Mumbai Meetup[edit]
Summary[edit]
The Wikipedia Mumbai meetup is a monthly get-together of Wikipedians (contributors and users) and General Public to meet up, discuss, share experiences, reach out and advocate for Wikipedia and Wikimedia. This particular meetup is important as a proposed WikiConference due to be held in Mumbai (November 2011) will be at the top of the agenda.

Intended Audience[edit]
Anyone interested in Wikipedia (user, contributor or curious about it). Wikipedians from any part of India or the world and anyone who is interested in Wikipedia! Meetup is open to members of all Wikimedia projects and Wikipedians from all languages. All are welcome, and we are especially interested in seeing newcomers to join the experienced Wikipedians/Wikimedians. If you are interested in coming, please add your name below.
Getting there[edit]
Nearest railway station is Lower Parel on Western Railway.
It's 10 minutes walking distance from the railway station. If you're coming by bus (Route 70)/taxi you can state your destination as Phoenix Mill.
By Car:
Coming from South Mumbai: Go under the bridge at Phoenix Mills and take the first U-Turn. After Belleza showroom, take a left into Sun Mill Compound.
Coming from North Mumbai: Reach Belleza at Lower Parel, Opposite Phoenix Mills and take a left into Sun Mill Compound
As soon as you get in, take the first left. Then first right. Once the lane is over, take a right again, you should see a huge Amarex board in red. Come upto the Aramex board and take a right. Come all the way to Parvati Premises. Take the lift and walk all the way till the end on the 3rd floor. Last office is 311. Wooden door with yellow lights.

Minutes[edit]
- The meeting was held in the offices graciously provided by new community member Sahil and a member in the WikiConference teams.
- The meeting began at 4:30 pm.
- Eleven (11) people attended the meetup.
- We had a round of introductions of the eleven people.
- After the round of introductions, Hisham Mundol from the Wikimedia Foundation India office provided an update.
- He said that two members were added to office staff - Nitika Tandon and Shiju Alex. Nitika would be working with the Pune Education Program. Shiju will join them in the end of October.
- He said that the Educations Program was successful. They expected 250 students but have now got about 1000 students. They are working on how to manage this larger than expected outcome. One of the things they are considering is having more Campus Ambassadors in Pune.
- The office is also (hopefully) to be registered as a public trust soon.Various options were considered before they reached this decision. They are also looking for premises in the National Capital Region.
- Hisham introduced Nitika Tandon to the members present.
- Nitika provided an update on the India Education Programme.
- She said that she had recently taken up her work at posting in Pune.
- She has also been talking to 2-3 colleges in Pune but they have been taking it slow since they have to manage the current student count.
- Hisham suggested that one of the star students is user:basic.atari who has been great and requested Mumbai community members to send him some wikilove.
- Achal gave a small talk on Oral Citations project. We were (Again) not able to show the video.
- Achal said that the Wikipedia before ~2004 did not have citations and they grew as the Wikipedia project grew over the years.
- He said citations currently was currently done from the publications industry which has stronger and wider presence in European and North American countries.
- This combined with the limitations on what are rules on what could get cited, could be one of the reasons for decrease in the growth of new editors on Wikipedia.
- The limitation on citation and deletion of articles without good citations turned off new Wikipedia users and also took away some of the revolutionary ideas around which Wikipedia was born. Other form of citations were thus to be considered.

- The meeting was concluded at 6 pm.
