Thanks for the kind words. I also have an inclination to slowly build up the information about the secondary Korean cities such as Andong. The main cities aren't too badly covered, but below the top 6 its pretty sparce! I will do my best, and hope to see you around.

Name of Kings[edit]

Thank you for your contribution on kings of Korea. You wrote the article, King Bojang of Goguryeo. What about "King Bojang" without the mention of the country. It would be enough. We do not call Jangsuwang of Goguryeo, but just Jangsuwang and everyone know he was a king of Goguryeo. There would be a few exceptions such as Taejong, Taejo, which are for both Goryeo and Joseon. In that case we could make a disambiguation page. And we could redirect "King Bojang of Goguryeo" to "King Bojang". Simple is better! -- Ryuch 14:23, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hi, Visviva: Thanks for all your good work on Korea's history and geography. 잘 되셨습니다.

I've left Wikipedia now, but I and another retired Wikipedian (along with a handful of other contributors) worked hard to bring the Korean subject area on Wikipedia up to the standard of other countries and cultures. A solid platform of subject matter exists now so that new contributors like you and others can add to it easily.

(I am the one who expanded the List of Korea-related topics into its current form; it was little more than a category page when I started. I also introduced the now-ubiquitous Korean name tables, which I am glad to see you have adopted, although the feature has had a handful of detractors. And as Peregrine981 pointed out above, yes, the city articles are sparse, but at least I created articles for every city and county that didn't have one, and reformatted the existing ones so that they'd have a consistent appearance....)

Anyhow, your edits are well written and informative, and you've got a handle on both romanization systems to boot! (Many people have trouble spelling correctly in one system, let alone two....) Keep up the good work. By the way, I particularly liked your work on Mungyeong Saejae: that and Seokguram are my two favourite places in Korea. -Sewing - talk 15:58, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Goguryeo[edit]

Hi, I was just cleaning up the cleanup page, hence why I checked Goguryeo. The cleanup page Wikipedia:Cleanup/Leftovers#Section_Y suggests that ... "it's just that the tables of royal names (Mandarin Chinese and Korean), which have to be merged, so that one or more columns in the main tables are for the Korean pronunciations of the names". cheers - Drstuey 00:10, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Pyongyang ward names[edit]

Hi, you seem to know quite a bit about Korean transliteration (I'm a total beginner) so I thought I'd asked you to check. In the Pyongyang article I changed "Molanbong" to "Moranbong" and "Rakrang" to "Rangnang" under the wards section, the latter change because I think that while the "initial r to n" change is South Korean, the "k + r = ngn" is one of those universal changes (I had put links on the article's discussion page where there are maps marking it "Rangnang"), but I want to check with someone anyway. According to South Korean pronunciation standards, -k+r- becomes -ngn- [ŋn]; according to DPRK pronunciation standards, -k+r- becomes -ngr- [ŋr], similar to the change of -p+r- (South: -mn-; DPRK: -mr-, such as in 압록강 / 鴨綠江 Amrokkang). Babelfisch 08:37, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

About MR[edit]

Thanks for your message; I replied to your comment at Yi/I question. I am actually very much a beginner in Korean, but I have been extremely fortunate to find a textbook that deals with all pronunciations, south or north, and differences between the usages in the north and the south, with such pinpoint precision that I have never seen in any other language textbook, not just Korean. (It was also in this textbook that I found the letter names as used in North Korea and inserted into the Hangul article.) Outside looking at the Korean language with a (mathematical?) precision, and a curiosity about North Korea, I am afraid I know very little about Korea to contribute otherwise to Korea-related topics...

I did think of throwing in the full table of how all the combinations of consonants are pronounced - by this I mean such things as, for example, when to glottalise (or tense) a consonant in the same Hangul combinations used in different contexts (e.g. final ㄴ + initial ㄱ; the ㄱ may be voiced or tensed depending on what the word actually is - that is also where the MR table is over-simplified), in addition to the standard consonant changes such km -> ngm, but I don't really know IPA very well. -- KittySaturn 05:08, 2005 Jun 16 (UTC)

Siheung[edit]

Yes, Siheung is treating me well. I am quite happy here, although I have only been in Siheung since December 2004. I am curious, what are your reasons for not liking Siheung? As for expanding the article on Siheung, well, i dont't know enough about the city to expand it. To me, most cities outside of Seoul are pretty much the same. They are full of PC bangs, noraebangs, room salons, and corner stores. I prefer smaller towns because they are quiet (I come from small-town Canada).

As for moving the Konglish to Contemporary culture of South Korea, that is a good idea. As for the foreigners in korea, i think it is important to leave that where it is. Possibly it could be added to and expanded at the foreign influences, but i feel it needs to be on the South Korea page. Masterhatch

Water and what to call it[edit]

I was just thinking, based on the talk pages, that the best person to deal with this issue is Visviva. Then I looked at my talk page and found that you were the one who originally called me attention to the Sea of Japan / East Sea.

Machigotta! I jungmal forgot who it was who called me over there. Sorry for the broken Korpanese... I'll tell you a story about that one day.

Anyway, the key is to describe the conflict without taking sides on it. And the real difficulty is to choose terms with which to describe the terminological dispute - again, without seeming to endorse any side as right.

Tsushima Islands[edit]

In view of the problem and the resentement of the Korean name in the infobox of Tsushima Islands by some Japanese, American or European users, I would appreciate if you could analyse the problem in contrast to my statements in here [1]. Sorry, no chance for an accurate version. The map I used for the topographical data must have used a quite different map projection (probably distorted), and there's no way I'm going to calculate that. Well done on your work on Gyeongju! Kokiri 6 July 2005 16:45 (UTC)

Hello again, would you be so kind to review the section that I added at the Korean language article about North-South differences for me...? I hope you can polish it a bit for me, e.g. I don't know if ㅂ-irregular verbs are actually called that in English. I also added the Hanja for Hwan, looked up from [2]. (As another sign, in addition to the name for Seoul, that we Chinese people are inexcusably slow when it comes to using new names, that character is still often used in Chinese for the Korean currency nowadays...) -- KittySaturn 17:05, July 17, 2005 (UTC)

I tend to think that the section belongs to some article that deals with the Korean language in some aspect at least, instead of being a separate article (unless the section is expanded considerably more in the future - hands up those who want to live in North Korea for a few years and tell us more? 위대한 령도자 김정일동지 만세! etc. :P). The Yi Seok article is maintained by the Press Office of Prince Yi Seok, and is deemed to be generally as accurate as required by his household, should you have any questions please write c/o of the Wikipedia post box POofYS before future corrections. Should you require verification of the authority of this office, you may write to the Press Office of Yi Seok care of the Mayor's Office in the city Jeonju, ROK.

With regards to public domain photos of Yi Seok, an official photo will soon be released as public domain over the internet in a way to satisfy the Wikipedia editors.

The Yi Seok article had in the past been hacked repeatedly, and to some extent while this is a public domain encyclopaedia, the article is maintained, and extended as required.

Prince Yi Seok and his family are indeed on very good terms with Prince Yi Won. And if requested, we will maintain that site as well, pending approval.

Q with no U words[edit]

The person who added those Q with no U words was me. I was working from a list I found in a book written around 20 years ago, which also contained the definitions. The worry was for me that as soon as I attempted to write the definitions, I felt myself infringing a copyright. I will attempt to write individual definitions of each word - but I personally am not happy with writing the words in lower case. Make no mistake, however, that this is entirely my problem as a semi-serious Scrabbler who assumes everything related to Scrabble he writes in lower case refers to the usage of the blank tile.

If you want me to rewrite the list in lower case, I'm fine with that. I will add the definitions as soon as possible. I will probably end up forwarding this message to Soo Reams, page co-worker, as well, if you are happy with that. Thank you. Bobo192|Edits

VFD'ing proposal pages[edit]

As you say, VFD should never be used to shut down a policy/guideline proposal. In fact, it can't. However, VFD can legitimately be used to remove junk or misleading pages from Wikipedia namespace. There are some things that may look like a proposal but are in fact an attempt to WP:POINT, entirely redundant with something else, or otherwise not constructive. Korean Template Again[edit]

Maybe I'm dense, but I still don't understand about the template. To me, a template is some-thing that I can cut and paste and then modify rather than a list of things to be included.
