Staff from NIH and Wikipedia take enthusiastic first steps in a partnership to upgrade the scientific and medical information available through the popular online encyclopedia.

In honor of Women’s History Month, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is organizing and hosting an edit-a-thon to improve coverage of women in science in Wikipedia. The focus will be on women in science from or supported by NIH, or the NIH’s historical holdings of women in science.

Activities will include new editor orientation and training, organized with Wikimedia DC. There will be a morning session, with a repeat in the afternoon. People are welcome to join for one or both sessions. Refreshments generously supplied by Wikimedia DC.

Participation details[edit]

When: Friday, March 13th, 2015; 9:00am – 4:00pm

Who: NIH community and Wikipedians (see NIH guidelines below); No advanced technical skills required – those with experience will help

What to bring: Government-issued photo ID (allow time for security at the NIH entrance); Laptop computer with power cable; If you’ve been part of the data-gathering exercise leading up to the edit-a-thon, bring your files and photos; If you have not been part of the preparatory research work, there will be an ambitious task list for you to work on.
