A working appreciation and knowledge of language acquisition and the reading process are essential for professional educators to facilitate the development of students’ literacy skills from birth through adulthood. Individuals who enter profession as literacy educators should understand the historically shared knowledge of the profession and develop the capacity to act on that knowledge responsibly. This preparation must include understanding the importance of and differences in the various cognitive and social contexts of reading and language use. Reflective classroom practice must be guided by research on the nature of language, learning, and reading. This course stresses the developmental processes of reading and knowledge acquisition from a variety of perspectives. It gives focus to the relationship between literacy theory, research, and practice.
