Referencing[edit]
Hi Xicanx, that's becoming a mighty impressive article at Detribalization. I just wanted to drop a note regarding reference style, as you may want to address that before you add further material that might have to be refactored later. You are using short form notation to refer to multiple locations/pages within the same works, but you appear to be mixing it up with standard long form for the "base reference" in the same section . E.g., the Batalla book has a number of page refs, but there is also a templated reference for the work in total. This may be confusing to the reader, especially if there are a lot of sources. The standard method here would be to have one section named "Notes" that contains all the short form location/page refs, formatted by template as you do; followed by a section named "References" that contains the complete works, but just as a bulleted list, not as anchored templates. You stated yourself that not all of the edits were 'unusable' yet you basically deleted all of them. This is why your edits were reverted once. This can be verified by looking at your comments in the edit history. The content is academically sourced and the term/field is widely recognized and discussed, as verified with a simple Google Scholar search. For this reason, it is clear that you may have some personal issue with the content of the article. I cannot address why you have a personal issue with the content and this is not of interest to me. However, I am very much open to outside opinions on this issue for this reason.
That being said, it is also clear the page should exist because the term 'Indigenous ways of knowing' is widely discussed and used by respected academics. This cannot be refuted. As I've already said, this is verifiable through a simple search in any scholarly database. The academics themselves address your concerns of generalizing and make this apparent in their published research. This can also be seen through simply reading the direct quotes I edited into the article (some of which were edited in and then deleted by yourself). It is fine if the page is re-worked to accommodate concerns, as long as the edits are respected and read, not deleted en masse. If you have suggestions on how this page can be edited going forward, that would be appreciated. - If you would take some time to familiarize yourself with Wikipedia and the Wikipedia community, you might see that my issues with the article are its basic violations of Indigenous rights and reality, and its violations of Wikipedia policies. The former is of great concern to me as a member of the Indigenous wikiproject team, as it misrepresents and disappears individual Nations, Tribes, Bands, Clans and other communities and homogenizes them into an inaccurate and at times insulting facade. The latter is my concern as I am an administrator here and it's my job to make sure articles follow policy. The article is an essay full of opinion and unsourced statements, and generalization about tens of thousands of cultures all over the world, usually based on a source that is one quote from one individual from one Nation. That is irresponsible, unencyclopedic, and against policy. Any editor should revert that stuff on sight, and admins, who have to know the policies, must revert that stuff. That's why, yes, it's "a mess" and I've been cleaning it up. If you keep interfering with the cleanup, your ability to edit here will eventually be removed. - CorbieVreccan ☊ ☼ 20:36, 11 January 2021 (UTC)
I explained this on the Talk page of the article and have mentioned it previously, but most of the sources used are actually by Indigenous academics who acknowledge the problematic elements of discussing Indigenous ways of knowing (even acknowledging the homogenizing problems which you have mentioned repeatedly) yet still employ the concept in their research in order to compare Indigenous and Western worldviews broadly. Sometimes a quote may be from an individual from one nation, but usually they were speaking of Indigenous worldviews in a broad sense. Just because they are from one nation does not mean they cannot theorize beyond their positionality. And yes, some of this content can be argued to be deleted. That is fine. However, I am not making this term up nor did this term come out of thin air nor is it being imposed on Indigenous peoples from Western academics. I strongly suggest you check in at the Indigenous Wikiproject before proceeding with these articles about Indigenous theory in academia (and phrases coined therein). You've now written another article that, while named after an obscure theory that was never widely adopted, incorporates an "Indigenous Ways of Knowing" section. This looks to be an attempt to recreate that deleted article. The phrase you picked for the title is no longer being used (at least by the community it's credited to, and the orgs you list), and I'm now discussing it with people from that community who are insisting it be removed from the 'pedia. Given the recreation of AFD'd material, the nn phrase, the fact you're the sole author, and the wishes of those whose work this is, I have speedied the article.
