@Kirill Borisenko: A draft for you to check. Without any knowledge more than common sense I have made a variation of the original image. You have to tell me what to change and how/why, we can put in numbers in the illustration if you want or something else. Give me feedback, anything goes, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 20:01, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The background should be transparent. If you have the background of Wikipedia set to a personalized color other than white, there's a big white square whenever this is used. -- 67.70.34.54 (talk) 06:57, 15 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not done @AntiCompositeNumber: This is a mask for flags, so the white background can't be removed. User: Perhelion 02:49, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah - that explains why, when I briefly glanced at this, I was surprised at the partial transparency in the actual "ball". As a mask that makes perfect sense. (I guess the "clue" was in the filename, if I'd bothered to think about it - duh...) -- Begoon 03:24, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Alrighty then. IP, if you need this file without the background for something, drop a note here and we'll create a derivative work. @Perhelion: Your ping didn't work, by the way. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 03:16, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I extended the file-description and I'll add now an example too. @AntiCompositeNumber: Ah yes, I removed the source code comment, so the ping seems not work on removed lines (even if they are invisible). User: Perhelion 03:53, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Interestingly, though - the example you added displays the "white box problem" on the infobox background on the file description page. Ideally that would be avoided. Could a clipping mask help, or is that problematic with the "shadows"? -- Begoon 04:15, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
We could add a switch element in the SVG for another background-color!? Then the same mask can be used for different backgrounds. But dynamically it is still not possbile (on MediaWiki, but in general on HTML5 with SVG I mean yes). User: Perhelion 04:32, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've never played with overlaying svgs in html like that example does to see if there's a way to "negate" the bottom one via the top one rather than just blank it to a colour, so I'm going to mess around with it - probably a fool's errand which won't work on mediawiki, but I'm interested now... The "show-stopper" in mediawiki will be the png rendering of the svg I think. -- Begoon 04:39, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Update: Well, I tried, using tricks like css contained in the svg and values like "inherit", "initial", "currentColor" for the fill on the rect element, but no joy, since, I believe, at the time when rsvg renders its png it doesn't have these page specific values available to "inherit" no matter how one tries to manipulate them. As you say, it could work in pure HTML/SVG but that's not how mediawiki does it - so that's no use. -- Begoon 06:27, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So, how is the problem to be fixed with Template: Mexico-sport-bio-stub ? Clearly, the background of the stub-type-template image should be transparent. -- 70.52.10.192 (talk) 06:00, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, short of creating a new image for every single template, the only idea I had was making the ball smaller than the flag: something like this. That would still require an edit to the template(s), and isn't going to work very well visually for every flag either. In fact, it's probably a horrible idea, for which you'd never get consensus, but unless the result can somehow be made rectangular (or someone creates dozens of new images) the "issue" will persist for those who choose a non-standard background colour. -- Begoon 07:35, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
This is what's happening here. Template:Mexico-sport-bio-stub contains {{Soccer icon|Mexico|50}} which expands to
<span style="vertical-align: middle; background:transparent">[[Image:Flag of Mexico.svg|50x50px|alt=Flag of Mexico]]<span style="margin-left:-50px;">[[Image:Soccerball mask.svg|50px|alt=Soccer icon]]</span></span>
which displays like this: Flag of MexicoSoccer icon This has the appearance of a single image, but you will see from the code that two images are used to make it.
Separating out those images Flag of MexicoSoccer icon shows that the white background around the outside of the ball is necessary to mask off the outer portion of the flag.
If we put both images on a strongly-contrasting background:
Flag of MexicoSoccer icon
the size and transparency of the images becomes clearer.
We could flip the transparency of the ball from inside to outside by using File:Soccerball.svg which could produce Flag of MexicoSoccer icon which is not ideal. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:54, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Or, you could adjust the sizes/offsets in this: yellow div background for clarity of what's happening:
Flag of MexicoSoccer icon
(perhaps better with more opacity in the ball.) Here with no yellow div background: Flag of MexicoSoccer icon
That's similar to what I already linked in my sandbox above, except that there I made the ball smaller, contained within the flag rectangle. The big problem with this is that it may not look very good with different flags (ones which are dark in the middle etc...) -- Begoon 10:30, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request to make text editable on Endocrine image

Can the text in the image be made into editable text?
It is because I want to edit the following: (1) change the hyphen between "Atrial" and "natriuretic" into a simple space in both instances, and (2) change the 2nd "Atrial" into "Brain". So it reads "Atrial natriuretc peptide (next line) Brain natriuretic peptide". -- Treetear (talk) 13:36, 25 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Proper motion

Article(s)
Proper motion
Request

The first image (a) is technically crappy, but conceptually correct, which makes hard to understand what is going on. The request is to recreate the image from scratch, and make it less visually cluttered, with proper vector rendering (and no ugly white boxes). Specifically

  1. Make the image bigger in general. Or rather get rid of the useless empty space. Reducing the length of the arrow would allow the image to be squarer and more visually pleasing. It should however still be longer than the arrow.
  2. Move and on the inside of their circles, rather than on the circle line
  3. The blue dotted line should be a proper cross section of a sphere, not an offset section of circle. It should also go from black line to black line
  4. The blue solid line that goes from the red dotted line to the blue dot should be parallel to the line of intersection between the two shaded blue semi circles.
  5. Add a CSP point at the bottom of the sphere, to match the CNP point at the top
  6. Make sure the and arrows are parallel to each other
  7. Make sure the and arrows are perpendicular to each other
  8. Put the in red to match its corresponding arrow
  9. Change the center of the sphere to a yellow dot, rather than red, to indicate the Sun

and for the second image (b)

  1. SVG-ize things in general [pretty sure most of the problems are obvious here]
  2. Replace the blue 'mess' with a proper star

@Headbomb: Draft to check. The view point is different from what the old version is. If this is a problem just tell me and I will make another version, feedGoran tek-en (talk) 14:41, 21 February 2018 (UTC)back, thanks. --[reply]

@Goran tek-en: that looks better, however

  • the µα / µαcosδ arrows should be tangential to the dotted circle / equatorial circles
  • the µδ arrow should be tangential to the δ semicircle that runs from CSP to CNP and at 90° from a line that you would draw from the yellow dot to blue dot (no need to actually draw that line though)
  • the blue line from the center of the sphere to the dotted circle isn't at the same angle as the intersection line of the α/δ semicircles
  • the originally color scheme with thicker lines would be best; it offer better contrast and would be easier to see at smaller scales

Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 14:59, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Headbomb: Two versions; Draft 1 and Draft 2, feedback. --Goran tek-en (talk) 16:47, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Goran tek-en: Draft1 is better in general. It has the correct angle for the µα / µαcosδ, but the µδ arrow is off in both drafts (Draft 2 is better, but the arrow is still not tangential to the semicircle it's touching).
@Headbomb: I'm sorry but I can't really see exactly how it should be. In this draft I have put a thin dashed horisontal line (just to have referens) and the arrow 1 is angled upwards from it as it should to my knowledge. Arrows 2 and 3 are angled even more but looks wrong to me. Could you please explain how it should be angled or draw in an image, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 20:04, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Goran tek-en: See [1]. You can imagine putting an invisible glass pane against the sphere at the point of contact. The arrows should live on the surface of the glass pane. The way your arrows are drawn, the glass pane would intersect the inside of the sphere. Using that one as a basis

  • The µαcosδ / µδ are the equivalent of the u- and v- arrows on that picture (the unequal length is fine though). Ignore the w-axis, we don't care about that one.
  • You can imagine bringing the (λ,φ) point of contact down to the "equator" of the sphere, following the circle line aligned with the v-axis. The µα arrow would be equivalent to where the u-arrow would be in that situation.

Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 20:33, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Here's a terrible mockup in paint. Faint red/faint blue are dotted lines. Deep red/blue are solid arrows. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 21:08, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Headbomb: Thanks for really trying to make me understand. I have now started over with the same view point as the "original" as you said it was correct. Even then I do have some things I don't really understand or wants confirmed, I write them here numbered. Numbers can be found in numbered version.
1 You wrote before that this two lines should have the same angel, I have changed the blue.
2 Those are parallel but is it correct where 2 is encircled?
3 The angle here is right-angled between the two red arrows, but I'm not sure if it should be that in a perspective like this. The µδ is more to the left due to this (right-angle) compared to the "original". Also is this correct where 3 is encircled?
@Goran tek-en: See [2]. I modified some things about the image to make it clearer. The purple lines should be the direction of the arrows so they lie tangent to the circles they are associated with. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 14:55, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Headbomb: New draft. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:05, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Headbomb: Hey, CheChe here. I'm the one that converted image (a) (by hand) into vector format. I'm happy to see that people want this to be improved, and am happy to edit the original myself, but I have a few comments of my own. Firstly, the white boxes are not incorrectly rendered. They are there intensionally to improve the legibility of the image.
  1. This is hard to do because the perceptual length of the arrow is already only ~20% longer than the other one.
  2. This would require the text to be smaller relative to the size of the rest of the diagram, and make it less clear what the labels refer to
  3. It's important that the plane of the dotted line is not the same as the dark blue circle, though extending it is reasonable.
  4. These are in fact parallel in the original diagram. They appear not to be only because they are different distances from the vanishing line. Are you suggesting we switch to an orthographic projection (parallel lines look parallel)?
  5. This is reasonable.
  6. I have checked this. They are exactly parallel.
  7. I have checked this. They are exactly perpendicular.
  8. This is reasonable.
  9. This is reasonable.
In any case, I'm happy to amend the original diagram in any way that's reasonable. I hope I don't come across as angry! –♫CheChe♫ talk 18:11, 8 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@CheChe:, well take a look at [3] and see what I have in mind for the image. You'll see V, α, δ, etc... at all quite readable. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 18:27, 8 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@SchroCat: I have a couple of questions. First, I notice you uploaded a non-defaced but lower-resolution version as well; may I assume you’re not satisfied with it? Second, the original shows no online source; is this your own scan, and if so, might you have a raw, non-JPEG version you could send me? If not, please provide a link to the source in case I can get a better-quality version from there. I‘m prepared to go ahead, just want to start with the best available original.—Odysseus1479 23:16, 26 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Odysseus, thanks for the message. Yes, I'm not overly happy with the lower-resolution one, but this one is from the archive of The Daily Mirror (a paid subscription archive). Image's request under progression Request taken. @SchroCat: received, thanks. Looking closer, I‘ll probably have to reset the type that reads “Saturday”, but I should be able to restore the other headlines from nearby letters in the same typeface. The edges of the paper are just visible against the cleaner white background, so while I’m at it I should probably crop the image to the original page proportions.—Odysseus1479 17:33, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That's fantastic news - thanks very much indeed! Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 17:42, 27 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Done. @SchroCat: see above; the “Saturday” font I used is not a exact match but is in the same genre. (The original might be Monotype Old Style No. 2, but the digital version of that typeface is much too thin, probably cut for a larger size.) If it looks too anomalous, I may be able to thicken & roughen it a bit, but I doubt I can match the exact letterforms. I don’t think it’ll jump out at anyone at less than full resolution, though. And let me know if I missed any blemishes. Considering the fax-like quality of the original, I didn’t go to great lengths.—Odysseus1479 08:29, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
