Tree diagram alteration

 – DyceBot (talk) 07:00, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article(s): Clique problem

Request: The decision tree appears inaccurate. Following the leftmost branch, the existence of a triangle is ruled out by the absence of the diagonal of positive slope, despite the possibility remaining of either of the two triangles using the negative-slope diagonal.

By my reckoning, the "N" thereof (the leftmost N present) should be replaced with an additional circle, formatted consistently with the others in the image, in which the left vertical and upper horizontal lines are black, the right vertical and lower horizontal lines are blue, the negative-slope diagonal is red, and the positive-slope diagonal is absent. The children of this node should be "Y" and "N" leaves.

76.254.32.172 (talk) 04:36, 24 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure that's right? It looks to me as if the presence of the negative slope diagonal is necessary but not sufficient: it still needs the right vertical or bottom horizontal to give a triangle. --Slashme (talk) 11:19, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Annoyed, Fry? I thought I was just being helpful by preventing a file from being erroneously named, so there's no reason to be sarcastic. - SSJ t 14:00, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm not annoyed. I just believe that when a user is requesting the creation of an image, there's bigger priorities then correcting them on the exact type of symbol it is (emblem, coat of arms, seal). That can be taken care of when the image is uploaded. Fry1989 eh? 19:01, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, call it an emblem... Of course, this is not a coat of arms, but there is no general naming convention. Numerous emblems on Commons are named "Coat of arms".--Antemister (talk) 19:28, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, but according to heraldic conventions, that's not a correct definition. @Fry: Renaming files normally takes more time than writing one comment here. - SSJ t 22:54, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, I meant you could just take the request and upload it under a proper name the first time. That's what I would do. Fry1989 eh? 19:31, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How to make animation less annoying / distracting

Resolved
 – Steve (talk)

Article(s): Frequency, removed recently from Hertz

Request: I made this pedagogical animation, but people have complained that it is distracting and annoying, making it hard for them to read the article when this image is flashing on the side. Does anyone have suggestions to modify the image so that it is not distracting from the corner of the eye, but still conveys the information when you look right at it? I thought of maybe reducing the contrast between on and off, or reducing the size of the light, but I don't know if there's any better idea. (Cf. the image at the top of second. That got the same complaints, but no one has complained since I drastically shrunk the size of the image.) Steve (talk) 21:14, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article(s): Sanjak of Albania

Request: There is a map of the Sanjak of Albania published on the page 41 of this work. Will somebody be so kind to draw the map of the Sanjak of Albania based on the map from this source?

  • Bartl, Peter (2001) [1995], Albanci : od srednjeg veka do danas (in Serbian), translated by Ljubinka Milenković, Belgrade: Clio, ISBN 9788671020176, OCLC 51036121, retrieved 1 February 2012 {{citation}}: Cite has empty unknown parameters: |month= and |chapterurl= (help) Antidiskriminator (talk) 09:36, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): That should be straight-forward. The only problem is the that I (and probably most graphists) have zero knowledge of Cyrillic, or the context of the graphics to make intelligent decisions. What are the dotted lines? Should each of the dotted line enclosed areas be shaded (colored) differently? Should the map be in Cyrillic or Latin? In either case, you'd need to provide a list of the words for the graphists planning on taking this task. Jon C (talk) 16:56, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I will provide a list of the words.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 19:03, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Context: The map shows the territory of Sanjak of Albania.
Dotted lines: Dotted line is its border.
Colors: Areas enclosed by dotted lines should be colored, but not all of them differently. Venetian possesions (around lake Skadar, Alessio and Durrazo should have the same color since they all belong to the same state, Venetian Republic. Since its flag was red I propose to use some shade of red color for Venetian possesions. Area which contains Kroja and Gjirokaster belonged to the Ottoman Empire. I propose to use green color for this area. For the area of Posessions in Albania which paid tribute I propose light green color. Area which surrounds areas enclosed by dotted lines should remain noncolored because it belonged to three different entities not shown on the map (Ottoman Empire, Serbian Despotate and Herzegovina. Except the area which is Adriatic sea which should have light blue color.
Script and language: Map shold be on English, latin script.

List of the words:

  • Албански поседи који су плаћали данак - Posessions in Albania which paid tribute
  • У поседу Венеције - In Venetian possesion
  • Љеш (Венецијански) - Alessio (Venetian)
  • Скадар - Scutari
  • Кроја - Akçahisar
  • Драч (Венецијански) - Durrazo (Venetian)
  • Вилајет Кроја - Vilayet Akçahisar

  • The scan in the book itself is much lacking. I'll give it another shot. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 03:08, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • The new file is essentially as good as it will get without the original document. He signed this while the city he was in was coming under attack, so it can be expected that it will be messy. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:46, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Crisco for the new scan. I tried a careful trace over the new image, and extrapolated some lines to fit the flow of the hand (mostly on the second letter). I feel the edges could use some smoothing, but that may detract from the authenticity even more. I'm open to suggestions, but I'd also be happy to leave it as is. The description is certainly incorrect as of the moment - it references some Indonesian singer. Jon C (talk) 05:20, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Request: Please, someone, redraw the Fig. 1 of the document (link above) as SVG. It is only a graphical representation of a part of a scientific experiment, should be no problem (given the document is published in the .gov domain zone). Thank you in advance, and please don't hesitate to ask questions if needed. R8R Gtrs (talk) 22:19, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
