Wikipedia:WikiProject Hinduism/Old Design

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Introduction[edit]

The WikiProject Hinduism is formed to improve articles related to Hinduism. This religion is known as Sanatana Dharma, "eternal religion," and Vaidika Dharma, "religion of the Vedas," although Hinduism is the most common English name for it.

The pages and sub-pages here are only suggestions, things to give you focus and to get you going, and you shouldn't feel obligated in the least to follow them. But if you don't know what to write or where to begin, following the guidelines below may be helpful. Mainly, we just want you to write articles!

Scope[edit]

This WikiProject aims primarily to promote better coordination, content distribution and cross-referncing between pages dealing with Hinduism and its sects, texts, terms, philosophies and eventually bring articles up to Featured article status.

Project organisation[edit]

To do[edit]

  1. Add the {{WikiProject Hinduism}} banner to the talk pages of all relevant articles.
  2. List these articles on the list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Hinduism/Articles by category.
  3. Check recent changes for recent improvements, vandalism, and other changes.

Article Construction[edit]

Please feel free to add suggestions.

We should probably discuss article types, which may have different parameters. For example, some of these types may be:

Texts[edit]

Articles on texts should include:

  • Authorship, if known. If the supposed authorship of a text is not established by scholarship, list it as an attribution: "The text is attributed to such-and-such.";
  • Date (use common era (C.E) or before common era (B.C.E.) notation);
  • Place of origin (if known);
  • A rough overview of the contents of the text;
  • Separate sections for particularly important ideas in the text. Alternatively, short descriptions and links to articles on said ideas;
  • Whatever caveats regarding disputes over readings of the text, etc;
  • Associated sect(s) (Indicate, where appropriate, whether the text originated within the sect or was adopted by it after the time of writing.);
  • A "See also" section for internal links;
  • An "External links" section for articles about the text and electronic versions of the text (or perhaps these could be in separate sections);

Formatting[edit]

Naming and Transliteration[edit]

Please see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Dharmic) for the proposed policy.

Categorizing[edit]

  • If an article is already in a subcategory within Hinduism, there is no need list it in the main Hinduism category.
  • When categorizing people, sort by their last names.

External links[edit]

It's easy to get carried away with links (notably the Hinduism page) - especially with several topics being interlinked with each other.

For the Hinduism page specifically,

  • External links should be generic links, that are relevant to Hinduism as a whole. Everything else, i.e. specialized material, can go in the related pages - some of the related stub-pages have few links and these links could enhance those pages. In short, if it can go on another Hinduism-related page, it needs to be there and not on the Hinduism page.
