Bjørnøya[edit]

While I am familiar with the criteria for a quality article, I find it inherently difficult to judge my own work with any degree of neutrality and therefore would like to request review for this article. I am aware that it is rather short; on the other hand it has not been easy to find useful resources on the topic (Google Scholar has a few hundred links, but having looked through many I found them of very limited usefulness). I hope to improve the history section as soon as I receive a Norwegian book on the subject that I have ordered; however as it is unclear how useful it will prove or when it will arrive, I would like to submit the article with the precaution that that section might see some revision and expansion. Being no native English speaker, I would be particularly grateful for concrete suggestions (or edits to the article) with respect to the style of writing. Thanks, Kosebamse 22:31, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I will gladly look over and try to add to/edit this article then. I am fairly knowledgable about the subject of the Arctic in general so . . . I hope I can help. If you know of information in Norwegian, Danish, or Russian point me to that because I read those languages, also.--Mike 03:01, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • It would be a really good idea for you to contact the person who uploded the images and ask them to clarify who owns the copyright, you may have to email them since they don't seem to be active on Wikipedia at the moment. Since all the images are unsourced at the moment they could be deleted.--nixie 13:15, 18 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The photographer appears to have more images on the Commons released under the GFDL, you should tag all the images without tags {{GFDL}}.--nixie 13:22, 18 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The images on the article are all by the same photographer, however some seem to be on Commons and some not. I have contacted him and asked to clarify the copyright situation. Kosebamse 14:39, 18 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Norwegian (Bokmål) Bjørnøya article has some more information, will look into it and translate what seems useful. (done). Also a reference given there (Bjørnøya: historie, natur og forskning. (Tromsø museum, 2004, hefte, 72 s., (temanr av Ottar ; nr 253)) seems interesting, but I doubt it is available outside Norway. Will try to find out more. Yes, I have read that little book (Ottar temahefte nr 253), here is a description Ottar nr 253:Bjørnøya. There are articles describing the 700 lakes, some of them with ..uhmm, it's called sjørøye in Norwegian (arctic char..?), of good size. The bad news, several articles describes toxins (PCB) among the highest concentrations ever found in the Arctic, the char in Ellasjøen (lake) is mentioned as having a lot of toxins.
There are also articles describing the bird colonies with hundreds of thousands of sea birds, and the human history connected to Bjørnøya. Orcaborealis 19:22, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
But that would be highly interesting. The ecology and the environmental problems need mentioning, and the history too. Would be great if if you could add some of that information (and list the book as a reference). I'll write some more about the history as soon as I get my book (this one), by the way. Thank you.
