Accented capitals in article names?

There's currently a requested-move debate going on about whether the article on a certain little town in southern Spain should be at "Ubeda" (most googlehits) or "Úbeda" (its actual name). Whatever decision is reached could very well set a precedent that would affect Úrsulo Galván, Álvaro Obregón, and any number of other articles about things that start with accented capital letters. I think articles should be named using the correct spelling, even if the spelling has less google hits. Then the accent-less spelling can be redirected to the correct name. We would definite affect the number of google hits since there at least three websites that mirror our articles. --Vizcarra 19:16, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

I tend to vote for the original spelling (in people/places). The problem is (as far as I remember) that categories can't be redir'd properly with the current version of MediaWiki, and cities/provinces tend to become cats once they get enough articles (i.e. someone can type "Nuevo Leon" and end up in "Nuevo León" almost instantly, but if he types "Category:Nuevo Leon" he won't be able to see the contents of "Category:Nuevo León". Not sure how to do that: maybe shrinking the size of the picture? I'll try. It's always very difficult to get a combination that looks nice in both 600x800 and 1280x1000, different fonts, browsers, etc. Is this any better? –Hajor 15:59, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

That's the version as it currently stands at {{ProjectMexico}}. "Educacion azteca" is appropriate to the topic, and it's nice to get away from yet another eagle-and-cactus, green-white-red flag, or Aztec calendar. I was just a bit worried about it not being terribly clear at that size/resolution. This user Contributions:68.93.82.10 had the brilliant idea of adding Category:Mexican people by city for the major cities of Mexico. However, he changed Category:People from State of Chihuahua to Category:People from Chihuahua. He (or she) is doing the same to Guanajuato. --Vizcarra 02:31, 10 November 2005 (UTC)

Political parties

User:Metzerly has been writing a bunch of articles about both political alliances and political parties that are, at least, not recognized by the Federal Electoral Institute (as far as I can tell). Some of them are historical parties (such as the PSUM), but some other look just spurious (such as Socialist Convergence (Mexico), Socialist Alliance (Mexico), Revolutionary Workers' Party (revived)), Socialist Unity League (Mexico), etc. Any comments of this? I haven't had the time to check, but they may be agrupaciones políticas nacionales. If they were, we would probably have to agree on notability criteria for inclusion, since most of them are not really spread all around the country, despite the name. These are certainly not proper political parties (except the historical ones, of course). Agrupaciones políticas nacionales tend to grow like mushrooms since it's relative easy to register one. Most of them probably disappear faster. We should probably put them all in a single article on agrupación política nacional and explain what they are. One or two may eventually deserve their own article, but not all of them. -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ 03:11, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

I haven´t check either but as Rune says there are many Agrupaciones politicas in Mexico (recognized by the IFE); those Agrupaciones receive money from the government. Also, in Mexico it is possible for a political party to be registered only in one state, lets say only in Yucatan or only in Sinaloa, those parties, by law, doesnt need to be recognized by the IFE, they only need to be recognized locally by the Consejos Estatales Electorales or the Institutos Estatales Electorales (depending the state), i.e., in Nuevo Leon there is a political party, the Partido Republicano that is officially recognized by the Comisión Estatal Electoral therefore is an official political party. These kind of political parties are formed by people that look for an economical benefit and by people that want to improve their situation. As long as it is easy to register one political party and the benefits one can get from doing this, there are many political parties in the country that appear and disappear. This is because the IFE or the Local institution gives money and support to these political parties when they have certain amount of votes but if they do not get this amount they lose their register. Other political parties are formed by groups (teachers, workers, …) that look for a better situation or for the improvement of his region by participating in the political area of its country.

Hidalgo

Somebody recently moved Hidalgo (Spanish nobility) to Hidalgo, and moved Hidalgo to Hidalgo (Mexico) citing that the Spanish nobility title is older. However, this has hardly ever been a good reason to move articles rather than deciding towards the more common use. I could cite a few obvious examples such as: Washington (George Washington is older]]), Louisiana (Louisiana, New France) is older. Many, many more links to "Hidalgo" refer to the state of Mexico than any other meaning, plus we do have a Category:Hidalgo that hardly any other "Hidalgo" can have soon. It is obvious where my stance is since I asked user:Hall Monitor to revert the change, but wanted to get other opinions. --Vizcarra 19:13, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

I agree with you on this one. Hidalgo as a name for the state is used far more often than the relatively obscure nobility title. Also, breaking all those links in a move without consensus is pretty bad form IMO. -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ 19:52, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

WikiProject Mesoamerica

Hi all. FYI, this new WikiProject has been set up and is under development, with a focus on improving the content, coverage and organisation of (pre-Columbian) Mesoamerica-related articles. You'd be welcome to take a look, while there's some overlap in territory and a little of the scope between that and WP:MEXICO, the central themes and approaches would be different. As it develops I'd expect there to be opportunity for coordination on some matters which might overlap, which shouldn't be a problem. Francis Stronge

This article, which is rather weak at the moment, recently came up for AfD. With a bit of Googling, I noticed that Stronge was ambassador to Mexico in 1913, and his willingness to truckle to Henry Lane Wilson may have played a role in la decena trágica. I'm not intimately familiar with the history of Mexico myself; would members of this WikiProject be able to fill in more information about Stronge's role at this period of Mexican history?
