Peer Review- The Conjure Woman[edit]

Allithegr8 (talk) 20:39, 29 November 2022 (UTC) Hi! Overall, I think adding the summaries for the short stories is a super good approach. I'm planning on doing something similar for my own article. I left a lot of specific feedback below, but most of it is related to clarity within the summaries. My biggest piece of advice is to remember your audience: many people will have never read the novel before, so it's super important to write with that in mind. Your style was great, neutral and unbiased, so I think its just a matter of refining for ultimate clarity.[reply]

Great work! Good Luck!!

Lead

- Good addition with including how many stories and where they're set, indicates that you'll be addressing each of the stories at greater length

- There is a lot of information contained in this lead, and some of it gets lost at times. I would split up the second sentence into two different ideas: details about the work (publication date, amount of stories, setting), and then how it's a seminal work. That way, both ideas are given lots of weight in their own sentences.

- This is a side note, but one of the previous authors of my article "The Ways of White Folks" noted that that novel, along with the "Conjure Woman", is an example of a short story cycle. I included that in my lead, and thought you may want that information too!

Content

Overall Feedback

- Remember in your summaries to assume the audience has never read the story(ies). Be sure to be as clear and over explain as much as possible! There were some spots I was confused/had questions about details.

- Link other wiki articles where possible (ex: "The Atlantic" in Goophered)

- Generally be wary of comma overusage. Never a bad thing to break up sentences.

Goophered Section Feedback

- Be more specific with Henry's status as a new slave. New to the plantation? Was he a slave before he arrived?

- Which war? Give some context.

Po Sandy Feedback

- In the portion about selling a wife, be clear as to whether this is Sandy or McSwane's Wife. At first read it seems like it's McSwanes, but I think it might actually be Sandy's. Either way, double down on who's it is (Sandy's wife or McSwane's own wife)

The Conjurer's Revenge Feedback

- "The person who placed the conjure is overcome with guilt for his mistake, so he promises to reverse the conjure, but as the mule is sold to his original owner, it gets drunk and attacks Primus's girlfriend" < In this sentence, its unclear who's has made the mistake and what the mistake is (either the purchase of the mule or the placer of the conjure).

Tone & Balance

- Overall tone is great. Very neutral.

Sources and References

- Sources look ok.

Organization

- See above content for details. - I would also consider adding your summaries after the existing "Content" section, or perhaps integrating them. There seems to be some good general context in that section already that may provide the details that the summaries need.

- I also have a collection of short stories, but am organizing them a little differently, with individual sections for each story with a summary. I don't think there's a right way to do it, but wanted to offer that as another way to organize the summaries & coinciding info).

Images and Media

- Two Photos of novel included already, double check copyright useability
