This course introduces students to Environmental Justice (EJ) as a wide-ranging field of study and practice. We discuss different ways of defining “justice” and “the environment,” and how terms such as environmental justice and environmental racism have developed and been contested. We cover the emergence of environmental justice movements in the United States in historical and global context, as well as key approaches to theorizing EJ in relation to current debates (around topics such as disasters and climate change, the role of the state, research ethics, and multispecies justice). Environmental Justice is a field centered on the knowledge and experience of underrepresented groups. These groups have been excluded from "mainstream" environmentalism and environmental science. The Wikipedia assignment will allow students to contribute to building and broadening public knowledge of people, organizations, events, and places that have played a notable role in environmental justice activism, policy, and theory.
