Auto-assessment

Hi guys, I notice that you've got a lot of unassessed articles within this project. You may want to use DodoBot (talk · contribs) which can auto-assess stubs or inherit assessments from other WikiProject banners on the talk page. I have found this bot to be useful in the past and it can definitely help when setting up a project with a lot of articles within its scope. List of Articles Improved

Good Idea - Suggest BE BOLD and add a section. I know the British Museum project included Museum Street and other non-artefact items. Maybe just a new title of "Much improved Articles" Victuallers (talk) 15:37, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Cuts - Silk Mill to close

As some will have heard, Derby are planning a series of cuts to the museum service, including closing Silk Mill altogether and closing the main museum Mondays. Hi James, you re mostly correct. The Silk Mill will be closed by the time of this event ..... and Derby Museums have agreed to re-open it just for us. They will also open up unseen areas of the main museum. I'm hoping that we will have enough wikipedians to photograph everything and write a "Start" article on the all the major exhibits. Arthur Keily

What should and shouldn't be categorised?

I'm not quite sure what the scope of the project will be. Am I correct in believing that what is relevant are artefacts and specific displays in the Museum.

As an example, although there an article about Duffield Castle it would not feature, since there isnt a display relating to it. Similarly the various Earls Ferrars.

On the other hand among the exhibits is a Norman bucket, which would be featured if there was a specific article about it?

I'm doing some work on the multilingual challenge, expected to climax in June/July. For that, in addition to items on display, topics that are clearly linked to the museum are likely to qualify (this might be demonstrated by a link to the museum in the text and maybe an external link to the museum website). NB this is a preliminary comment because the rules aren't finalised yet! But I suspect this would be the case for the whole collaboration: topics linked to the museum are potentially of interest. Roman?

Is there Roman material at the museum (or museums?) I can't see an answer on the website. If yes, does this include finds at the Roman sites in Derby? (I know of Strutts Park, Little Chester/Chester Green and the racecourse site) Andrew Dalby 13:12, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

We do have Roan material on display - a particularly important item being a recently purchased Carausius coin. We have a lot of excavated material in our reserve collections, including excavations from Little Chester and the racecourse. We have a number of staff with archaeological expertise, who I hope can be pursuaded to assist.Parkywiki (talk) 02:13, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Andrew, I went on a backstage pass (ready for real one) and saw boxes and boxes of finds and a hoard or two. BTW, did anyone know that Derby Museum is 175 years old this month! Publicity

• I have requested an advert for one month before (please feel free to improve or change date etc). This should appear at the top of "Watchlists" for UK users (sorry Andrew we'll need a wider one for next event?) See here. Would someone like to add a supporting sig there and suggest an alternative wording for the notice?
  • Task - The sign up page could be improved. Where do new people sign to attend, Can we add FAQs (see old BM page) e.g. if this a free lunch?

Queries

1. Does the picture on the left here show the collection of the Town and County Museum?
2. Are any of the items in it recognisable as major items in Derby Museum and Art Gallery's collection today? Andrew Dalby 12:47, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

The picture that is on the left of the back wall is Joseph Wrights "Romeo and Juliet" - Derby Museum site says so. The large "carriage clock" at the right foreground I Think is John Whitehursts. I think its one I saw on a backstage pass. I also (OR!) think some of the statues may be those now at Chatsworth. Derby Museum say their collection in Derby is based on this one on their web site. I also found that the painting is attributed to Samuel Rayner who is the dad of Louise Rayner. see here. Derby Museum staff I'm sure can add to this Victuallers (talk) 17:28, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Commons (2) and Categories

We seem to have two categories in Commons: "Category:Collections of Derby Museum and Art Gallery" and "Category:Derby Museum and Art Gallery" Chevin (talk) 17:11, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Do you fancy fixing it? I'm guessing the first one is more correct. I believe these are tools which can move a lot of items from one cat to another. However (whilst we are discussing cats) the British Museum also have an interesting category called "People associated with the ???? Museum". This may be very useful where we imply that people like Joseph Wright are in the colection. When its the person's paintings that are there. Do feel free to improve and add your name to the contributors list - as I hope those names will take priority. Cheers Victuallers (talk) 17:33, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

The standard is that Category:Museum Name is images of the museum itself or groups of works, while Collections of ... (or Paintings in..., Textiles in..., etc.) are for images of the objects themselves.

The hierarchy looks correct now, although over time we should probably add more subcats to "Category:Collections of Derby Museum and Art Gallery" as we get more images (other artists by name, Roman artifacts, and so on). - PKM (talk) 02:43, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

Template for Derby Museums

I see the British Museum has a template at the bottom of their articles - actually the one at the bottom of Reuben_Wells_(locomotive) may be more in line with our museum! How's this? It's a bit ragged, but I think this general idea will work. If we have articles on idividual artifacts in each of the museums, we can either:

• Change the title at the top to "Derby Museums" and put "Derby Museums and Art Gallery" in the list at the bottom, or
• Make subsections for each museum.

There are a couple of placeholders in it so you can see what it looks like. Those should probably be removed before we actually deploy this. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome! - PKM (talk) 02:09, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Links on Commons images

Further to discussion- I am looking at a way to provide a template link to put in the source field on a Commons upload. once we have the name we can work on the content. The template has to be simple for the uploader but it is then up to negotiation on what is finally displayed. This can be done simply through conditionals. This may be mission creep but I would like something that could be easily used for images from museums that have not yet joined the project.

Roman roads

We have Icknield Street; I want to add articles for the other Roman roads. I know that the one to Buxton has been called "The Street". What about the road that runs due west towards Chester: has it ever had a traditional name? Is it maybe the "Old Chester Road"? -- which happens to be the name of the road in Derby that runs west from the Roman site to the river, but I can't trace the name beyond that point. And what about the one that ran east towards Vernemetum: any traditional name for that road? I can create articles under simple descriptive names, but if there are traditional names I would prefer to use them. Andrew Dalby 11:35, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

OK, I've found the answer to the first question. The village name "Long Lane" on the Ordnance Survey map was the clue: other sources confirm that "The Long Lane" is or was the name of the Roman road west from Derby towards Chester. Andrew Dalby 13:49, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
