Summer 2011

As a new and budding young Wikipedian, I'm not quite sure what to make of all the discussion below. Just exactly where and when are we meeting? How about we have a vote on the places that have been talked about thus far, and simply close the voting tonight (Friday, June 24) at 11:59 p.m.? We could just meet at the place and time that has the most votes. Anyone who wants could vote.

As far as I've been able to tell, below I've listed all the places that have been most discussed (please feel free to add ones you want). If this plan sounds good, just cast your vote and comments below Scottmas (12:05, 24 June 2011 (UTC))

Farmers Market in Pioneer Park (300 S 300 W) at 11:00 a.m.
(Vote here)

Aristo's cafe (224 South 1300 East) at 2 p.m. (combined with Reddit)
(Vote here)

Paradise Bakery and Cafe (618 E 400 S) at 4:30 p.m.:

Paradise Bakery and Cafe (618 E 400 S) at 12:30 p.m.:
Scottmas - I like this because it's small, will be easy to meet up, and is later in the day when it's not so blazing hot. I'm okay with anywhere though.
Either this location or the Reddit location, but I can't do this late in the day, as I've got a prior engagement at 6:00-ish. Useight (talk) 19:57, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Does 12:30 p.m. work better for you Useight? I can do essentially anytime. -Scottmas
This works for me. It's a little early but I can live with it. (By the way, Scottmas, if you log in and then sign your comments using four tildes (~~~~), then your signature will time-stamp and link to your talk page instead of BYU's previously-blocked IP. Just a suggestion.) GreenGlass(talk) Thanks Green Glass.
My wiki skills are growing... Scottmas (talk) 06:10, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
Summation: We had a good meet-up with three people attending - myself, Scottmas, and a man whose name I've forgotten. Nice meeting you both, and I hope we can get together again in the future. GreenGlass(talk) 23:38, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
Sorry I was unable to make it. I had an appointment to do some volunteer work in the morning and it went longer than expected. Useight (talk) 03:31, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Meetup, anyone? I'm not sure if Nijonjoe is running the Conduit art show again or not, but maybe something like that in Salt Lake this time? GreenGlass(talk) 02:45, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

What about Salt Lake joining The Great American Wiknic in June?--Pharos (talk) 02:55, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
Wiknic seems like it would be fun. I'll try to show up. Where are we meeting for the Wiknic? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 03:14, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
Yes, we can meet there (art show), or someplace near downtown on this coming Friday or Saturday evening (or even during the day on Saturday). I'd be fine doing the Wiknic in June, too. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:38, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
So, do we want to do the Wiknic, and if so, where? There are many parks in the SLC area. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:43, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
Sorry I wasn't able to make it down for Conduit; I've got a lot going on right now. But yes, let's do the Wiknik. It's Saturday the 25th? I'm fine with any location. GreenGlass(talk) 05:20, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
Someone should just WP:BE BOLD and pick Olympic Cauldron Park or Sugar House Park or something :)--Pharos (talk) 20:55, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
Is there someone up there who can reserve a spot for us at one of the parks? I don't live up there, so I'm less familiar with the parks in SLC. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 06:21, 10 June 2011 (UTC)
Mr. Airomee Wind here. My suggestion? Let's have the Wiknic in Liberty Park on June 25th at 4:30PM. A centrally located event will be more successful. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cimplexsounds (talkcontribs) 16:54, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
Liberty Park in the Eastern side of SLC is not a bad place Either. There is a pond with geese, a small amusement park and plenty of water fun along with a nearby playground for the kids. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.250.46.130 (talkcontribs) 20:43, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
I don't really know the parks in SLC either, though I doubt there will be enough of us to require reserving a spot anyway. Do we necessarily need to picnic? How about one of the cafes downtown, like One World? That way someone can get a full lunch, or just a light salad or even just coffee. Maybe about 1pm? GreenGlass(talk) 22:05, 18 June 2011 (UTC)
Tell me when and where and I'll be there. Useight (talk) 22:13, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

There's a planned reddit meetup at:

Jun 25, 2011 at 2 PM Reservoir Park 1300 east, South temple http://redditgifts.com/meetups/salt-lake-city-orgy/ (That's near the University of Utah.) This could be combined with that, maybe. If you want to meet at a restaurant near there, I'd suggest Aristo's, 2 blocks away. In that case, we might want a way to recognize each other. How about wearing a hat?

Reserving a spot at Sugarhouse Park would not be necessary. If you just want to meet at a restaurant somewhere, well, I could suggest something but I don't know what you guys like. One World Cafe is interesting but I'm not sure it's a good place for a meeting like this.

Since it's a Saturday, maybe meet up at the Farmer's Market, where there are better-than-average food stalls and good coffee. Plenty of greenspace, and if needed, a kiddie playground at a distance. Close-by Facilities. It's nice on Saturdays.

Where is the Farmer's Market held? I've never been to it, but it sounds good to me. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:49, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
Hmm, I should be able to make it to that. Useight (talk) 23:31, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
Pioneer Park, right? Time? Specific place? GreenGlass(talk) 04:29, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
Looks like it: Historic Pioneer Park (300 South & 300 West). It's only open until 1pm, though, and I won't be back in town by that time. I was hoping for something about 3-4pm or so. Perhaps we'll need to meet at a restaurant, then? ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:49, 23 June 2011 (UTC)
I'd prefer an air-conditioned restaurant, cafe, or coffee place, and later in the day. I don't think anyone's bringing kids or a football, so we don't really need a park. Even the library like we've tried before works okay.GreenGlass(talk) 00:46, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
How about Paradise Bakery and Cafe, 618 E 400 S? It's easy to find, and I like their food. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 07:15, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
How safe is Pioneer Park? The last time I was there (admittedly not a Saturday afternoon during the summer) it was a homeless sanctuary where I stepped on the gas deliberately speeding to keep the crowd from chasing me down the street. IMHO that is the armpit of SLC. Close enough to downtown to be useful, but an entirely different world where I certainly wouldn't feel safe if it is anything like I've last remembered. It is a great place to set up a soup kitchen if you are into that thing. I'd suggest another place, but I don't think I can make it this weekend anyway (since I live in Logan). --97.117.68.193 (talk) 01:06, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
I don't think I can make it; I'll probably be at West Haven Days all day. Unless we want to have the meet there? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 13:58, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia Loves Libraries meetup

I came across the page linked in the section title today, and I was thinking we could hold one of these in a Utah library. Since I'm from the Weber County area, the Weber County Library in Ogden would be the best place for me, although since most of you probably live near Salt Lake, the Salt Lake City Public Library will probably be our best bet. Does anybody have any other suggestions? We'll need to decide on a library and a date before October so I can arrange things with the library we choose. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 18:50, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

I'd be cool with that. I'd add the suggestion of Weber State (my personal library of choice) or the U of U. I'm guessing that the best for most however would be the main walking area at the Salt Lake one. GreenGlass(talk) 03:40, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
Both the UofU Library and the downtown SLCPL are easily accessible via Trax, so I'm fine with either one. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 06:29, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
Alright, anybody else have any suggestions? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 15:34, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
Alright, so it looks like we're meeting at the Salt Lake City Public Library then. I'll make all the necessary arrangements. What day do we want to meet? I'd probably be available any Saturday; how about the 8th of October? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 13:06, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
The 8th of October sounds great to me. GreenGlass(talk) 01:10, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
What time are we meeting up? I just double-checked my schedule, and if we do meet on the 8th I can only make it during the evening. If we were to hold it on the 1st or 15th, however, I could make it during the day. I do understand that this isn't just about me, so what does everyone else think? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 01:25, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
I will have to check my schedule to see which of those days will work best for me. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 06:07, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
The first of October's coming up fast. Are we meeting then, or on the 15th? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 20:43, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
The 15th will work best for me. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 04:06, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Either is fine with me, though if it's the 15th it would need to be on the Morning/Early Afternooon side. GreenGlass(talk) 17:25, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Would meeting on the 15th at, say, 11 or 12 o'clock work? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 17:55, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

That'd be fine and dandy like sour candy. In the main walking area where the shops are? GreenGlass(talk) 02:06, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes America/your city

Do we want to go on a shooting spree (that's the photography type, just so no one misunderstands) in Salt Lake City, Ogden, Provo, Orem, and other cities around Utah as part of this? Sounds kinda fun. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 05:02, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Sounds interesting. When and where would we do this? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 04:57, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
We'd have to figure that out. The "Wikipedia Tames America" is an ongoing one through sometime in September. The "Wikipedia Takes Your City" one can be organized at any time (see here). I would suggest a Saturday as that will likely be the easiest for most people, and then perhaps have a length of time where people are just hitting those articles which need photos and uploading them during the campaign. I'm sure there are many articles on locations and buildings which could use photos. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 02:34, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
So it's a photography-based scavenger hunt? Useight's Public Sock (talk) 12:15, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
Sorry for the really slow reply. Yes, an organized scavenger hunt for pictures of very specific things so we can get good pictures of them to upload to Commons. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 03:39, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Just as an idea, I've been looking at the Utah Transit Authority pages and have noticed that very few of the articles about the stations have any pictures. It might be fun to get together as a group of Wikipedians and split up in smaller groups for a little while, take photos of different stations on the different routes, then meet back together afterward for some sort of "party" or "refreshments" and sharing stories about what brought you to Wikipedia. If it is just a small group, we could just sit and visit while traveling from one station to the next, to get out and take a few photos then hop onto the next train to travel on to the next station. We could also stop and take some photos of other nearby buildings and locations along the way. --Robert Horning (talk) 17:42, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Sound interesting. When are you available to do this? Also, we should come up with a list of what kinds of photos we want for each station. Would this include the FrontRunner and Max stations? ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:05, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
I'd say just set a date. Could we do this in about a month? UEA weekend is October 18th-October21st (for those who have kids in the public schools of Utah.... this is also sometimes called "fall break"). It can be a little chilly in SLC at that time of the year, but not too bad and we will have access to the trains to stay warm if necessary or if it is raining. I'd push for a Saturday to do this as my preference, but any time during that weekend would be fine for me.
As for what stations we could hit, it could be either FrontRunner or Trax. So many stations are missing photos that almost any direction and any station would work. I don't know if Max stops except at the Trax station itself qualify as notable though. I'd agree that a list of suggested photos could be set up ahead of time if there is any interest in this concept.
I live in Cache Valley, so I'd likely be taking the Front Runner from Ogden to meet everybody anyway. I'd suggest as a gathering place to meet at the Central station or perhaps on Temple Square. I'm pretty flexible but it should be some place pretty central and convenient for everybody to get at. --Robert Horning (talk) 00:11, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
That weekend won't work for me as I will be at Anime Banzai. I can meet most Saturdays, though. (like today, but not next week as I work) ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 06:28, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
I take it this never happened? Useight's Public Sock (talk) 17:38, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
You take correctly. We can still do this, though, even if it's just several small one in different locations. That may be good to let multiple people get together in the locations closest to them. There are certainly enough places to get pictures of. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 09:16, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

So I was thinking

For any of you who are in the Wasatch Front, I'll be giving a presentation on the history of Utah railroads at Union Station in Ogden on Tuesday, May 14 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. There will be plenty of other people there, but I was thinking we could include a Wiki meetup here. Another Wikipedian has already RSVP'd. Anyone else interested? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 03:32, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

I may be able to come, but I won't know for a couple more weeks. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 16:49, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
