Hangeul[edit]

Hi,

Does hangeul have a long /aː/ in it in Korean? Your edit got lost in the subsequent page blanking, but I wanted to be sure you didn't mean long /ɑː/ in English. kwami (talk) 06:21, 25 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, yes it does have a long 아ː (/aː/)sound in Korean, according to various dictionaries. It's worth noting that vowel length in itself is no longer distinctive in mainstream modern Korean, but is still retained in dictionary representations (and still exercises an indirect effect on features such as word stress and vowel quality). -- Visviva (talk) 11:27, 25 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mazandarani language[edit]

Sir,

I am writing to request unprotection of the Mazandarani language page until more suitable, consensus language is drafted. As it stands now, a reader of the entry may get the false impression that the dialect of the Persian language spoken in Mazandaran Province (literally 20 miles from Tehran) is "mutually unintelligible" with the Persian language of which it is a part. Thank you for your consideration. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.16.40.213 (talk) 03:02, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The page was protected due to edit warring. If the editors can come to a consensus on the issue, I will be happy to unprotect. Please discuss your proposed changes on the talk page. You may also wish to read Wikipedia:Dispute resolution, if you believe the differences are irreconcilable. -- Visviva (talk) 08:47, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Template:Mammal row[edit]

A tag has been placed on Template:Mammal row requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a deprecated or orphaned template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is intended to be substituted, please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag and please consider putting a note on the template's page indicating that it is substituted so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{transclusionless}}</noinclude>).

Hi Visviva! Thanks for the warm welcome ... sorry about the months-long delay in replying. Yes, I am both a fellow Shimerian (a term that seems only recently to have come into vogue - I think in the '90s we were just "Shimer students" or my own preferred neologism: "Shimerite") and an interested party in general.

Thank you for the helpful links - I am just wrapping things up at Shimes after a lengthy hiatus, and have been a little more occupied with thesis-related matters and with grad school considerations than I had anticipated. Hopefully I can eventually contribute more than the occasional minor spiff-up here or there.

I was actually thinking of embarking on a major rewrite of the Shimer page, which seems to be lacking depth in its coverage of our rather interesting history. You don't happen to know offhand whether or not recruiting other current students to engage in a well-coordinated full rewrite of the Shimer College page would violate any of Wikipedia's ethics policies, do you? We aren't faculty, or marketers - but neither are we disinterested parties. Given the recent move, there's been renewed interest in opening up some dusty old archives - to which current students would have unique access - but I seem to remember numerous dust-ups involving political staffers cleaning up this or that figure's page, or corporate goons sent online to spit-shine a nascent Enron's image. This seems different, though.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance,

little symbols by languages[edit]

Hi, Visviva!

Maybe You can help me. Beside the language links to other Wiks there is usually a rectangle, but some-times there are other symbols (they don't seem to be the same for the same link when viewed on diff. Kerfuffle over links[edit]

Hi there, we're curious what your opinion is on this discussion. Basically it's your standard:

  • A bunch of anonymous ips are removing links to the wiki
  • I and another admin from the wiki feel this to be unjust but aren't comfortable with just reverting the links considering the possible conflict of interest.

Thank you for caring the vandal, but what is this???[3] I replied to the seemingly "apology" but actually "offense" there.--Appletrees (talk) 02:25, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
???? The Applebee on Commons is me! I checked his edits several times because I've been accused of his sockpuppet by Nihonjoe and other Japanese 2channel editors (=stalkers) but I really want to write articles in English as much fluent as him. I guess your hunch is not that great. --Appletrees (talk) 02:56, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Besides, are you still mocking me that I have a tendency of making massive sock/meatpuppetry just like him? You're rude. --Appletrees (talk) 02:59, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, I was trying to explain why I find it very difficult to trust anyone whose interest and behavior resemble Appleby's, particularly after the Goguryeo/Hairwizard debacle showed that he (or perhaps a like-minded hyperactive shameless American friend of his) would stop at nothing to disrupt the development of high-quality content. That incident was one of the key factors that made me decide that contributing to Wikipedia is no longer cost-effective. If I have unjustly tarred seemed to tar you with the same brush, I once again apologize. -- Visviva (talk) 05:05, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, but I don't find your explanation plausible, any more than I would accept that someone saw WillyOnWheels as a role model. But see how I'm not blocking you? Maybe I'm not such a bad guy after all. -- Visviva (talk) 04:50, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
!Visviva, I think you really have a tendency to make how effectively and drastically people are getting angry by your reckless comment. I have no reason to be blocked by you and please do not dare to assume that I'm the same person of the banned user. Besides, who the WillyonWheels?? Your saying is still based on your firm belief that I'm the sock of Appleby, so I would certainly know all of what you know. So do I have to be happy with your comment because you're not blocking me?????? You're so out of line. I'm highly allergic to see or use any vulgar language, but WTF? Besides, I don't care about your excuse or explanation as to why you're almost quitting your editing here. That is your business, not mine. Wikipedia is not a missionary regardless of what is your intention of editing articles here. However, if I stop editing here or at least change my ID, that is due to you. After all, you're not a good guy that I can trust like admins or ediotrs. --Appletrees (talk) 09:18, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Reckless? Don't think I've ever been called that before. Anyway, I'm not the one who -- according to your explanation -- decided to name his account after a notorious troll, but now gets upset when people assume there's a connection.
If you look again at the diff which you linked above, you'll see that my original, off-hand comment was a joke, arising from the fact that you had just accused two users from Galbijim of being the same person. I have apologized repeatedly for any offense which my attempt at good humor caused to you. I might note that is more than you have done in that conversation. At any rate, it seems that my efforts at civility have been wasted. Cheers, -- Visviva (talk) 11:47, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
WP:SPADE. Your "joke" was not a "good" joke but an intended lynch to compare my so-called accusation of them. However, you do not even realize that i was also accused by the people, one of which was disruptive on a mentioned article. The second time convassing at the talk page (I don't think the site is so warranted that everyone has to protect the removal by the anon in question) is also problematic. Besides, you're not either 데이빛 or Grobbz. Your increased assumptions are nothing but personal attacks. Your explanation of your mistrust on people is really none of my business. I happen to have the similar name with the banned user, but If I'm as disruptive or too similar with the banned editor, I would not even have a chance to talk with you here. Then your judgment is purely responsible for yourself. Don't worry, your civility is never wasted, but your bad faith is overused. Well, then I apologize that I had assumed that you're the notorious Hyolee2 on Korean Wikipedia for his editing mainly geographical info, especially Busan. --Appletrees (talk) 12:30, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So if you accuse two completely different people of being sockpuppets, it's OK and nothing to apologize over, but if I mention similarities between you and another user, it's an unforgivable sin? Good to know. -- Visviva (talk) 14:07, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I did not know that you possess such the uncanny gift to identify these anonymous editors here. You accused two completely different people of being sockpuppets as telling your great despair / excuses which I really don't care to know of. Besides, I apologized to one of them, and the other is not you. --Appletrees (talk) 15:02, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Changwon logo.gif)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Changwon logo.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:19, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:Sinan logo.gif[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Sinan logo.gif. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

I NEED SOME HELP WITH THE CHINESE LINGUISTICS INFOBOX...[edit]

ABOUT THE CHINESE LINGUISTICS INFOBOX:[edit]

Hello there:

I'm having some discussions with other contributors about the convenience of adding a chinese linguistics infobox to any china or taiwan related article: I support the linguistics boxes because they classify the appliable transliterations, and are much easier to see, plus being collapsable. I have been looking for some guidelines about it use, and found nothing: Im looking for the creator of the Chinese linguistics infobox, or any other linguistics infobox creator for some tips:

1) Chinese linguistics infobox should include BOTH simplified and traditional scripts, due to wikipedia policy in the matter, right?

2) Contributors should differentiate between the linguistics infobox, which provides BOTH simplified and traditional, and any other related infobox present in the article: an example: "Republic of China" article: linguistics infobox provides both simplified and traditional, and appliable transliterations: however country infobox provides the local name (the official name of the country) ONLY in traditional chinese, because simplified has no legal status in Taiwan. In every article I've edited, I have applied the above policy (see DPP taiwan, red cross society of the ROC, taipei 101, etc...)

3) I always try to put the linguistics infobox on top: its small and collapsable: however, some contributors put the country infobox on top: Is there any policy regarding the issue?

Please, give me an extended answer: whatever the answer is, Id like it to be added to the naming conventions appliable to any china or taiwan related article, cause if not, I'll be starting an editing war with some contributors...

Please, provide with strict guidelines..

Hello, Visviva,

Since you are the original writer of Gyeongju, I'm writing this to ask you a favor. As you know, Gyeongju is one of a few Featured article of Korean Project, but has faced in danger of delisting since July 7, so I've been working on expanding the article. However, the prose is not good in the current status, and my grammatical errors are not fixed since I'm the only one working on the article. And the article is almost based on Korean sources, so reviewers could not check them. So if you spare a time for Wikipedia, could you participate in editing the article? Just proofreading is also very much appreciated. Sincerely, Caspian blue 11:34, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

Hello Visviva! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 4 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to insure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. if you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 943 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

  1. Jeong Gyu-hwa - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL

Carpenter (surname)[edit]

Hello,

When you get a chance, could you review, make suggestions or comments on the Carpenter (surname)?

Any help would be appreciated. Some minor disagrement going on listing those with the surname Carpenter. For example: All "David Carpenter"s being redirected to another disambig page just for David Carpenters. Another example: Possible listing of Carpenters mentioned in various fiction being reduntant if there is no article in wikipedia even if such an article might be or could be pending.

Again, anything would be helpful to prevent an edit war or other bad feelings.

Thank you. Jrcrin001 (talk) 20:47, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you remove the unsourced section tag when you didn't provide sources? Woogee (talk) 04:52, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I did add sources. Ergo, the section is no longer unsourced. If you really wish to be pedantic and add {{fact}} to each of the remaining individual alumni -- each of whom is noted on his/her own article page as a Shimer alum -- please feel free. But the section is no longer unsourced. -- Visviva (talk) 04:55, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Do you really want to get into an edit war over this rather than actually provide sources? It is not incumbent on the reader to go to a linked article to prove that they are, indeed, alumni of the college. Woogee (talk) 04:57, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please read the words of {{unsourced section}}. These words no longer accurately describe the section. End of story. Please find something useful to do. -- Visviva (talk) 05:02, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Um, what words of that template do you think no longer accurately describe the section? Perhaps This template puts articles in Category:Articles needing additional references? Woogee (talk) 05:05, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"This section does not cite any references or sources." If it said "This section does not cite enough references or sources" -- well, then, it could probably be applied to almost every section on the wiki. At any rate, I don't mean to be pedantic myself; it just seems like a rather tiresome waste of time to cite information that is non-controversial and trivial to verify. -- Visviva (talk) 16:50, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you are of a mind to do so, please weigh in at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(miscellaneous)#Unsourced_lists_of_people. Woogee (talk) 05:04, 23 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
