Course highlights topics related to Arts of Africa and the African Diaspora from Pre-history to present. Course will engage with a variety of media including but not limited to architecture, textiles, sculpture, painting, photography and performance. Throughout the course students critically will engage with the question "what are the 'Arts of Africa'? How is this category defined and how has this body of material been defined, categorized and capitalized upon in a transnational context. Course will consider not only the form and historical context of key objects of "African Art" but also how the continent is perceived and described in the Western context as well as issues of collection, repatriation and display.
