained Hindu terms, such as shilp-shastra. Temples

Use of Sri and Swamy in temple names. Some don't use like Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, Hanuman Temple, Kedara-Gouri, Kanaka Durga Temple. To maintain uniformity there should be a consensus.--Vin09 (talk) 05:39, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

No! Each temple name should be taken case by case. You can't maintain uniformity as we have to use names based on what it is commonly known as. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {Talk / Edits} 05:51, 5 August 2015 (UTC) (User:Dharmadhyaksha's response copied from WT:INB)
@Vin09: I don't see any relevant move discussions at any of the three temples you listed, so I am not sure what alternate name you are proposing or why. Can you clarify? Abecedare (talk) 06:17, 5 August 2015 (UTC)
@Abecedare:I am actually supporting the above names, I stated them for example. I instead want to know the naming for pages which are unlike the above famous ones like, Sri Anjaneya Swamy Temple, Shamanur, Sri Laxmi Venkatesh Temple etc.--Vin09 (talk) 08:04, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Weak oppose - It depends upon the name of the temple. Keeping uniformity in the temple names such as use of Sir or Swamy may not be relevant, though I suggest go with the references. 16:04, 5 August 2015 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cutest Penguin (talkcontribs)

Help Akshardham Environment Violation Section

Hello Everyone,

If you have time would you please take a look at this article: [8] and this discussion [9] and provide your input. There is a cited content dispute I am having [10] and I feel that this board can help with some clarification for this topic. I was told to post here and I would find help. There seems to be a group of swaminarayan followers who refuse to allow cited information in the article. Also if you are member of this group, could you please refrain from providing a biased POV. It is difficult to be neutral because members of BAPS feel like it is their duty to make sure their group is portrayed a certain type of way on Wikipedia from cited controversy. Their group is not above Hinduism and their buildings are not better then any other one especially when there are valid citations. Another editor has asked openly for help on improving what has been written so please feel free to do so directly in the article.

Thank you, Swamiblue (talk) 03:14, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi All,

The translation of the word SANKALPA

Hello all,

So, I am just surfing on the internet, checking on some stuff related to the "SANKALPA", and I found out that you misspelled the sanskrit traduction.

You write " संकल्प " , which actually means "SANSKRIT" and not SANKALPA

I really dont know how to write it, but Im sure its not like that. I don´t know if anyone here of the editing team has this kind of knowledge.

And please, if I am the one who is wrong, please let me know. Its important to me to know how to write SANKALPA in sanskrit. (2 november 2015) APLG88 (talk) 01:35, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Contradiction between articles Sati (practice) and Sati (goddess)

In the Sati (practice) article, an (unsourced) section claims:

Although the myth of the goddess Sati is that of a wife who dies by her own volition on a fire, this is not a case of the practice of sati. The goddess was not widowed, and the myth is quite unconnected with the justifications for the practice.

Meanwhile, in the Sati (goddess) article, a sourced sentence in the header claims:

The act of Sati, in which a Hindu widow immolates herself on her husband's funeral pyre as a final and consummate act of loyalty and devotion, is patterned after the deed committed by this goddess to uphold the honour of her husband.

It is sourced to Kinsley, David (1987, reprint 2005). Hindu Goddesses: Visions of the Divine Feminine in the Hindu Religious Tradition, Delhi: Motilal Banarsidass, ISBN 81-208-0394-9, p.35.

I'd tend to trust a sourced claim by default, but could someone with a deeper understanding of the subject than mine - which isn't hard - take a look?

(Incidentally - and purely out of curiosity, is there a {contradiction} template available?) 194.7.114.2 (talk) 11:58, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

Suiten as a version of Varuna

@Joshua Jonathan, VictoriaGrayson, Ms Sarah Welch, Kautilya3, and Ogress: There has been a series of additions made by Japanese IP editors to the Varuna page and the Suitengū (Tokyo) page. These are currently uncited claims that Varuna is the same as the Shintoist deity Suiten. The lack of citation and poor syntax of the edits makes me suspicious and google gives me nothing on the connection. There may be an actual connection, but it doesn't seem well documented and may just be a case of interpretatio greaca where they are simply comparing two water deities with no concrete connection. Does anyone have any citations that confirm this connection or a strong enough background in both Hinduism and Shintoism to confirm this as original research? Iṣṭa Devatā (talk) 17:48, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

@Iṣṭa Devatā: Suiten is Varuna (see this at pages 121, 310, 415 etc), and many Shinto/East Asian deities have links to Hindu deities. If you are satisfied after WP:V, please add that Adrian Snodgrass' source to the two articles, and welcome the @IP from Japan. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 18:56, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
Well that certainly proves that academics hold that association. At the same time, it would be nice to have a source that explains the link more clearly, rather than the parenthetical mention of Suiten in the Snodgrass. I remember reading Alexis Sanderson explaining the whole evolution of a form of Shiva into a deity of outhouses in Japan with the different steps in between the two. Something like that for this would be great (if it's possible). The question I'm left with is: did they evolve separately and merge, or did Japan reinterpret Varuna to create Suiten? IOW: Is Suiten equivalent or derivative of Varuna? That said: quick turn-around on the Snodgrass, Sarah! Impressive. Iṣṭa Devatā (talk) 22:10, 29 December 2015 (UTC)

Adam's Bridge

Reference link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBpQiJt3MUQ Pre-Islamic history of the Middle East "you came up with a very good work and did Brilliant job." A very well researched with homework done history and historical!? video of Middle East.

What are the proportionate-chances, this kind of History was not there in India? You mistakenly forgot to include Aryan(s), Akkaads, Arkadians, etc!? were these Assyrians at historical times?

All India was very much reachable from land and water and air (spirits-souls-theological After-Life) birds except hinderance from Himalayas. it would be better if somebody come up with this kind of Realistic History of India. History of India 's ruined somehow by Arya(n)ism and Mythology!?

Who built the Adam's Bridge that linked South India- Sri lanka? refernce link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam%27s_Bridge

Brahmanic Followers or Abrahamic Followers or Civilians and Followers of More Ancient Socio-Religions'-Artiso-Politico-Policing-Traditional-Ritual-Cultural (sub) systems?

Who needed a bridge if it could be easily reachable by boats, dinghy (dongi), ships?

Where else this kind of Shoal-Coral-Rock-Bridge found built on across any-other river or sea or ocean!?

Was this 48 km bridge war-crafted OR peace times man made rock, shoal and coral depositing, rearing and kept up (upkeep) by Ancient Indians- Sri Lankans classes and groups?

Why did English-Europeans call Senior-Settlers of North-America as American-Indians?

-Thank You — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maneesh.kr (talkcontribs) 12:43, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

@Maneesh.kr: Who built it?
"...is a chain of limestone shoals, between Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, off the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu, India, and Mannar Island, off the north-western coast of Sri Lanka. Geological evidence suggests that this bridge is a former land connection between India and Sri Lanka."
So the builder, depending upon your theology, is either a deity of some description or is a natural geological process.
As for naming, well, they had to call them something, and they were looking for a route to the lands where spices are common. It is likely they believed that they had landed in India. How was India named? Fiddle Faddle 13:45, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

The Kali article could use some knowledgable eyes and editing. Technically it's a Good Article, but sources and writing have degraded sections of it to the point that it no longer meets the criteria. I've added several "Better source" tags, which have been removed by another editor, and now added back by myself. Kali is the only article this editor has ever edited, so they don't have a lot of experience — I've given them some links to learn more about sourcing. Kleshas

These articles and their redirects need to be untangled: Kleshas (Hinduism), Kleshas, and Kleshas (Buddhism). Particular attention needs to be paid to Kleshas, which used to be a disambiguation page. Right now it says The Five Poisons are five perceived threats to the stability of the rule of the Communist Party of China., with nothing about the etymology and no mention of the other articles. It seems fine to me if it's an overview or summary article instead of a dab page, but it's incomplete as it is.

The redirects to these articles seem pretty random; sorting them out might be easy for someone knowledgeable in these areas. — Gorthian (talk) 19:24, 10 February 2017 (UTC)

Disambiguation links on pages tagged by this wikiproject

Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.

This article badly needs watchlisting, especially be people with some sense of which news sources in India are reliable and which are tabloid trash who print what they're paid to. The article has been veering between blatant attacks to claims of miracles and godhead, and is primarily edited by WP:SPAs who are either the subject followers or abject haters of him. The article is presently dominated by scandal, and while there's been non-scandal material posted it's not been sourced. See the talk page for a long list of still-unresolved disputes (I think the majority of the threads on the page are unresolved).  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  23:45, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Missing article?

Nongthang Leima refers to the attributes of a goddess; but Attribute is a DAB page, and nothing on it relates to Attribute (Hinduism), which according to my limited understanding is a notable topic in its own right.

(I think I've seen similar DABfixing problems with the attributes of Hindu deities before. Lord knows where those links now point to, but the targets are likely to be Europe-based and unlikely to be in any way relevant.) Narky Blert (talk) 21:00, 17 March 2020 (UTC)

Vedic vs. Puranic/Epic versions of myths

There is often significant differences between versions of myths in the Vedas and the later Puranas/epics. For example, in the Rigveda, Vasishta's parents are Varuna, Mitra, and Ushas. However in the Puranas, his father is Brahma. Basically I am saying that if someone is mentioned in both the Vedas and Puranas/Epics, the Vedic versions should be given roughly equal status in the articles and infoboxes, and should be place first as the Vedic versions chronologically came first. I think that Vedic myths should be given a similar amount of space on articles and infoboxes as Puranic/epic myths are, and have just as much value as Puranic/epic myths. In addition there is a distinction between history and myths among certain figures. Certain kings and sages found in the Vedas were likely to have been historical figures with parts of their lives documentented in the Vedas. However in later Puranas and epics, they merge into mythology as they are included as characters in various stories and genealogies that are known to not be historical (for example, say Parikshit or Vishwamitra). If a figure is mentioned in the Vedas as a historical figure (and can be referenced from a reliable source), their historical Vedic nature should be separated from their mythological Puranic character counterpart.Chariotrider555 (talk) 22:37, 2 November 2020 (UTC)

Development needed for Ramayana related articles

Hello everyone, I have been editing articles related to the Mahabharata and try to add more citations, content and info.

What I have observed is that somehow articles related to Ramayana are not well developed. For example, Dashratha and Kaikeyi, despite being major characters, lack content and ref. Earlier there used to be content and info but no ref, so a user removed info instead of adding ref. There are many more such articles including Manthara, Shatrughan, Bharata (Ramayana), Kumbhakarna and Kaushalya, which are not well developed. I request everyone to see the situation and help. I think we should bring back content from the history of articles and add ref.

Update to peer review page

Hi all, I've boldly updated your project's peer review page (Wikipedia:WikiProject Hinduism/Peer review) by updating the instructions and archiving old reviews.

The new instructions use Wikipedia's general peer review process (WP:PR) to list peer reviews. Your project's reviews are still able to be listed on your local page too.

The benefits of this change is that review requests will get seen by a wider audience and are likely to be attended to in a more timely way (many WikiProject peer reviews remain unanswered after years). The Wikipedia peer review process is also more maintained than most WikiProjects, and this may help save time for your active members.

I've done this boldly as it seems your peer review page is pretty inactive and I am working through around 90 such similar peer review pages. Please feel free to discuss below - please ping me ({{u|Tom (LT)}}) in your response.

Cheers and hope you are well, Tom (LT) (talk) 23:05, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

New user changing multiple article titles to "Xyz Temple" contrary to MoS

A new user, Jaysonsands, has changed multiple articles on Hindu temples to Title Case so that the word "Temple" appears with a capital letter. This is contrary to the MoS, and to common practice. I've notified the user; given the policy on titles, wide consensus would be needed for such a change, which would probably require the MoS to be amended, i.e. it isn't going to happen. Pandavas' father

Hello, I wanted to discuss about the fathers of Pandavas (Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva). In the infobox, Pandu is called the "father", while the gods who fathered the Pandavas are named as "spiritual fathers". Should we use "acknowledged/official father" for Pandu? .245CMR.👥📜 06:00, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

@Redtigerxyz, Panchalidraupadi, and Chariotrider555: What fo you think about this? .245CMR.👥📜 08:13, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

@245CMR: Pandu could be adoptive father. (Panchalidraupadi (talk) 10:12, 3 July 2021 (UTC))

As per ancient Hindu practice of niyoga, Pandu would be considered the father; not the gods, the biological fathers. Pandava is a patronymic. However in the modern parlance, the god is the father and Pandu is the adoptive father. The epics relate that Hanuman and Bhima being both sons of Vayu; thus brothers. --Redtigerxyz Talk 12:32, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

User:245CMR, an adopted father is the official/acknowledged father, so adopted father would work for Pandu. I don't think spiritual father is a good description because it seems to sort of imply that the gods were their religious leaders, rather than their fathers. I would suggest using "Divine father" for the gods who fathered the Pandavas. Chariotrider555 (talk) 16:25, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

@Chariotrider555, Panchalidraupadi, and Redtigerxyz: Thank you for responses. Ok, I am changing "spiritual" to "divine". Looks like most of the figures in Hindu mythology are adopted. Eg. Rama (born because of the porridge, adopted by Dasharatha), Sita (born from Earth, adopted by Janaka), Draupadi (born from yajna, adopted by Drupada), etc. but all of them are regarded as their adoptive fathers' real children. May be Pandu should be left as "father" as per Redtigerxyz comment..245CMR.👥📜 16:38, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

"Para Brahman" or "Param Brahma"?

While reading the "Brahman" page, I came across the link to the "Para Brahman" page. I followed that link, and I noticed that on that page, the title is indeed "Para Brahman", but in the contents of the page, only "Param Brahma" is mentioned. Now, I am an almost complete nitwit as far as Hinduism is concerned, but I do know that "Brahma" and "Brahman" refer to different concepts and should not be confused. So what is going on here? Am I missing something? Or am I right, and should, consequently, the title of the page be changed to "Param Brahma" or should the contents, where necessary, be changed to "Para Brahman"?

Regards, Jaap.

Jaap.Verhage (talk) 12:36, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

Both are correct, a word can have multiple meanings and sometimes, Brahman is used for Brahma. Other eg. Vishvakarma-Vishvakarman, Pusha-Pushan, etc. However, you can change Para Brahma into Para Brahman for uniformity..245CMR.👥📜 12:42, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

Help with an article

Hello everyone. This article's Hinduism section is sorely lacking. Any help would be appreciated! Religious views on masturbation

JewelsVerne (talk) 21:26, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

@JewelsVerne: Apparently the Hindu scriptures either don't mention it or don't oppose it. Of course, quite many gurus of modern Hinduism beg to disagree, but that is strictly belonging to the modern world, not a traditional dogma of Hinduism. Oh, yes... the monks. But the article is not speaking about monks, it speaks of rank-and-file Hindus. If one took a vow of chastity, they have a problem with masturbation. If they didn't, then they don't. And even for those who took such vow, it is just a minor transgression.
The WP:RS are these:
Same as for the Christianity and the Bible: a condemnation of masturbation for laypeople just isn't there in the Hindu scriptures. tgeorgescu (talk) 05:01, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
@Tgeorgescu: Well, the article currently has three whole sentences on it. Intuitively, that seems like it's going to miss some context. I mean, the bible doesn't explicitly condemn masturbation, and yet we have numerous paragraphs covering the issue. Three sentences is pathetic, we need more, and people familiar with Hinduism would be the best to ask for help (I'm assuming you're not Hindu, from my previous interactions with you). Also, if any prominent modern gurus disagree, we should talk about that, as a religion is not made exclusively of it's holey text, but of the practitioners in it.
@JewelsVerne: There was a WP:RSN topic about Mantak Chia and masturbation, and the conclusion is that Taoism isn't science, and Mantak does not even represent Taoism, rather he represents New Age cults. tgeorgescu (talk) 22:15, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
@Tgeorgescu: We are talking about Hinduism, not Taoism. I'm here to ask the Hindu wiki project for help on the Hindu section, not the Taoist section. Come on man, it'd obviously be helpful for the Hinduism wiki project to help with the Hinduism section. Why are you following me around Wikipedia to argue about this, and making unrelated points? Do you still think I'm the vandal from the Philippines? I'm starting to wonder if you're harassing me.
@JewelsVerne: Above I wasn't accusing you of anything. About Mantak: he claims that he is a Taoist guru. Pretty much the same others pretend that they are Hindu gurus. But in fact they're New Age gurus. The Dhat syndrome might be a popular superstition, but it isn't religion. tgeorgescu (talk) 01:13, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

The reason Hinduism says nothing about masturbation might be that Hinduism thinks sex is pretty unimportant. The backstory is that in the time that Christianity was forming, the Roman world became extremely anti-sex (this actually pre-dated Christianity). Christianity, quite naturally, then became extremely anti-sex itself - by the 2nd century chastity was regarded as the ideal state, and by the 4th the Virgin Mary had been joined by the Virgin Joseph. Judaism managed to escape this, but Islam did not. Meanwhile, in Asia, sex continued to be just a part of life. Achar Sva (talk) 09:58, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

There is nothing more satisfying then seeing a backlog go to zero. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get the Semi-Protected Edit Requests below 1, as this ER has been sitting there unanswered. I am not an expert on these things and cannot claim to know enough about Hinduism to properly answer this edit request - can someone here who knows more answer, please? casualdejekyll 23:56, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Ramayana says "Ramayana is one of the two Itihasas of Hinduism, the other being the Mahābhārata."

Itihasa indeed includes Puranas. I think, in Ramayana, it should be written as "one of the two important legends of Hinduism." NPOV problem at Kala pani (taboo)

I've just removed this passage, which was in Wikipedia's voice, from the article Kala pani (taboo):

The mleccha people were spawned by immoral reprobates and blasphemously held religious belief in nāstika, albeit in different forms. They are understood to have rejected the Vedas and have ceased to worship Bhagavan, the divine Vedic God, in favor of concocted false religions and irreligions with contemptible manners of reverence. Their societies are immoral and built on deceit, subjugation, and corruption. Therefore, it was thought that true Hindus should not come under their influence or embrace their beliefs, as they will be just as deserving of contempt as a mleccha.[citation needed]

Among other problems, this seems a bit unverifiable, since it "mleccha" might reasonably be translated as "barbarian" (and the vast majority of non-Hindus are not ex-Hindus; this line parallels medieval Christian beliefs that early Muslims were all or mostly converts from Christianity, which they weren't). It was added in 2018 by an IPv6 IP editor[12] and tagged cn last August. I hope this means that this IP editor is long gone, but any eyes on the article and its conceptual neighbours would be welcome. HLHJ (talk) 01:47, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

The Use of the Phrase of "Hindu Mythology"

While I understand that this project was created with good intentions, the phrase "Hindu Mythology" has erupted throughout all Wikipedia articles about Hinduism- or Hindu-related gods and can be interpreted as disrespectful. Hinduism is a religion, a way of life, and the 1 billion people who follow this way of life hold its "myths" in high regard. The phrase "Hindu mythology" has been incorrectly used synonymously with the religion for many years, which is understandable, but perhaps it is time to modify that. It is disturbing to simply dismiss the religion as "mythology" given that it is still practiced by a significant portion of the world's population (about 15%). Additionally, as a Hindu myself, I believe it to be quite disrespectful to both my existence and my beliefs, and I have no doubt that other Hindus will share this opinion. This religion, our way of life, is a reality for many, so please refrain from dismissing it as a myth. I humbly request that the use of mythology in this project should be corrected.

The definition of a myth: A traditional story, typically involving supernatural beings or forces, which embodies and provides an explanation, etiology, or justification for something such as the early history of a society, a religious belief or ritual, or a natural phenomenon. Well, this term does appear to be more respectful than most people are giving it credit for. However, note that the word "story" appears as the third word in this definition. This word carries a connotation that this "narrative" is fictional. Furthermore, for a long time in our society, the terms "story" and "myth" were mistakenly used interchangeably. The point I am trying to make is that there are more respectful terms out there to use in place of this derogatory term.

I believe the article (linked below) put it best...although the words myth or mythology itself do not mean fiction, they certainly imply it. Perhaps using the phrase "Hindu epics" or "Hinduism" itself is a start. https://bookriot.com/hindu-epics-are-they-myths/

Thank you for understanding and hope to see some changes! :) 104.230.12.92 (talk) 22:22, 21 March 2023 (UTC)

This is such a complex issue that we have an article about it at Religion and mythology; some of the later parts are the more interesting. The word "myth" within early Christianity was often derogatory, but to European academics, traditionally steeped in the Greek classical tradition and thus familiar with the classical usage, the word "myth" was positive. In my experience, Christian academics (including clergy) are generally quite enthusiastic about Christian mythology and see myth as an essential part of religion; the same people, in a non-religious context, may use "myth" to describe a popular false story (e.g. "The idea that COVID-19 is caused by the 5G cellphone network is a myth"). "Mythic" can be used to mean "non-existent" or "epic, impressive, great in scope".
The use of "myth" to describe the narrative elements of a religion, and distinguish them from, say, ritual and theology, is very handy, which is presumably why it's widely used in reliable academic sources. Referring to an entire religion as a "myth" is not in any way reasonable, and we shouldn't; we should call it a "religion" (or, as you suggest, name the specific religion). I think calling the entire religion a myth is what you are objecting to.
I also agree that there is a tendency of people (especially outside academic writing) to use the term "myth" to describe the narrative elements of religions other than their own, and not to use it to describe their own religions, and that such distinctions are non-neutral. Using "myth" non-neutrally or pejoratively for religious narratives that are fundamental elements of the religion is also highly problematic. Wikipedia editors, writing from academic sources for lay readers, are a bit stuck in between sociolect usages, and we might reasonably reach a consensus on how to use the word (but the place for that discussion is probably Wikipedia talk:Neutral point of view, not here). At the very least, we should try to use such terms consistently. We should not edit the word out of articles one one religion and insert it into articles on others.
"Story" is sometimes used for fiction: "It's just a story [it isn't a true story]". But "The journalist said 'I stand by my story!'" clearly uses it for a factually accurate statement. "A likely story!" implies both are possible. Depending on the context, "story" could be pejorative, but in religious contexts it usually isn't. "Narrative" is anything narrated or told, so it is very clearly neutral with respect to the accuracy of the content narrated. But "myth" is more specific than "story" or "narrative". If I told you about how I slipped and fell into a lake at a wedding, it would be a story, but not a myth, regardless of whether it actually happened or not or whether the wedding was a religious ceremony. At least, in my sociolect, and probably those of many editors... HLHJ (talk) 02:53, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
Well said. As an example, see the linked discussions under "This page has previously been nominated to be moved. Before re-nominating, review the move requests listed below." at Talk:Genesis creation narrative (or at Talk:Association football, which has been called a religion 😉). Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Hanuman chalisa text getting deleted from Hanuman Chalisa wiki page.

please go to this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanuman_Chalisa and see the History and you will find that people have started deleting the Hanuman chalisa text from this page, I tried adding it back but now its blocked from editing. Please help resorting it back to the way it was. Bajranbali (talk) 16:17, 25 May 2023 (UTC)

Why are you trying to add the full text against the guidelines? Dāsānudāsa (talk) 11:28, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Anti Hindu propaganda

There is a long discussion on the Ashvamedha page about the actual sources of the ridiculous claims about the ritual. The moderators are not changing their opinion even after showing so many proofs. Help needed:

I don't see any "anti-Hindu propaganda". It seems you want the article censored because descriptions of the ritual (which is pre-what most people would consider "Hindu", anyway) offend your modern sentiments. Dāsānudāsa (talk) 17:55, 25 June 2023 (UTC)
Why is Wikipedia full of Marxists ? I'm asking for the proof for the claims from original sources and so far all they have been able to provide or some books written by colonial and foreign authors with ZERO reference to the original sources for their claims. Most Indian authors' translations have no such nonsense and I have given several links to such books as well. So, when there is a dispute, Wikipedia policy itself says that we should refer to the original sources, but the moderators refuse to do that. They either obfuscate the discussion or point to some random blogs written by anti-Hindu Islamists. Rajesh1112 (talk) 06:56, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
BTW, the Wikipedia article on Quran does not mention anything about the controversial verses used by terrorists today. But Wikipedia is very particular about some rituals that have no proof of existence 4000 years ago. So much for being professional. Rajesh1112 (talk) 07:17, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
If you knew anything about my politics you'd know how ridiculous that sounds. You might also want to read WP:NPA. Dāsānudāsa (talk) 08:10, 26 June 2023 (UTC)
How is saying someone a Marxist a personal attack ? It's an ideology and their opinions are similar to many of the Indian Wikipedia moderators as far as I can see. Rajesh1112 (talk) 20:34, 26 June 2023 (UTC)

Shakti, Mahadevi, Devi Pages

Hello and Namaskara all! I am writing about the Shakti, Mahadevi, and Devi pages. After looking through each of these pages, I feel there is a lot of shared content and content that could be added from one page onto another. I am wondering if it would be worthwhile to combine two or all three of these pages into one? Of course this will be a huge undertaking but I do feel it will add clarity to the subject matter and the current separation of these pages is a bit confusing/makes it difficult to find the relevant information. What do you all think? Parmatma Ek Sevak

Could someone from this WikiProject take a look at Parmatma Ek Sevak? It looks like it started out as a stub, but someone tried to expand it in good faith a few years back, but didn't add any sources in support. Someone else did subsequently add some references, but these were added to the "References" section heading and not inline. Anyway, most of the article now reads like someone's WP:OR and the article will probably need to be reverted back to a stub if that can't be remedied. In addition, to the lack of sourcing, there are also various syntax errors that need to be cleaned up. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:48, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

One of the usual CoI "editors" who show up to promote this guru is peppering Talk:Nithyananda with demands for changes to the article, based on no sources or promotional sources or junk sources. However, they have made a claim that his (sourceable) confirmation as a mahamandaleshwar of Mahanirvani Akhara is very significant and belongs in the lead section. I don't know enough about the subject to be sure. "In 2019, nine foreigners were given the title mahamandaleshwar for the first time at the Kumbh Mela" isn't very encouraging, but for all I know the title means much more in the M.A. context.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  06:20, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

Hinduism page definitions section

Hi, I was wondering if someone here could help me. I am not sure how to bring a resolution to a conversation on the Hinduism talk page about the definitions section. The two main issues at hand are that 1.) The "Hindu views" sub-header is redundant since the entire page would presumably have Hindu views weaved throughout, and 2.) That the "Hindu modernism" section does not contain any definitions of Hinduism and thus would be best situated in the history section. A lot of editors have provided productive solutions. I am happy to explain in more detail but hope that a quick and obvious solution is within reach, since this conversation has probably gone on for too long. Thanks in advance, Hemmingweigh (talk) 12:20, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

List of largest Hindu temples

List of largest Hindu temples is a mess - the cited sources do not allude to any ranking, and the page does not describe what criteria (built-up area, area of the premises?) determines the "largest". Does anyone want to attempt a cleanup? If not, blowing it up and starting over may be the next step. utcursch | talk 02:34, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Questionable ip edits

An ip editor has made several edits to pages related to this project. The edit summaries don’t seem to match the changes made, but I can’t tell if the changes are constructive or not; they might be POV-pushing but I don’t know enough to tell. Could someone have a look?
