Political disputes

Some articles are likely to be subject of disputes during the time their contents are discussed in the political life. A template should be created to inform that a current policy is to be changed. Much precautions should be taken when editing it until the new policy becomes official. I also fear that the old policy description disappears, while it should be transferred under a historical section.

The idea came to me because of the upcoming French territorial re-administration (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comit%C3%A9_pour_la_r%C3%A9forme_des_collectivit%C3%A9s_locales). During the next few months (until 2014), the following articles are to be deeply modified, although nobody really know precisely how and to which extends (upcoming elections): Administrative divisions of France, Departments of France, Regions of France, Communes_of_France#Intercommunality, Overseas regions of France, and so on...

The template should go like: "This article is currently subject to important political discussions that will decide the way it is to be edited. The present content will become obsolete within a period of <TIME>, and should be moved into a historical section. If you want to update the present content, be very careful to use official and definitive informations linked with their proper sources."

Articles in the course of translation

Hi, template-making people! — Please could I have a template similar to inuse that says something like "This article is in the process of being translated from (article link) in the (foreign language) wikipedia. In order to reduce edit conflicts, please consider not editing it while translation is in progress" ? — The reason I need it is because otherwise I get annoyed by db-whatever spam from recent changes patrollers if I save it before I get as far as the references or indications of notability. Thanks in advance!—S Marshall Talk/Cont 16:54, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Incidentally, if a template like this already exists, it's not listed in the WP:TIE pages anywhere.—S Marshall Talk/Cont 16:56, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
A work in progress: beingtranslated. I'll come back and look at it later. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:02, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Thank you. Fast and helpful!—S Marshall Talk/Cont 17:49, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Can you consolidate this with translation WIP? I'm not sure we really need both of these. Calliopejen1 (talk) 20:19, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Yes, you're right, they seem to serve the same purpose. S Marshall, do you like that one or are there any features of the new one which I could incorporate? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:22, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
On looking at it, I don't think they serve quite the same purpose. It's like the difference between inuse and underconstruction — translation WIP says, "I'm translating this article, please help me", but beingtranslated says, "I'm translating this article right now, please don't touch it til I've finished."
If that makes sense, and I hope it does, I think there's a place for both templates.—S Marshall Talk/Cont 23:46, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Request for a new animal userbox

Hello I have decided to create a new Userbox which is why I came here to seek approval this is what the userbox will look like:

This user is fascinated by scorpions.

Please tell me what you think. Thanks. L07ChLeo3 (talk) 21:27, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

I think you should read the bits about userboxes at the top of the page.
I also think you're just a bit scary - --Ludwigs2 22:07, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

So is this a yes or a no? L07ChLeo3 (talk) 11:04, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

neither. this page deals with templates; userboxes have their own page (which you'd know if you read the top of this page, like I asked). And frankly, I'm the only person who will even bother to tell you that, because most everyone else is tired of redirecting people who can't be bothered to read instructions. yeesh. --Ludwigs2 15:37, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Infobox Euroleague Player

Hi, I don't know if this is the correct place, if it's not, please tell me where can I ask for it. I would like to improve the Template:Infobox Euroleague Player by adding the chance to put the height in meters, and the weight in kg, for the reasons explained at the talk page. I tried it, but I failed when I had to change the height and weight parameters to optional paramameters. I undid the changes in order to do not affect all the articles which use this template, but you can check my attempt in the history page. Could somebody help me with it? Thank you. MinorKan (talk) 14:23, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Looks to me like you can, see my code example. chandler · 14:58, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

OK, thank you, I didn't know this option, but anyway, I think that it would be better if you don't have to use any other template to put the height and weight in these units. Just using something like this:

Is it posible? MinorKan (talk) 15:34, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Yes. See convinfobox. JIMp talk·cont 03:46, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

DMOZ Template Leading / Trailing Slash

Resolved
 – decision to let sleeping dogs lie. --Ludwigs2 20:54, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

As [1] shows there are ~ 300 occurrences where the template generates links that are technically working, but not actually valid. When I mentioned the same thing in the german wikipedia (there with the leading slash only) two nice persons modified the template to correct those on the fly.[2]

This is a protected template used in several thousand articles, so apart from me not being able to edit it anyway, I would like somene with more experience than me to do the work.

From the discussion in the german wiki[3], I know that in some type of solution a problem can occur with encoded pathnames like the following, please check that this still works.

Europa-Park at Curlie

Anyone able to help? -- Windharp (talk) 07:56, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

If the links work anyways, why do we need to change the URL? Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:22, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
Because generating invalid links by software is not a good thing. Same like having invalid HTML is bad, even though modern browsers can handle most errors rather well. --Windharp (talk) 07:38, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
first off, thanks for linking to discussion in German. "Könnte man auch über die Vorlagenprogrammierung lösen" right back atcha.
I could request the exact same change that they used on the German Wikipedia, of course, but it's kind of a hack. a much better solution would be to request a bot to take care of this (i.e., have a bot go through all the articles that transclude this template and strip any leading or opening slashes in the first positional parameter). then add something to the documentation to prevent people from adding them in the future. --Ludwigs2 00:55, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
I am not sure if using a robot is the best solution. Modifying the template makes it safe for future usages as well. Considering the number of times it is used, I would say the chance of those slashes placed in the future is rather high. Regardless of any note we could place.
If you decide to use a bot instead it would be fine with me as well, though. Please make sure both leading and trailing slashes are removed in all articles you touch. The template in the english wikipedia automatically adds a trailing slash, while the german one doesn't. That's why trailing slashes wasn't an issue in the german wikipedia. The search query I posted are only those containing a leading slash, most of them having a trailing one, too. If your bot is easily able to find the ones _only_ containing a trailing one, that could be a possible trget as well. -- Windharp (talk) 07:38, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
I brought this up over at the bot place, and the consensus seems to be to let sleeping dogs lie. I updated the doc page, though, to keep it from happening on any more pages. --Ludwigs2 20:54, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Userbox

Resolved
 – --Ludwigs2 20:55, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

I want a Userbox. I'm not sure how to create this. I only want it to state that im a patroller :p ! Coz i'm active on Wikipedia, looking up many articles, improving it. I'm new but i can improve, edit typos and know what is not appropriate. I just learned the rules guidelines etc, after i made my first article and it got closed.

I want to help people, help the community, help Wikipedia and new people.

If i am Not an appropriate Patroller then do you care to elaborate? Give me instructions on how i should be.

Thanks ~Sarathoric (Sarathos was taken! Scumbags! Not you :P)

Excellent! if you read the top of this page, you'll find a link that will tell you all you ever wanted to know (and probably a lot you don't) about finding and creating userboxes. I know there are a few predesigned patroller userboxes over there. --Ludwigs2 21:20, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Gnosticism template help please

Resolved
 – --Ludwigs2 20:59, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Gnosticism, a template I have never edited (and I can not stress this enough), is fundamentally in need of redecorating. My feeble tests have all failed even though I think simply switching a few style bits or something would help exponentially. Would someone please add a border and maybe some contrasting background. I'm also concerned the print is rather small but maybe Gnostics and their supporters all have exceptional vision, so to speak. Any takers? -- Banjeboi 03:24, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

I'll take a look at it, though I'm not really much of a decorator. can you point to a template you like for comparison? --Ludwigs2 04:44, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
EDIT: ok, I converted it to the standard religion format. it's customizable, so if you want to change colors or etc, tell me what you think would work. --Ludwigs2 06:06, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
I'm easy, that was everything I was hoping for. I have absolutely no clue on the subject but I think you've opened the door so others can look to changing it up. It was utterly awful before so many thanks! -- Banjeboi 11:00, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Japanese TV navigational templates

Some user created navigational templates of the Japanese local television stations, something like TV-hokkaido, TV-kanto, TV-kinki and TV-kyushuoki. However, they are, speaking in evil, looks ugly. And for TV-kanto, it is duplicated with Kanto TV. -- JSH-alive talkcontmail 14:09, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

well, ok. these have few transclusions, and should probably all be converted to the style of . I'd do it myself, but I really have no idea what any of it means - it's just random letters to me. if you want to try to put it together using as a model, I'm happy to help with any questions, and with implementing it in the articles. --Ludwigs2 15:23, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
If I was an admin, I would like to delete [[Template:TV-kanto|TV-kanto]. But don't know what should I do with other templates. -- JSH-alive talkcontmail 07:16, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
You don't need to be an admin to nominate a template for deletion. see wp:templates: you just need to find the correct deletion template and add it to the template page.
why don't you explain what these templates mean, in a general way (e.g., what is FNN, NHK, MBS, JAITS?) I can figure out what the prefectures are, and BBC is pretty clear, but the rest is a mystery to me. if you explain it decently, I'll make new (prettier) templates on the lines of Kanto TV and nominate the others for deletion. --Ludwigs2 07:47, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
They're Japanese television stations. Fuji News Network (FNN), NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation/Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai), Mainichi Broadcasting System (MBS), Japanese Association of Independent Television Stations (JAITS). ダイノガイ?!」(Dinoguy1000) 17:49, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
ok, but look at : there is a bunch of information there (regional VHF, prefectural UHF, educational, non-profit) that's not in these templates.
well, at any rate, it looks like these templates were all created by User:Nishi-Kyo; I'll send him a note and ask him to cope with it (since he's up to speed on this), but it looks like Japanese is his primary language. does anyone here speak enough Japanese to follow up with him if I can't get the idea across? --Ludwigs2 18:14, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
I can point you to a few users, if it comes to that. ダイノガイ?!」(Dinoguy1000) 18:25, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
ok. plus, I suppose I could just change the templates myself, and leave it to him and others to correct what I muck up. --Ludwigs2 18:31, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Journals infobox updating

Resolved
 – --Ludwigs2 20:58, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello, I gathered from a comment that this is a good place to bring up issues of existing templates. Some Infobox Journal params don't seem to work, which I brought up on that template talkpage, here. I think that's a pretty low-traffic page though, so I'm linking it here. If anybody is able to fix the issues that'd be great, as I'm not (technically) able to myself! –Whitehorse1 19:09, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

I can look into it. however, it seems to me that in standard citation format, publisher and country usually go on the same line; the only reason it line-breaks in the demo version is because of the length of the names of the parameters. the jstor issue might be more relevant, but I have a hard time believing that jstor changed their system of reference completely; that would have the potential to muck up all sorts of academic references, which would be a quick and easy way of shooting themselves in the foot. --Ludwigs2 20:26, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
ok, I've responded over at the talk page. --Ludwigs2 20:51, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
Awesome, thank you. I'll reply there. –Whitehorse1 20:56, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Software Discontinued

There should be a template that says the software has been or will be discontinued. Ideally, it would say something like "This article documents software that was discontinued in March 2009." or "This article documents software that is to be discontinued in October 2009." I would like this template for certain microsoft software...most notably Encarta.Smallman12q (talk) 19:56, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

do you want a separate template, or an extra parameter added to Infobox Software? --Ludwigs2 20:06, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
I whipped up an ambox. Not sure if this is what you meant but check it out:
First is no parameter, second is with the first parameter, third is with the "to_be" parameter. --Yarnalgo talk to me 21:03, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
Perfect. Could you move it to main template space? Smallman12q (talk) 23:41, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
Sure. Got a name picked out? --Yarnalgo talk to me 23:53, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
Whoa, guys. I still think it might be better to add this as a parameter to Infobox Software, for the following reasons:
  • it would take up less space, and be less prominent (this is not information that we need to blast at the reader).
  • it would keep template sprawl down - no need for a second template here when we can modify the first.
  • it would be easier for users, who would see the parameter when they add the infobox template, and not have to go hunting for another.
at any rate, I'll request the changes to infobox template: we can compare the two versions. --Ludwigs2 00:27, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
My only suggestion is that the template automatically calculate if it is to be or has been discontinued based on the date provided(I'm quite sure the function exists to compare dates). Well, if you could add it Ludwigs, I'd appreciate it. My only other concern would be that it may affect current templates then.Smallman12q (talk) 00:50, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

here's a mockup of what it would look like with a 'discontinued' parameter. I can add some CSS to give it a red border or background, if you think it needs more attention. it's a very simple change - just turns the words 'Latest release' into the word 'Discontinued' - so it shouldn't create any issues on other pages. --Ludwigs2 01:01, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
Adding it to the infobox is good, but I would still like a template to slap onto the articles. It would make it more "obvious" so to speak.Smallman12q (talk) 20:24, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
But why does it need to be obvious? I think I would nominate this template for deletion in a heartbeat. Calliopejen1 (talk) 01:49, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
maybe I should write a template that slaps a big red circle-with-bar across the entire article? or better, a bloody dagger sticking out of the infobox, and dripping down the right border of the page... --Ludwigs2 04:56, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
I went ahead and made an edit request for this change. --Ludwigs2 15:52, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
While I see you that you may have a condescending POV, there is currently a template for beta software beta. Isn't a software that is going to be discontinued also deserving of a template?Smallman12q (talk) 19:45, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
please don't confuse humor for condescension - I'd love a wikipedia that would allow a bloody dagger template like that. make the place a little less stuffy. that being said, though, if you examine beta you'll see that it adds a table row to a bigger table - it is not a stand-alone ambox like the one above. I can not think of a case on wikipedia where a content item was deemed sufficiently important to have it's own ambox that way (except for infoboxes themselves, but those are always rather subdued in appearance). it's a style issue, more than anything else; wikipedia goes for a conservative, understated look.

Indonesianmusic help please

Another can you pretty it up request. Indonesianmusic seems in need of a solid border of some sort but any change is likely a good one. Any help appreciated. -- Banjeboi 10:31, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

this will take a bit more work. really what's needed here is a 'music of...' infobox, which doesn't exist, so I'll probably make one. give me a day or so. --Ludwigs2 14:03, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
I've started work on it here - Infobox music of - if anyone wants to play with it. some things (like the Timeline and Samples sections) need to have link options added, and any styling input would be useful. --Ludwigs2 17:47, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
ok, there's a mockup on the template page above - still not ready for distribution, but I could use comments on style issues, things that are missing, things that need to be restructured, etc.
The "Music of" should be a part of the box and it would be nice if it has a background color and small but contrasting colour border. -- Banjeboi 16:07, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
well, ok. the first is done, and the second is done to the best of my abilities (I have a great ear for music, but a lousy eye for color, at least from scratch). if you can be more specific (even to the point of using online resources to give me hex values for colors), it's very easy to change. and really, the CSS on the infobox template is versatile - if you can imagine it (and communicate it) I can probably make it happen. --Ludwigs2 17:20, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
OMG! That's already so much better! I tweaked the color. -- Banjeboi 02:48, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
  • Comment. Category:Music by region templates, about 40 as of yet. -- Banjeboi 02:52, 24 April 2009 (UTC)
    • yeah, I noticed. I actually made a template - convert template - that you can put on the template page to notify people that a template needs to be converted to this (or some other) standardized format. I need to make a category for it (which I'll do now), but go ahead and add that template to any 'music of' template that needs to be switched over, and we'll fix them as we have the chance. --Ludwigs2 04:07, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Something like Template:Location map, with a different projection.

Template:Location map helps make easy-to-generate locator maps for infoboxes. See, e.g. Phnom Penh. However, it uses only an equirectangular projection, which is pretty crappy for locations near the poles. I've noticed that the Alaska map is pretty atrocious. See the shape of Alaska in the Nome, Alaska infobox and compare it to the (more accurate) shape of Alaska in the Fairbanks infobox. Is there someone clever with math who can make an equation for a non-equirectangular projection (I know basically nothing about this topic so I can't suggest a better one) to create some alternative, non-horribly-skewed map for infoboxes of places like Alaska? Thanks! Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:22, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

ifparadef testing

In the wee hours of the morning, I created the template ifparadef, which can detect if a parameter has been defined, and if it's empty (or contains only whitespace) or not. However, even after a couple hours of sleep, I still can't quite wrap my head around all the transclusion logic necessary to fully understand its actual behaviour, so I'm still not quite sure if it will behave as it should (as described in the documentation). Happy-melon seems to have reviewed it already, which puts me somewhat more at ease, but I'd still appreciate more second opinions from other template mastaz (preferably those with a full night's sleep under their belt =D ). Anyone up to testing the crap out of it? ···「ダイノガイ千?!? Talk to Dinoguy1000 19:55, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

All right, after a full night of sleep, I spent some time properly testing and debugging the template, and its behavior is now satisfactory and it has been successfully deployed on Infobox animanga character, to test for bad parameter names and add a maintenance category if they are used. Some notes: it is not intended to be used directly on articles and other "top-level" content, and will probably not work correctly if it is used in that manner; it has not been tested with two or more levels between itself and the top-level content (e.g. ifparadef transcluded into yourtemplatehere, which is transcluded into anotherrandomtemplate, which is transcluded into Some random article); and it has not been tested with unnamed (numbered) parameters. Once again, anyone willing to take a look and/or suggest places where it can be used (or just implement it in such places)? --Dinoguy1000 (talk · contribs) as 66.116.12.126 (talk) 04:59, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Rescue help please

This template is focussed on AfD'd articles and we use the coding from find to encourage editors to search for sources. I'd like to add a "find=" paramater so we can specify a more accurate search string when the article title is less than helpful. For instance article John Foo could be modified witha search parameter "find=John Foo physicist" to weed out less helpful results, etc. Any help appreciated. -- Banjeboi 22:55, 25 May 2009 (UTC)

I think the template had such a feature until the 3 April when it was removed (diff). — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 06:53, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure I disagree with that. Both versions, as far as I can tell though are just find template with neither offering the route of specifying a "find" parameter. Any way we can make that happen is fine with me. -- Banjeboi 16:40, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
OK, I tried reverting back to the old version and that didn't do anything. Any ideas? -- Banjeboi 13:23, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Request for new case law drop down box

Hi everyone. I don't know how to do it myself, and so I'm asking here. I'd be super grateful if someone could help. I'm after a simple template, something like this:

Political history of the Roman military

I want it to be on the right hand side. Closed at first, but when you click "show" to reveal a list of legal cases, which would be one below the other. So you click it, it would show for instance,

Preferably the standard light blue colour would be best. The heading of the box could be things like "Leading cases on consideration" or "estoppel" or something. If anybody could do this (I'm sure the experts can whip this up in a flash!) then it'd be superb. Please let me know. Wikidea 00:15, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Just to add one thing, I expect that if I want templates with different lists, that's a new template. But if some cool individual would just make one for me, then I can easily replicate more myself. Just don't know the codey stuff. Wikidea 00:19, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

I made a rough first draft. Tell me what you think and any improvements I can make. When its done I'll turn it into a generic template so that you can use it for different instances.--Yarnalgo talk to me 03:08, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Yarnalgo, you're a champion; but can I ask another thing: can it be on the right hand side of the page? In fact, is there a field you can add so that an editor chooses which side it goes? Wikidea 08:55, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Another thing, when I type out the title as you see it now, it seems there is a lot of space, but the title still goes to two lines. Is that unavoidable? Wikidea 08:57, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Btw, it's great how each line has alternative colours! (or shades of grey) Wikidea 08:58, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Isn't it already on the right side of the page? I'll add a parameter so that it can be chosen. About the two lines of text, it goes to two lines because it is being formatted to be centered. At right is what it would look like if it was forced to be on one line and as you can see it is off-center. Which way would you like it? --Yarnalgo talk to me 21:44, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Hmmmm, both those boxes here show up for me in the centre. I've got an Apple, so I don't know if that's my fault. But the military one I gave as an example does appear on the right. Otherwise it's fine, but it can't be in the centre. Wikidea 23:14, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
That is weird. It might have to do with your browser if you are using an old browser (it would have nothing to do with you having a mac), but I can assure you that it is configured to show up on the side and should for everyone (again, not sure why it's not for you). Also, any comment on the title being in one line or two? --Yarnalgo talk to me 01:50, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
PS Do you have a preferred name for the template? I'll make it a real template so you can start using it. --Yarnalgo talk to me 01:53, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

So I made a version that I'm 98% sure will be on the right for you. The only problem is that the title is even more messed up. You can trust me that it is showing up on the right or we can use something like this. Tell me what you think. --Yarnalgo talk to me 08:03, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

That's working properly now for me so far as alignment goes. Could you make the font in the box smaller again? The title is actually not so much of a problem (I'll just have shorter titles). Could you call the first one "Template:Casebox"....
... you know what, I just thought "how about "Template:Caselist" instead, and I find that something's already there. Some good person fixed up one I attempted to make before. But trouble is that it doesn't seem to allow multiple cases, or many lines. I'm sorry if I'm putting you to all this fuss, I just should've referred to that one to start! Oh, I've just been tampering and I think I've figured it out. Here's an example.
But it will still be very good to have one on its own template page (so that I don't have to take up space on every page each time). Could you put one up with the "Template:Casebox" name? Thanks for your patience with me! Wikidea 08:40, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

That's great that you found that. Makes our job a lot easier . But why do you want a separate template? What's wrong with that one and how would a separate one be different? --Yarnalgo talk to me 22:34, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

I mean so that I can just paste a template link like "Casebox consideration" into multiple articles, and not clutter up the page with the list of cases each time (I'm going to have some drop downs with a considerable number of cases!). Wikidea 22:41, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
Is it possible to put the code of the one above into a template page of its own, and then replicate those? Wikidea 22:49, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

Not sure what your asking with the second question but to create a specific template you would just put the caselist code into a new template as you said. I could do it for you but it's very easy. (Also, I figured out why it wasn't showing up on the side for you). --Yarnalgo talk to me 22:58, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

Please do! All I mean (and you could use the above listed cases as an example) is that when you paste the template into an article, it automatically comes with those cases. So to change the cases the template shows, you'd need to change the template itself, rather than to change the cases listed in the article. If you do that I think we're done! Wikidea 23:54, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
And don't know what you figured out, but at the computers at work (PCs) all the caseboxes on this page show up on the right. But now back at home (with a mac) the second and third ones (that you created) show up in the middle (the first military one and the fourth and fifth are on the right). So maybe just work with that last one to save problems? Wikidea 23:56, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

I don't know what specific cases you want or what you want for the names of the templates so I'll let you create them. All you have to do is go to the template page (like Template:Casebox consideration) and paste the caselist code (exactly what you wrote for the last one on this page). Then to put it in an article, you would put in Casebox consideration just like normal. If you want to give me a list of titles/cases I can make them for you but you should learn so you can do it in the future on your own. --Yarnalgo talk to me 00:45, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

New templates or inlines.

I wanted to suggest to the management of Wikipedia to add one message template and one inline tag.

  1. Firstly, I have encountered many articles with the forms of "you" (e.g. your, yours, etc.), as though these pages are addressing the reader directly. I find this unacceptable, because these forms would also write the article like a set of instructions, while Wikipedia is understandably an online encyclopedia with neutral perspectives. Therefore, I wanted to request such message template urging users to remove the forms of "you".
  2. I fathom how weasel words can compromise an article's accuracy and neutrality. So, while I tagged a section for this issue, I stumble upon an idea of adding the inline template labeled , to question the article's sense of location, direction, etc.

--Nebula2357 (talk) 00:42, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Templates already exist for both of your needs. For the first one you can use (or leave the second parameter blank if you do not want to be specific. This produces:
And for the second, there is where which produces [where?]. --Yarnalgo talk to me 04:41, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Request for a Coastal settlements navigation template

Now that the WP:Categories of the form 'Coastal settlements in ... ' are being used regularly then this suggests that a 'Coastal settlement' navbox would prove useful. Does such a template already exist for this need? If it does not exist then read on.

Proposed structure:

  • coast: Wiki link to "List of coastal settlements in ... " or "Category:Coastal settlements in ... " article if it exists.
  • place: county or suitably large administrative body containing the settlement, and that matches 'structure' above
  • settlement: Name of settlement
  • anticlockwise: Name of the next settlement anticlockwise round the coast
  • clockwise: Name of the next settlement clockwise round the coast

example:

At some point the linked pages might be in the next county or event country, but that would not be a problem. This template would apply equally well to a lake or inland sea. These navboxes when complete would form circular lists. Stuffed cat (talk) 17:32, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Well I got this far - now wahat?

{{Navbox

|navbar = {{#if:{}||plain|}}
|list1 = <table width="100%"><tr>
<td width="33%">{Anticlockwise}<br />{ }</td>
<td width="34%" style="border-left:1px solid #aaaaaa;border-right:1px solid #aaaaaa;">{ }</td>
<td width="33%">{Clockwise}<br />{ }
</td>
</tr></table>
}}<noinclude>

Request for a maintenance template for hard-to-expand articles

I try at times to contribute to less edited corners of Wikipedia. Articles tagged with expand are one source of such articles. Every once in a while I run into an article that has already briefly established the subject's notability but is nevertheless hard to expand, at least hard to do so using Google and other search engines. To save a future editor the trouble of going through what I did, I'd like a maintenance template that basically says something like the following:

As far as I know, no such template exists. Thanks. 66.167.48.132 (talk) 20:04, 29 June 2009 (UTC).

Birth year and age based on age as of a specified date

I request a new date math template. Consider the common case when the only thing you know is that someone was a certain age as of a certain date, e.g. from http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/20/arts/television/20pbs.html?pagewanted=print

Dateline: August 20, 2008
Excerpt: Mr. Savidge, 50, was born to British parents ...

We need a template that producing results just like Birth year and age. The arguments for the example would be:

Based on that information, we know that Mr. Savidge was born in either 1957 or 1958. We also know that (in 2008) his age is 49/50 (between January 1 and August 19), and 50/51 (between August 20 and December 31).

As far as I know, we don't have a template for this (correct me if I'm wrong). Thanks. 67.100.126.76 (talk) 22:47, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
P.S. Feel free to give it a simpler name if you can thing of one.

I'm pretty sure I've got it working in my sandbox (but I don't think it's the most efficient way to do it). Check it out and then I can probably move it to the template namespace.

Produces:

1957 or 1958 (age 66–67)

1957 or 1958 (age 65–66)

1957 or 1958 (age 65–66)

1957 or 1958 (age 65–66)

1957 or 1958 (age 65–66)

The middle one shows up as one age because it is the current date. Tell me what you think. --Yarnalgo talk to me 19:41, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Alternatively (coming from soneone with *no* experience in this stuff), you could simply use one of the other date formatting templates to give an approximate date, then provide a parenthetical with the exact age as-of date, with a source (e.g. 45 (43 as of January 1, 2007[ref])). ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 22:18, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
I tried about a dozen dates, changing the year, month, day parameters, with month and day being before current month/day, after current month day, and on current month day. With reasonable arguments it seems to work, including some experiments with leap years. It could be improved by some sanity checking, e.g. you could detect obvious cases of getting the month and day in the wrong order (i.e. month must be 1-12, day must be 1-31)—perhaps there's something you can reuse that does that already within the template world. It allows for future dates, and I guess some future dates might be reasonable, e.g. a website releases an article on the web before they publish it in print, so I don't know what to suggest about that. I didn't test dual dating, so I'd suggest checking with other date/time template programmers as to what to do with dates where that is an issue. IMHO just document any limitations you want in this regard. Thanks. 67.100.125.152 (talk) 06:38, 8 August 2009 (UTC) (previously editing as 67.100.126.76)

For the "sanity check", none of the other birth/death date templates have a check like this and we shouldn't really assume they'll be mixed up. (See the note on Age: "Note: This template does not check for incorrect input"). I'm adding support for the month to be named, either abbreviated or in full, so that "august" and "aug" will also work. It might me easier to just use the month abbreviations in the documentation so that there is less of a chance they'll be mixed up. As far as dual dating, I can't find any support for it in the other birth/death date templates so I'm not sure what to do about it. I'm not sure how big an issue it is and if it is necessary to add support or not.--Yarnalgo talk to me 23:12, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

PS Just an example, produces "1957 or 1958 (age 65–66)" --Yarnalgo talk to me 23:17, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
Sounds good. As far as I'm concerned it's ready for use. The name I suggest is Birth based on age as of date. I'll change Martin Savidge to use it and help with the doc page once the template is in place. Thanks again. 67.100.127.135 (talk) 06:09, 10 August 2009 (UTC).

"Article is a part of discussion about interlanguage link conflicts" template

It's needed to create template (supposed name "iwiki-conflict") which renders to message box with message that article's interwikies produces conflicts. Additional parameter required - name with subpage of Interwiki synchronization page for producing corresponding link to it in template output. I think it have same importance as, for example, "This article is an orphan", "This article may need to be wikified" and other. Interwiki synchronization have very little attention from wikipedians because most of them not even know about it existence. If we set template on article, problem can be solved very quickly, but not if in talk page. DixonD (talk) 11:25, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Cite Video Game template

The template needs some new fields added to it. It is currently lacking a lot core ones. here is the basic discussion. More info of what's needed can be found at template talk:cite video game, but not everything there is needed (offhand i know issue and volume aren't needed). Also we need something like print=preoder/1st or 1stprint=yes - for print run editions as 1st print runs/preorders in a number of cases for video games contain special/exclusive content. This is not the same as version which tells the software's version. We may also want chapter as several games are formated/released as such. This would be in addition to level. If you registered an account, you could do this by creating a user CSS with the following code:
#p-logo, #p-navigation, #p-search, #p-interaction, #p-tb, #p-coll-create_a_book { display: none }
#p-cactions { left: 0 }
#content { margin-left: 0 }

Alternatively (but still requiring an account), it should be almost-trivial for someone to write a script allowing you to collapse the sidebar with one click (or to have it collapsed by default). InterTransWiki templates

There's no template to request an article be transwikied to a Wikipedia in a different language. Many non-English articles seem to be created on English Wikipedia, when they should be created in some other language. But for GFDL reasons, a simple copy and paste is inappropriate, so there should be a way to request a transwiki to another language, like we already have for other Wikimedia Foundation projects (ie. Copy to wiktionary , Copy to wikibooks , etc - For English)

It also would be useful to adapt the transwiki templates for other Wikimedia Foundation projects to support selecting a target language. (for non-English articles that should be on say... German Wiktionary)

76.66.197.2 (talk) 12:01, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

If an article on the English Wikipedia is written in a language other than English you should tag it with Not English. This template supports the specification of what language the article is written in; see WP:PNT for more info. If there is an article on the English Wikipedia that you would like translated into a different language the procedure is to go to that language's page for translation (for example, on the German Wikipedia it is Wikipedia:Übersetzungen). --Yarnalgo talk to me 03:45, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Neither of those is what I was talking about. notenglish raison d'etre is to translate a non-English article into English, not to copy the article to a non-English Wikipedia. I'm not talking about translation at all. If article X is written in language Y on the English Wikipedia, language Y not being English, a template to request that article be transwikied to Y's Wikipedia would be useful, since transwiki will preserve the edit history of the article, which would be lost if a copy-and-paste-move were done to transfer the page to the non-English version of Wikipedia. A copy-and-paste-move would violate GFDL, were the version on English Wikipedia be deleted, since it would in effect be a cut-and-paste-move with no attribution history, and many non-English articles on English Wikipedia get deleted for want of translators.
If a dictionary defintion is written in English on English Wikipedia, I'd put a copy to wiktionary onto it, but what if the dictionary definition is written in Spanish, but is on English Wikipedia? This transwiki template does NOT take a language parameter.

I think I understand what you mean. How is this:

InterTransWiki

You can change the parameter to whatever language you need. I'm not familiar with the policy for this sort of transwiki so it might be missing some things. Jkasd 08:06, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Misuse of WQA Template needed

I have been ptrolling WP:WQA for quite a while now and we regularly receive filings that have no business at WQA, such as forum shopping or often merely frivolous or unfounded allegations (which are themselves a violation of WP:CIVIL). We need a "Misuse of of WQA" template, preferably with a strongly angry-looking graphic since it represents a serious breach of civility. Existing templates are at Wikipedia:Wikiquette alerts/Volunteer instructions. Comments and help welcome! Thanks, Eusebeus (talk) 14:18, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

that would be easy enough to make, but I'm not sure it would be wise. it would amount to a punitive template. I think it would be better to use the NWQA template with a parameter, e.g. unfounded entry »»»
Not a Wikiquette issue, referred elsewhere

Random article in category

I'd like to see a template that generates a link to a "Random article in this category". It might include a small pair-of-dice icon. There is a Wikimedia tool http://toolserver.org/%7Eerwin85/randomarticle.php that would do most of the work, but I'd like an easier to use template that could be simply inserted on housekeeping category pages. I set up one link using the tool at Category:Unreferenced BLPs, but I think other backlog categories and stub categories need such links and could benefit from such a template. The level of depth should be a parameter, defaulting to one. Making it easier and more fun to do mainenance is in Wikipedia's best interest.--agr (talk) 21:14, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Done. I created Random page in category and replaced your link on Category:Unreferenced BLPs with it. Svick (talk) 22:39, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the fast response. I've added it to a few more WP:Backlog categories to see how it goes. One nit, you might mention the default and maximum (<10) for the level parameter in the template documentation.--agr (talk) 01:37, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
I added the mention of the maximum depth (it seems it is at most 10, not less than 10). The default was already there – it's only the specified category. Also, the documentation isn't mine, so you can (and possibly should) edit it yourself, if you know how to make it better. Svick (talk) 02:21, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
"Anyone can edit" applies here too--who knew? :) Anyway, thanks again for your help.--agr (talk) 03:02, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
I added a check so that if no category is specified and it is not on a category page it will cause an error message. For example, if I place it on this page with no parameters it produces:

Error: A category needs to be specified or this template needs to be placed on a category page

You can change the message if you want to word it a different way. --Yarnalgo talk to me 20:34, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

I tried to add an anchor to the link ([4]) and it worked. Should I add this option to the template? Svick (talk) 21:14, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
I don't think it did. Following the link only leads to the top of the article for me. Intelligentsium 21:26, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
Hm, I thought that different browsers might handle the redirect differently, but it works for me in both Firefox and IE 8. What browser do you use? Did the article you were send to have section called “References” (that's what I used in the example above)? Svick (talk) 21:32, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Navbox for airlines of the United States

I thought this up when I saw the navbox for "Airlines of Belgium" and thought it'd be a nice addition for the airlines listed in the navbox. Also, if possible, could anyone make sure that this navbox (if this request is accepted) gets on the pages for the respective airlines listed? If any airlines are missing, please add them. Thanks in advance.

Such navbox already exists: Template:Airlines of the United States. Also, this page is meant to request that someone creates a template for you, if you don't know how (you apparently do). If similar template didn't already exist, you could've created the template yourself, you don't have to ask permission for that. Svick (talk) 00:12, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Infobox UK University Rankings

Currently UK university pages have huge, unwieldy and usually incomplete rankings wikitables on them ( for example see University of Bristol) - In contrast american Universities have the nice and simple Template:Infobox_US_university_ranking could a similar template be produced for UK universities using the rankings used in the wikitables on any UK university article? - Thanks Ajbpearce (talk) 18:44, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

The short answer is yes. I can whip up a template for that, but I have the following questions:
  • do you want it to retain the current table format that we see, or do you want it to mimic the sidebar structure that the American university template has?
  • if the latter, would there be any objection to building one rankings template for universities in general? I could just adapt the American template to include British rankers (yes, that's an 'r', not a 'w') as well. --Ludwigs2 20:28, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

I think the american sidebar format looks much nicer and just because the data exists, it does not really add anything to the articles to include the past 10 years of university rankings for each university - as to whether we just build one template or two separate ones, my only thought is that the syntax is already quite long for the US template and there are really only the few international rankings that overlap so it might be less confusing if they were separate, though its no big deal either way Ajbpearce (talk) 10:13, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

let me take a look at it. I think I can create a version that incorporates an option for historical ranks as well without to much trouble, so we may be able to have our cake and eat it too. --Ludwigs2 18:28, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Table article ignore

Is there a simple coding, added at the start of a table as special property text, used to make it ignore articles {the, an, a) in alphabetizing? If not, make one. If one exists, tell me. 2J Bäkkvire Maestro Test UR Skill! What I've Done 23:06, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

There is not. The only way to work around this is to use a sortkey. The template SortKey makes this fairly easy. For example in the table cell you would write Free Encyclopedia. It would display as "The Free Encyclopedia" but sort as "Free Encyclopedia". --Yarnalgo talk to me 06:14, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

New template: infobox Government service

Preceding service
  • Imperial Police (1893–1948)

I want to request in creating an infobox template for Government services such as, Indian Police Service, Indian Administrative Service, etc. and other services which are distinct from 'Government agencies'. It will surely apply to many government services throughout the World. Cheers! *Truth* (talk) 12:30, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

What differences would this new infobox have from Infobox Government agency and can we just add missing parameters to that template? --Yarnalgo talk to me 22:56, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
These services which I am talking about are not actually agencies in their own right rather they are bodies to which all officers belong regardless of the agency for whom they work. Therefore, obviously there won't be a chief or an executive for the respective service but would have the senior most officer from that service to a agency as in the case of Director of IB and Chief Secretary of India who are the senior most officers from Indian Police Service and Indian Administrative Service respectively and are appointed in two different agencies. Moreover, these services also have their own separate long history. Similarly there are many other differences between Infobox Government agency and the proposed infobox. I would request that a basic model of this infobox is created, rest I can add, modify and develop accordingly. I am actually familiar with the government services in India but I am positive this infobox would also apply to many other services throughout the world. Regards*Truth* (talk) 06:28, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
What I'm saying is can we just modify Infobox Government agency to work for services also instead of creating a whole new infobox? All parameters in that template are optional so if there is something that applies to agencies but not services you could just not include it. We could also add a service parameter so that if service=yes it will replace "agency" with "service" whenever it appears. We would then also add any fields that you want that it doesn't currently have. If you still want to make a basic model, why don't you create a sandbox in your userspace (i.e. at User:JK-RULZ/sandbox) and work on it there. See Infobox for how to make an infobox. --Yarnalgo talk to me 22:01, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
I personally feel, it would not be appropriate to modify Infobox Government agency as even though 'government service' and 'government agency' are both related, they happen to be 2 distinct models of the government. I am inefficient in contributing a new infobox or for that reason make a major change in an already created infobox, that is the only reason why I had opted to request a new infobox. Nevermind, I'll have to try it again. Thanks anyway. Cheers! *Truth* (talk) 07:31, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

(<-) I'm sorry you feel that way I was honestly trying to help. I've included an example of what Infobox Government agency would look like modified to be used for a service. I can make any changes you want, but if you still think we can't use this I will help you create the new infobox (I see you've created a sandbox at User:JK-RULZ/Sandbox). --Yarnalgo talk to me 22:12, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

Year parameter to

Could we get a year parameter added to currency templates such as ? There is notable inflation within all major currencies, and this should be accounted for in articles. $10 in 1990 is ~$15 today.Smallman12q (talk) 22:14, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

This would be hard because it would require constant updating to account for new inflation. --Yarnalgo talk to me 23:00, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
It wouldn't be that constant...how do you suppose we maintain articles with $ in them? There are plenty of articles in which the cost of something was added years ago...or adding an amount today doesn't adjust for inflation.Smallman12q (talk) 21:25, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
Doing... I'm working on it and then will make the request on the template's talk page. --Yarnalgo talk to me 20:27, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
I got it working calculating the inflation to the nearest cent but then I realized it probably makes more sense to round to the nearest dollar and say about. What do you think? (it is in my sandbox with examples here) --Yarnalgo talk to me 22:04, 24 April 2010 (UTC)
That's pretty good. I was also thinking to have one in which it doesn't say "about $340 in 2010" but rather just shows the corrected amount...(though the about one is useful)...for example amount so 20 would simple show $340. Thanks for making this btw...it's going to be very very very usefulSmallman12q (talk) 11:01, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure what source you're using but some relevant ones are Consumer Price Index, Inflation Conversion Factors for Dollars 1665 to Estimated 2013 (Oregon State), The Annual Consumer Price Index for the United States, 1774 to Present.Smallman12q (talk) 19:07, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

(undent) I was using the BLS inflation calculator. I think I have it done. See the example in my sandbox with the optional parameter about=yes. I'll submit the edit request as soon as I finish making it more accurate. --Yarnalgo talk to me 00:59, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

In big numbers that aren't accounted for to, at least, the 100s place, a feature like this adds significant false precision, something that is VERY deceptive. Just something to note.Riffraffselbow (talk) 13:09, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

Modified nihongo template

Hello! I am looking for a template which works like Template:Nihongo, but puts everything except for the English name (i.e. "Kanji, Rōmaji, extra, extra2) in a footnote instead of displaying it inline. It should be possible to specify the footnote's group parameter as an option in the requested template. This new template would help to un-clutter articles which use many instances of the nihongo-template. (This request goes back to a suggestion in this FLC.) bamse (talk) 20:46, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

I think I have it done.. Tell me what you think. I made it require the 1st (English) parameter but I could also make it function like the original template when there is no English parameter. By default there is no reference group so the footnotes are called by the basic <references /> tag but the group parameter defines a group so that they can be called separate from the rest of the references using <references group="group" />. See the example below (more in my sandbox). --Yarnalgo talk to me 00:41, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Perfect! For consistency it might be nice to make it function like the original template (i.e. not to require the English parameter). However the present version is all I need. Can you move it from user-space to article/template-space? bamse (talk) 13:56, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Hiding excess wikicode during substitution

I have created Cfd nomination as a potential replacement for the four existing Categories for discussion nomination templates: Cfd2, Cfm2, Cfr2 and Cfc2. (FYI: The idea to have a single, consolidated CfD nomination template arose from this discussion.) However, substituting the template would leave behind quite a bit of excess wikicode (see the examples at User:Black Falcon/Sandbox#Result). Is it possible to fix this issue? Thank you, -- Black Falcon (talk) 22:08, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

The #switch is the main concern, which I've fixed by forcing it to substitute as well when the template is substituted. It may be better to safesubst:. Intelligentsium 22:20, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
safesubst: was indeed the correct way to go. Intelligentsium 22:26, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
Thank you! It looks much better. -- Black Falcon (talk) 22:36, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
You could further trim the substituted code by hardcoding "Category {category}" in place of {{Category title|{category}}}, unless you're concerned about editors not reading the documentation and passing Category:<category> through the {category} parameter. 2 new related templates for a visual novel listing page.

I would like to make a sortable wikitable that has column spanning captabilities. A similar template was already setup in 2 parts by Furry-con-list-start and Furry-con-list-entry GreenReaper, however he is unable to help because of RL circumstances. Due to some of the compliexities of this template listing multiple Japanese titles translated into English for various platforms and operating systems that sometimes changed them when translated and the multiple relevant ways one can sort this (Alphanumeric, original japanese release date, original english release date to name the 3 most likely ones) a sortable template with columnspanning is necessary.

I have setup a basic format (minus the sorting mechanism) how I'd like the end result to be at User:Jinnai/VN. The problem I am running into particulary is making the second row header sortable and also sub-divided under the first larger one. Using a basic "wikitable sortable" makes the top header sortable, but not those underneath. In addition, I need the notes section, as mentioned above, to span the entire length. Finally, the "link" header, should also not be sortable.Jinnai 22:11, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

if you read Help:Table#Sorting they explicitly discourage using multiple-line header rows, since that breaks sorting. read that section, and if you can't figure out how to set it up post back and I'll help. --Ludwigs2 01:21, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
Making the headers column spanning is something I'd like, but if its impossible to do, I can live without it. The part of having a notes section that spans the entire wdith is a different matter. It is both possible and a nessesity for this kind of list and I would need help creating what is likely to be a dual-template table structure (based on other tables I've seen).Jinnai 03:43, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
The trick to adding a table-wide notes section is to use hidden sorting-key column, and setting its value to the same value as the preceding row. in effect, the notes row does not span all of the columns, but only the visible columns, and the hidden columns with the same value for the related rows will always sort them together. if you fix up the header column, I'll show you how to do a notes-type row. --Ludwigs2 05:44, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
Headers are now redone.Jinnai 19:49, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
ok, I've added in the code for a sortable template that respects a notes row. I used a row template that you can find at User:Jinnai/VN/row. it's not perfect (for instance, I doubt that the notes row will work consistently across a broad range of window sizes, and you'll probably want to monkey with some of the css), but it gets the idea across. --Ludwigs2 20:58, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
Thanks.

EDIT: Is there a way to hide/collapse the notes row if its blank? If not that's fine.Jinnai 01:22, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

well, you could turn the entire second row of the row template into a conditional row. I can't work on it right now, but maybe over the weekend, unless you figure it out on your own. --Ludwigs2 01:46, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
Not sure how that would work with the current setup. I can understnad with a normal table how it works, but don't know about more advanced one like this.Jinnai 00:47, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
implemented it, and (oddly) is seems to work. go figure. --Ludwigs2 17:58, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Did some testing and I was trying to get the text to wrap like it does in the template I listed above. Unfortunatly my attempts failed. Looking at that example I cannot see how they got it to wrap. Nor could I figure out if there was a way to use overflow:auto that would work if it went beyond the last row (although wrapping would still be preferable). Thanks for helping with such a difficult template.Jinnai 18:44, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

I don't understand the problem - see the long line I added to the template at User:Jinnai/VN#List.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'the table will need to be used multiple times in the list'. in order to get these to work together, you either need to pass the row template as an argument to the table template, or you need to structure the table template as two templates (top and bottom table elements). give me an idea how this is going to be used, and I can structure it either way.
Also, you want to use better naming conventions than this - do you mind if I move them to more effective names? --Ludwigs2 22:27, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
As long as its clear its for English-translated visual novels and not all english visual novels. I don;t want someone mucking the template(s) up for another page because it wasn't clear what it was for.Jinnai 22:36, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
Fixed, and placed at . it's a three part template now, with a top, row, and bottom component. I've filled out the docs on it as well. --Ludwigs2 23:52, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for going through all the trouble with this template.Jinnai 03:01, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Rtd and Rb

The Rtd and Rb templates are used on talk pages to archive discussions where files tagged with di-replaceable fair use were deleted after being tagged with replaceable fair use disputed.

Currently, these templates are not substituted, they don't allow the signature of the closing admin to display properly and, despite the claim at Rtd, does not categorize these talk pages in Category:Talk pages of deleted replaceable fair use images. I've created a subpage here of three example inputs and their outcome, all problematic, as well as a desired outcome. Basically, the end result should substitute both templates, include the admin's signature on the Rtd template and the Rb template should add the aforementioned category to the file talk page.

Hopefully this isn't too complicated of a request. — ξxplicit 22:51, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

There should be no problem with substituting the templates, so nothing was changed in that respect. I (whilst accidentally logged in to my main account) have changed the template to allow closing admin comments (via an unnamed first parameter) which should resolve the signature issue, and to add the page to the appropriate category (NAMESPACE will never output "Image talk"; "Image" is an alias of the "File" namespace). Let me know if there are any other problems. Intelligentsock 23:27, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
Worked out pretty well, thanks! — ξxplicit 02:30, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Template for unwrapped source code

I am adding sample code to an article. in a language for which white space is significant. I can't use <code>...</code> tags because they wrap and justify. I considered using <pre>...</pre> tags, but they turn off Wiki and HTML highlighting. I can't use <source>...</source> because it's an unsupported language. I am looking for a template that will

  • accept a multiline parameter
  • permit bold and italic highlighting within the parameter
  • render the parameter in unwrapped, unjustified monopitch.

Example: I would want

to render as

foo LA R1,BAR
         BAL R14,BAZ

There is one more way to format code on Wikipedia: add a leading space to each line. This preservers whitespace and allows wiki markup:
foo LA R1,BAR
          BAL R14,BAZ
renders as
foo LA R1,BAR
         BAL R14,BAZ
